davchana··on Removing the modem and GPS from my 2024 RAV4 hybrid
No, eating food & then paying is a debt. After the services have been rendered. If seller can pull back the items, never provided the service, no debt.
davchana··on The TSA's New $45 Fee to Fly Without ID Is Illegal
to add, fee for Real ID marker on Limited Term license covers 5 years, so if one gets lets say a license for 2 years (& had to pay for 5 years), the next renewals/updates within those 5 years are free.
davchana··on Email experiments: filtering out external images
Long time ago somebody told that gmail pre fetches all images, so tracker pixels report exactly one open occurrence for images in gmail email.
davchana··on Launch HN: AgentMail (YC S25) – An API that gives agents their own email inboxes
The only problem I have experienced few times with those unique email addresses is, sometimes they/utilities ask me to email from my official email address, and my setup is a catch-all, so I have to log in my pc at home, set up that address, send email.
davchana··on Total monthly number of StackOverflow questions over time
I too, around 2012 was too much active on so, in fact, it had that counter thing continuously xyz days most of my one liners, or snippets for php are still the highest voted answers. Even now when sometimes I google something, and an answer comes up, I realize its me who asked the same question and answered it too.

davchana··on Rubio stages font coup: Times New Roman ousts Calibri

davchana··on 60k kids have avoided peanut allergies due to 2015 advice, study finds
Exactly. In north India, in winters everybody eats peanuts brittle, sesame seed roasted jaggery balls. Kids, elders, youngs. Very rare to hear peanut or nuts allergies.
davchana··on Indian Sign Painting: A typeface designer's take on the craft
Related, there are many painters, who work as employees at truck repair or denting painting shops, and write generic words like TANK on Diesel Tank, or like OK BYE TATA on rear bumper, or simply names, with dome petals around them. They start with a yellow rectangle, and then paint black lines as negative space, eventually bringing out yellow letters out.
davchana··on Playing with more user-friendly methods for multi-factor authentication
And in India when you need lots of cash from your own account, you need to sign a withdrawal slip, and signatures on that need to match exactly the original signatures on their file.
davchana··on Checklists are hard, but still a good thing
I often use a checklist version for travel packing, where every item simply goes after each other with a checkbox, instead of usual checklist with every new item going on new line.
davchana··on Solving `Passport Application` with Haskell
No, I can't ever. I was an immigrant worker there, and Qatar Immigration wanted all this before they give me work visa aka residence permit.
davchana··on Solving `Passport Application` with Haskell
Don't know in this case, but some other countries ask for it to deduce your travel history (any current passport itself goes to them, with color copies of every page of old passports). Qatar wanted it because I shared name with somebody born 40 years before me.
davchana··on SFStreets: History of San Francisco place names
I did not see my Powell St, parallel to Mason & Stockton St.
davchana··on Japan Post launches 'digital address' system
Since years I have yearned that USPS lets you rent a PO Box. Maybe divide the country in 5 to 10 parts, and allocate a special zip code for these. The po box is nothing but just a forwarding address. You as a user control its final destination in usps.com account. It is like a link shortener.

Somebody sends a letter to that address. Regular mail system forwards it to machines. There, machines stick a yellow or some color strip on it with its actual destination, then it comes to you. You could move and simply update usps.com address.

davchana··on California vanity license plate applications with reasons for rejection
The latest version of this request form in DMV CA doesn't even ask for meaning of the plate/phrase now.
davchana··on Email Forwarding for Your Domain
No, he made namecheap forward incoming emails to domain to his email.
davchana··on Why hasn't commercial air travel gotten any faster since the 1960s? (2009)
In flight from Dubai to JFK, I had two 500ml used empty plastic bottles (not reusable, just basic transparent). Security made me throw 1, saying one 1 empty bottle allowed.
davchana··on Why hasn't commercial air travel gotten any faster since the 1960s? (2009)
Thanks a lot for this search engine. I always wanted to be able to search this way, direct flights from xyz airport.
davchana··on A phishing attack involving g.co, Google's URL shortener
My friend was not smart as you, and religiously typed password on a fake Amazon website link clicked from an SMS promising a refund on recent purchase. Stopped only when it asked for 2FA code because there was no 2FA setup.
davchana··on A QR code that sends you to a different destination – lenticular and adversarial
Yes, I usually share it with Google App, and Lens tab.
davchana··on Mastercard DNS error went unnoticed for years
> CNAME pointing to a Heroku/Shopify/GitHub

At least Gitlab (similar to Github pages, I never used Github Pages, always Gitlab Pages) gives you a verification TXT record in your Gitlab Account, which needs to stay in DNS as TXT. So if I used to host hi.example.com on Gitlab (& my own TXT record was hosted, and publicly visible), now I don't own example com, or gitlab account got deleted (but still left DNS CNAME records intact) and scammer gets the domain, when he grabs domain and adds hi.example.com to his Gitlab Account to scam people, his Gitlab Account will have his own TXT record. (now) His hi.example.com can never point to "my" gitlab project or page.

davchana··on Show HN: Free mortgage analysis tool to avoid getting screwed by closing costs
Is it too paranoid that even for first time Zelle (with people I know in real life) I send a $ and ask them to see if they received it, before sending anything else?
davchana··on Client-side QR code generator with SVG output
Pretty great example, but I was bummed to see that Error Level is missing. I like to create easy codes with low error correction.
davchana··on Seeing America by train
French Guards board train at Italian border & check everybody immigration (either a EU card or visa and passport), at least in 2016. They take passports with them, saying something in French, and bring it back after about an hour. Longest hour of my life.
davchana··on Hot Page – a graphical site builder
Similar story of me in 2002. Although I didn't come across geocities, and directly found freeservers.com & made a site davinder.8m.net , which is still up. I lost its password from 2007 to 2022, and recovered it back when I recovered my yahoo email account.
davchana··on Did you lose your AirPods?
