datakan··on My friends all hate AI; I just joined an AI startup
3 entire departments of people at my work are being walked out of the building this week for AI. Not replaced by AI, cost cutting to later possibly afford AI so they can put everyone else out of work too.
datakan··on Memory prices climb 500% in 12 months
Been long past that time, probably 15-20 years past. It's not even the languages its the 500 different layers of abstraction and abominations like Electron.
datakan··on Memory prices climb 500% in 12 months
I'm saving a ton of money by simply not upgrading. I used to do upgrades every 1-2 years just to keep up on things, pass the old box down to my son or otherwise donate it. Now I intend to keep my current setup for 7+ years. Its 2 years old next month. I may even stay with it longer. I just see no reason to upgrade with things how they are.

I considered a Mac Studio a couple months ago. Price was up but might have pulled the trigger if not for the delivery date that was almost 4 months out. Sale lost. I suspect a lot of people are like me right now and we'll start seeing significant drops in consumer spending on electronics the next 2-4 years minimum.

datakan··on Auto-research with codex: How I achieved a 232x Faster Kernel
I don't know. That just sounds like throwing money at a problem until it goes away. I'm not convinced that is the correct path forward.
datakan··on Debian has begun voting on the future of AI/LLM contributions
Tried to decipher this but seems a bit convoluted. If the Kernel now allows LLM code, then what will Debian do if they ban LLM code? Choice 7 and choice 8 seem pretty clear that the project simply can't continue under those circumstances.
datakan··on Maximizing the value of your Claude Code sessions
The AI is so super intelligent that it can't optimize itself and instead burns through tokens needlessly. The people programming the AI are so good that they can write long winded articles about how to optimize their AI but can't get the AI to do these things by default.

It's all so tiring. I care less and less about Claude every single day because of the usage caps and the constant optimizing that has to be done. The whole point of AI was to get past this type of bullshit. They've failed miserably at their jobs.

datakan··on Anthropic: Introducing The Conceptual Reasoning Index
> Maybe it gets bonus points for constantly being honest about how it didn't actually finish what you asked it to do.

But it wont refund your tokens when it fails to do it so it loses extra points.

datakan··on I requested a copy of my data from McDonald’s loyalty program
Do you think the people getting caught are going to trial or just taking plea deals?
datakan··on AI agents lie, cheat and steal. That is putting off users
The best comments are the ones formed as questions. I'm as guilty as anyone, but it is far more productive in comment sections to ask questions rather than saber rattle or peacock in front of people. Just my opinion of course.
datakan··on Claude users are mad that Anthropic's new watermarks will catch them using it
This is aimed at academia with all the cheating kids and youngsters. I really dont have a big problem with it but I doubt it will be successful.
datakan··on Claude users are mad that Anthropic's new watermarks will catch them using it
Did you write this with AI? jk
datakan··on Delphi 13 Community Edition Is Now Available
So much has changed. I remember driving past the Borland HQ in Scotts Valley every day on my way to work. Delphi was so cool back then with the object oriented pascal.

I kinda miss Borland

datakan··on OpenAI’s head of ethics leaves less than a year after joining
You don't fire an ethicist for that. You fire an engineer or your CISO. Firing an ethicist is like firing a marketing person. It signals nothing to anyone.

Yes, its why those long crossbody lanyards are now so popular.

datakan··on Iowa-led states ask OpenAI to keep their bots on a leash
"Attorney General Brenna Bird announced today she is leading a coalition of 15 states demanding transparency and accountability from the AI company OpenAI, led by Sam Altman, for its complete lack of oversight and transparency in the hacking of Hugging Face, another AI company."

Title should be edited. Its Iowa leading a coalition of many other states, not just Iowa on its own.

Dear diary......
datakan··on Online ad giant Adform was hacked, proving once again why ad blockers are needed
I read an article a while ago about some scientist who decided that he wanted to go around investigating a certain species of leech that lives inside a hippo's butt, like attached directly to the colon. He suggested that, as big as the hippo is, it probably wasn't really all that aware that the leeches are even in its butt, but that's where the leech likes to be because there's a good source of blood there for the leech to feed on.

Now, the scientist is probably right, the hippo probably goes its whole life not really knowing that it has all these leeches in its butt. It might feel a little pain in the butt, but the hippo probably isn't concerned with why that pain is there, much less how or even if it can get rid of it, it's just something that the hippo has always lived with. The hippo accepts that one of the facts of daily life is that you just need to live with some pain in your butt.

Now, imagine (and believe me, this is a hypothetical), if the hippo let someone root around inside its butt and remove every one of the leeches, and even stop any others from attaching. It might take a day or two to get used to and get back to normal, but the hippo would wake up one day and realize that it no longer has a pain in its butt. It can still do everything it used to do, it can frolic in the water, it can roam around and find the tender little pieces of grass, it can do that thing where it poops and swishes its tail around to spread it all over its neighbors, and it realizes that it can do all of those things it likes without having that pain in its butt.

Now, maybe the leeches could talk. Maybe the leeches talk to the hippos and they say things like, listen, hippo, my life cycle depends on you letting me get into your butt when you're in the water. I need to drink your blood and drop out some eggs, so that other leeches can be born and start the cycle all over again. It's not really a big price you pay, I mean sure, there's a little pain in your butt, but I need you to do this. If you want to get in the water, it's just something you have to deal with. It's the price of admission. If you get in the water without letting me in your butt, it's like you're stealing the water.

I bet that the hippo would hear that, and would still want to continue going about its day without any pain in its butt. I don't think the hippo would feel very sorry for the butt leech. Sure, maybe the butt leech contributes to the aquatic ecosystem, maybe its eggs or the dead leeches get eaten by other things and fertilize the grass that the hippo likes to eat. But, if the leeches weren't there, the grass would just find other nutrients. Even though the leech is trying to argue that it's a necessary part of this ecosystem, it's actually just a pain in the butt. In reality, despite what it tells everyone else, the major beneficiary of anything that the butt leech does is the actual butt leech.

Anyway, I just had a thought that advertisers kind of sound like hippo butt leeches.

datakan··on Apple says more ex-employees may have taken confidential data to OpenAI
Really don't like all the drama around this. Should be dealt with in court, not tried in the press.

Both sides should learn to remain silent and work the case through legal channels.

datakan··on Don't start a startup with the goal of getting acquired
I worked for a startup in the late 90's founded by 4 college friends that just wanted to build cool stuff. None of them wanted to actually be CEO so they sorta rotated the job between them every few months while they built. Eventually they needed a dedicated person at the helm to handle CEO things so they hired a guy that was a VP at Microsoft at some point. The company was sold off within 6 months and everyone was gone.

Sometimes entrepreneurs have good intentions and just get fucked over.

datakan··on Nobel Disease
> There's a statistic similar to this showing that socially successful people tend to think they're above the law.

That's actually the premise of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. If you actually read the book there is no Mr. Hyde, it was Jekyll all along. It was a commentary on the times it was written in where the rich elite would behave horribly in "private" while maintaining a social standing in public suited to their supposed stature. They believed they were above the law.

datakan··on AI-Generated Images Discourage Me from Reading Your Blog
"I’d rather see a shitty Microsoft Paint drawing as opposed to some AI image."

Interesting because I'm seeing tons of YouTube channels using AI generated stick figure animations with AI voice overlays to trick people into thinking it's not AI generated.

A lot of them contradict each other too which is what got me going down the rabbit hole of researching it.
datakan··on The Dunning-Kruger effect may just be a data artefact (2020)
There are tons going back to around 2015. Search Replication Crisis and Psychology. Only about 36-39% of studies can be replicated.
datakan··on The Dunning-Kruger effect may just be a data artefact (2020)
Replication crisis. More than half of all psychology studies are not reproducible.

I'm at the point honestly, where I don't even consider psychology to be a science anymore.
