datenhorst··on Reddit valued at $6B on a $250M round
The best Reddit user experience by far is via third party apps like Reddit is Fun. I am expecting them to turn of API access for those apps any day now.
datenhorst··on Localize your cat at home with BLE beacon, ESP32s, and Machine Learning
I've had the same problem, what helped was starting to feed the cat semi-regularly. Cats quite literally don't shit where they eat!
datenhorst··on Tech companies are profiling us from before birth
IIRC the ECJ ruling is not de-indexing - the requirement is to remove the link from certain search results, ie. when you google for "flowerlad" but not when you google for "greggman hacker news conservation".
datenhorst··on The password guess worth $240m in Bitcoin
Never put all your eggs into one basket. I only own a negligible amount of coins but have them distributed among 4 storage methods, one of them a printout in a book

datenhorst··on Ask HN: Who's looking for a co-founder?
What exactly does playful mean in this context?
datenhorst··on Ask HN: Best Talks of 2020?
BBC's "Storyville: Brexit Behind Closed Doors" is exactly that, a surprisingly revealing documentary on the negotiations from Guy Verhofstadt's point-of-view. Highly recommended!

Source? I'd prefer a reputable one, if you please
datenhorst··on LinkedIn’s Alternate Universe
How do you do that? I can only give endorsements from a pre-populated list, sadly

> Reed employs a group of highly skilled operators from South Africa

This is mentioned as an afterthought but struck me as strange . Migrant workers commuting from South Africa? The article even mentions their wage at $30/h.

Do you have more information about the ingredient from Austria?
datenhorst··on Ask HN: How do you regain motivation after achieving financial success?
Why would you want to find the motivation to "develop a career" if you neither have to nor have the motivation for it? You are free to do what fulfills you, makes you happy.

Personally, I'm a Basketball coach for 8-12 yo kids twice a week. I wish I could devote more resources towards it, since it truly is the most rewarding experience I have on a day-to-day basis, but a man's gotta pay the bills.

datenhorst··on Samsung TV owners complain about increasingly obtrusive ads
Or avoid Smart TVs altogether if you're a cord cutter anyway, and opt for what I believe is called a "public display".
datenhorst··on Coding for Kids Is Not Just Another Fad
I'd argue that these salaries allow people to retire early and go into careers that are more rewarding than tech, teaching being one of them
datenhorst··on Ad Fraud on LinkedIn
> it is remarkably easy for users to accidentally click on an ad in their news feed.

This is especially true in a mobile browser. The website is incredibly slow and borderline unusable on a mobile phone.

datenhorst··on “Industrial Society and its Future”: the writings of the Unabomber
Something tells me, you didn't actually read it.
datenhorst··on “Industrial Society and its Future”: the writings of the Unabomber
By "book", I assume you mean the 38-page manifesto or is there additional literature?

I also read the manifesto after watching manhunt and its concepts deeply resonated with me. And to think how much deeper technology is ingrained into our society today compared to when he wrote it.

datenhorst··on Georgia Tech professors revolt over reopening, say current plan threatens lives
> Many universities were already starting to struggle to meet growth expectations

This sentence pretty much summarizes the sad state of the US tertiary education system.

datenhorst··on No More Coffee
I always thought I was one of those people on whom caffeine had little to no effect, since we I was drinking 5 cups a day on average and still felt tired all the time.

During the lock-down I read somewhere that caffeine's half-life in your body is 6 hours. I'd always needed an hour at least to fall asleep at night but I never attributed it to caffeine. So I figured I'd quit coffee for a to see what the effects were.

I can't even begin to tell how big of an effect quitting caffeine had: I routinely fall asleep within 15 minutes of going to bed, I sleep better and longer, I have more energy and one espresso after lunch is enough to stay focused and alert until midnight.

datenhorst··on No More Coffee
> I wish I could experience that even for a little bit.

You can, you just have to reset your tolerance for it.

datenhorst··on Not true
I get the feeling that the owner didn't quite understand the request and promptly freaked out.
datenhorst··on A Google bot scrapes pricing info by adding items to carts
My girlfriend uses this as a pretty effective tactic to get discounts - you just have to wait a couple of days and they'll send you an email with a lower price to keep down abandonment rates
datenhorst··on YouTube TV sharply increases monthly subscription to $64.99
Amazon is already moving into that space, they offer some Premier League matches in many countries. There's also a dedicated sports streaming service called DAZN in some European countries
datenhorst··on 536 was ‘the worst year to be alive’ (2018)
It's interesting to imagine that the ramifications of this were still felt in the 620s when Mohamed united the Arab tribes and he and his successors pretty much overran the Byzantine and Persian empires.
datenhorst··on 536 was ‘the worst year to be alive’ (2018)
I listened to this years ago but could still remember Procopius' quote. I just looked it up and apparently the consensus at the time of recording (2013) was a meteor strike rather than a volcanic eruption. Interesting.
datenhorst··on Facebook/CMU Covid-19 U.S. county-by-county symptom map
I was going to write a paragraph about insights I could glean from the map, only to discover while writing that white == no data.
datenhorst··on As YouTube traffic soars, YouTubers say pay is plummeting
I think you overestimate how big the flat earth movement actually is. There's no way anyone of them actually makes any significant money off youtube ad revenue when even the most well-known flat earth videos ("flat earth clues" by Mark Sargent) only have a few 100k views each.

The flat earth debunking channels, on the other hand ...
