daurnimator··on A Kernel Engineer at Microsoft's Answer to “What Do You Think about ReactOS?”
The basics are available in the windows driver development kit.

Many internal symbol and function names are available with debug symbols that have been released by Microsoft over the years.

Lots of undocumented internals you can learn about from this book: https://amzn.to/2XHhSFF

If the book doesn't match what you see (which isn't that often), then you just single-step and see what's happening.

daurnimator··on EINTR and PC Loser-Ing: The “Worse Is Better” Case Study (2011)
> EINTR is a promise that no progress was made.

If only.... on many operating systems, you shouldn't retry close on EINTR, e.g. From [linux man page](http://man7.org/linux/man-pages/man2/close.2.html):

> In particular close() should not be retried after an EINTR since this may cause a reused descriptor from another thread to be closed.

Worse, it's different per operating system!

- HP-UX you must try again

- Linux, Solaris and AIX you don't want to try again

- OSX is ill-defined and hence unsafe, you should use `close$nocancel` instead of `close` and _not_ try again.

daurnimator··on A horrifying globalThis polyfill in JavaScript
Thanks for the new method!

In fengari we currently use https://github.com/fengari-lua/fengari-interop/blob/8e59efb7...

    const global_env = (function() {
        /* global WorkerGlobalScope */ /* see https://github.com/sindresorhus/globals/issues/127 */
        if (typeof process !== "undefined") {
            /* node */
            return global;
        } else if (typeof window !== "undefined") {
            /* browser window */
            return window;
        } else if (typeof WorkerGlobalScope !== 'undefined' && self instanceof WorkerGlobalScope) {
            /* web worker */
            return self;
        } else {
            /* unknown global env */
            return (0, eval)('this'); /* use non-strict mode to get global env */
        }
    })();
I created https://github.com/fengari-lua/fengari-interop/issues/45 to track.
daurnimator··on You can’t judge housing affordability without knowing transportation costs
> A big chunk of the vehicle's depreciation is a result of years rather than miles

Ehhhh, I'd say that it's not that skewed towards age of the vechile beyond common correlations:

  - usually more years = more miles
  - cars < 5 years are usually in warranty and fetch a premium
> insurance doesn't generally track how many miles you drive and charge extra if you drive more

Mine does: in 5000km increments. (Australia)

Note that is only for international travel.

In Australia, you don't need an ID for a domestic flight; and non-flyers are permitted to walk to the gate, no boarding pass is required to go through security.

daurnimator··on Trains are more efficient and less polluting than other transportation modes
Why assume 4 hours with a recharge? I'm thinking closer to max 15 mins without a recharge. This would allow skipping electrification in some tunnels; in rail yards; on track segments shared with non-electrified trains; and anywhere that it's too hard to run electric lines.

The US stopped doing it around 2014. They also stopped doing it in JFK before they stopped doing it in LAX; so when I flew in one side of the country and out the other I had to argue with the clerk....

daurnimator··on Why We Love QUIC and HTTP/3
It's a bad example of middle-boxes causing ossification, as the adoption has been more limited by library/framework support than middle-boxes blocking it.
daurnimator··on Why We Love QUIC and HTTP/3
I think TCP fast open is a bad example for this. None of the common socket libraries that I know (never mind http libraries) have gained support for TCP fast open yet.

TIL that that is not what neosporin is. Since hearing about that liquid bandage thing back in the 00s, I started hearing about people in the US putting "neosporin" on minor injuries; I had just assumed it was the liquid bandage stuff. I only just googled what neosporin was now.... it's a topical antibiotic.
daurnimator··on A380 cancellations by Qantas raise new questions about the superjumbo's future
> Dense seating in economy, is the sole reason

On the Qantas 787 (which I fly regularly MEL<>SFO) the seats in economy are IMO better than the A380 (which I used to fly MEL<>LAX)

787 economy has 32 inch pitch; 17.2inch width: https://www.seatguru.com/airlines/Qantas_Airways/Qantas_Airw...

A380 economy has 31 inch pitch; 17.5inch width: https://www.seatguru.com/airlines/Qantas_Airways/Qantas_Airw...
