datashow··on UC Santa Cruz fires 54 grad students who were striking for higher pay
So the correct title should be: California university fired 54 grad students who withheld students' final grades

Is firing sufficient for punishment?

datashow··on UC Santa Cruz fires 54 grad students who were striking for higher pay
There must be some misunderstanding. The provost doesn't take the overhead, the university does, which is a common practice.
datashow··on Sarah Connor, in hiding before the war
I said "behavior or mental problems". This is very different.
datashow··on Sarah Connor, in hiding before the war
How does different homelessness rates between countries suggest homelessness can be solved by throwing money?
datashow··on Sarah Connor, in hiding before the war
Wow. Got lots of downvotes on the above comment. Not complaining, but curious what is going on here.
datashow··on Sarah Connor, in hiding before the war
No. Homeless is not an easy problem to solve which simply requires political will. A) It is not a small amount of money to provide shelters to homeless people. B) Money doesn't solve the homeless problem. Most homeless people have behavior or mental problems. C) Free money giving to healthy homeless people creates bad incentives.
datashow··on Coronavirus and the blindness of authoritarianism
> I'm curious how this would've progressed if the virus had originated in the US instead and how much better it would've been handled.

The federal and local governments in the U.S. do not have the same power as CCP to suppress the "rumor". The eight doctors would not have been reprimanded by the local police for discussing the new virus in private online groups. The Trump administration would not have power to tell the CDC to shut up. The Trump administration would not have power to force the CDC to under-report counts. The states would not cooperate with the federal government to under-report counts.

> P30 Pro won't have Google's crappy spyware installed

Yes, but it has its own crappy spyware installed.

datashow··on Quarter of all tweets about climate change produced by bots
> one side features scientists ...... they don't have paid PR professionals or troll farms.

Who are "they"? If they means scientists, I can totally believe they don't have paid PR professionals or troll farms. If they means the "side", do they really have no paid PR professionals or troll farms? I doubt it. The article itself reported 5% bots on this "side".

My workplace hosts its own Windows update server, so they have total control of Windows updates.
datashow··on We can’t leave it to billionaires to solve the world’s problems
Another funny thing is, "we" usually attack both millionaires and billionaires. Now, millionaires are forgiven. It seems many of "we" become millionaires.
datashow··on Later school start times are associated with more sleep and better performance
> Primarily due to primary school start times, bussing schedules, and athletics.

Not only that. Starting late also creates a problem for parents.

Parents need to go to work. If kids take bus, kids usually need to board on the school bus before parents leave home. If parents drive kids to school, then the late school start time will become totally unacceptable for many parents because of the conflict with their work start time.

datashow··on Assange offered pardon if he co-operated over email leak, UK court hears
Can we really trust CIA and the "multiple U.S intelligence agencies" on this issue? I have no idea.
datashow··on Ray Tracing Essentials, Part 1: Basics of Ray Tracing
Thanks. I think I got most of what you described.

If I understand it correctly:

1) a point / pixel in the scene (as viewed by the eye) sends out a cone of rays, and the final color of this pixel is a combination of what those rays hit. This is the ray casting process, the reverse of light traveling.

2) the overall picture of the scene is the combination of pixels each calculated by the above ray casting process.

Am I right?

datashow··on Ray Tracing Essentials, Part 1: Basics of Ray Tracing
Interesting video. I didn't get how the Ray casting process formulates the final picture in the eye.
datashow··on China's role in the U.S. fentanyl epidemic
Not really that simple, medicine supply can change doctors' behavior. And massive amount of fentanyl are illegally smuggled into the US. You can't simply pick a middle point in the chain of events and claim that point is the cause.
datashow··on Li Wenliang
I don't think it is a technical thing.

Remember niubo, which ran from 2006 to 2013? https://baike.baidu.com/item/%E7%89%9B%E5%8D%9A%E7%BD%91 It is just a website, there is no technical difficulty to shut it down.

datashow··on Li Wenliang
I did't expect you would name "global leader" in each of those items, that would be a lot. Maybe ping pong as another one?
datashow··on Li Wenliang
There were other popular social media platforms in the past, such as Sina Weibo and other online discussion boards, which were not heavily monitored as WeChat is.
datashow··on Li Wenliang
Also remember lots of things changed under Xi. China never allows political dissidence, but it is under Xi where everything in WeChat is heavily monitored and people get arrested for all sorts of minor things. So Xi is personally responsible for the Wuhan coronavirus outbreak.
datashow··on Li Wenliang
Can you list the things China is a global leader in?
datashow··on Why I’m Leaving San Francisco: Meta study
This is an interesting analysis. It's kind of social science research. I wish the author had some training in the area.

A simple way to improve the trustworthy of the analysis is having another person working with you to develop the categories, and then independently code the posts, and then resolve the differences through discussion.

datashow··on Chinese military personnel charged for hacking into Equifax
Sorry. I meant intentionally.
datashow··on Chinese military personnel charged for hacking into Equifax
If you collect massive sensitive information by scraping endpoint/1 ... 999999999, and you resident in the U.S. You will be in big trouble.
datashow··on Facebook and Twitter reject request by Pelosi to remove doctored video by Trump
"The roughly 5-minute clip shows Ms. Pelosi repeatedly ripping his speech in between snippets of him paying tribute to the airman, Charles McGee, as well as other guests he had invited to the State of the Union, including military families. In fact, Ms. Pelosi ripped a copy of Mr. Trump’s speech immediately after his address to Congress on Tuesday."

I never thought the clip indicating the timing of the ripping. This is a very weird interpretation.

datashow··on Coronavirus Death Toll Rises to 805, Passing SARS
The death count outside of China is only 1. The 0.3 percent outside of China is not a robust number.
datashow··on Coronavirus Death Toll Rises to 805, Passing SARS
OK. I just used the Deaths / ( deaths + recoveries ) formula:

Hubei province: 780/2219 = 35.1%

Other provinces combined: 32/1256 = 2.5%

So Hubei has 14 times of death rate as other provinces combined.

datashow··on Coronavirus Death Toll Rises to 805, Passing SARS
I agree that Hubei province is the epicenter so we would expect higher death rate. But don't know whether 9 times high is reasonable.

Also, the same reasoning would conclude that China's death count in SARS in definitely fake.

datashow··on Coronavirus Death Toll Rises to 805, Passing SARS
Great work. But I don't see "deaths / recoveries" or "deaths / (deaths + recoveries)" on your webpage.
