datapimp··on Ask HN: If ideas are worthless, why are some startups in stealth mode?
pretty sure this is sarcasm. good job.
datapimp··on Refresh Firefox on Vim save
I've found that saving code, and refreshing the browser, then going back to code, then going back to the browser, is a terribly inefficient practice and horrible for flow. If you're finding yourself having to do this so often as to require a vim hack, you're doing something wrong.

Something like autotest for ruby projects, and cucumber / selenium etc should be making sure your code does what it is supposed to.

datapimp··on Ask HN: How do I turn 100K into 1 million?
This is a true statement, but don't enter the world series unless you are already a top notch player. Just play in the 150$ nightly tournaments on pokerstars and you could expect a 120-150% ROI as a solid player.
datapimp··on How Applying Principles from Psychology Can Improve Dating Success
That's a common criticism, but it is mostly false and dependent on the person who is using the science to be more successful in getting what they want.

What mystery is talking about is simple attraction psychology, and it is all based on evolutionary psychology. Incidentally, so are all "serious adult relationships". Mystery says that women are attracted to men who display three things: 1) they're leaders of men 2) they are desirable by other women 3) they take care of their people. As anyone who has been in a "serious adult relationship" can tell you, these things are just as important for maintaining attraction in a long term relationship as they are in a one night stand.

The things mystery and more serious evolutionary psychologists have elaborated on are valid in all cases where men desire to maintain the attraction of a woman. It isn't entirely selfish or manipulative either. Women want to be attracted to you.

OP is learning from Cialdini. But he should really be learning from Mystery, and other pick up artists who have been field testing principles from Evolutionary Psychology for over a decade.

datapimp··on Do programmers need a union?
You have unions to thank for this thing called 'The Weekend'. Pure evil right there. Let's not get out of hand.
datapimp··on Ask HN: Looking for hacker/entrepreneur roommate in Austin, TX
I've stayed in Steven's apartment before while working on Anticlothes. Great building and location in Austin. And he's a stand up guy and super talented designer.
datapimp··on Wage Slavery - Applicable to [Nearly] Everybody?
Not everyone can start a business though. A business has to have employees.
datapimp··on Wage Slavery - Applicable to [Nearly] Everybody?
I think the important point isn't to compare our situations currently to 'Wage Slavery' but to acknowledge the history.

As a people, we have descended from serfs, slaves, and wage slaves. Wage slavery was a competing strategy for emerging industrialists, and a much more efficient one since they did not have to feed and house their wage slaves the way Chattel slave owners had to. ( Indeed, this was the argument the Southern slave owners used in favor of Slavery in the south. At least they took care of their property. The northern industrialists did not.)

So, we have descended from wage slaves. And the only reason we are much better off is because of the sacrifices made by other wage slaves who organized to fight for better working conditions.

Things like, you know.. the weekend, the 8 hour day, holidays.
