data_ders··on Parser, Better, Faster, Stronger: A peek at the new dbt engine
Thought an update on where we're at post acquistion of SDF would be interesting to this group!
data_ders··on A year of uv: pros, cons, and should you migrate
whoa! TIL thanks will check it out
data_ders··on A year of uv: pros, cons, and should you migrate
conda user for 10 years and uv skeptic for 18 months.

I get it! I loved my long-lived curated conda envs.

I finally tried uv to manage an environment and it’s got me hooked. That a projects dependencies can be so declarative and separated from the venv really sings for me! No more meticulous tracking of a env.yml or requirements.txt just ‘uv add` and `uv sync` and that’s it! I just don’t think about it anymore

data_ders··on United States Power Outage Map
Dope project!

FYI on your LLC page has “queries” spelled “qurries”. Not sure if it’s intentional or not though.

data_ders··on I built an AI company to save my open source project
Great story and interesting product!

Reminds me of NextMv [1] loved their episode on SWE daily. Can anyone compare them to this and how they’re doing?

data_ders··on Chimes at Midnight (2024)
Heavy recommend the biography of Stewart Brand that’s quoted throughout!
data_ders··on Reviving a Dead Audio Format: The Return of ZZM
Amazing context! Yeah the article’s snippets reminded me of Sonic Pi

data_ders··on Reviving a Dead Audio Format: The Return of ZZM
so impressive the work that went into this.

TIL that markdown-like audio file formats existed more than 20 years ago!

data_ders··on Show HN: AI-powered Chinese name generator
Love it! Especially the generated png summary.

One suggestion for “unsupervised”/“unlabelled” ML scenarios like this is to give 3 choices and let user pick the one most meaningful to them.

For example, my daughter’s name is Alba. It went with “white” as primary translation and gave 白 (Bai2) but felt 小白 was a little too on the nose lol.

I changed the input to be “Dawn” (another meaning of the name) and got a somewhat better result of 晨.

Might be nice to provide an extra descriptor word too.

Still very cool and wish I had this when I lived in China. I went with the transliteration of my name: 安德斯 (Anders). Regret that I didn’t get one more meaningful!

Two nits: 1) I want to see the history of names I’ve previously generated 2) in the png, the headings on each side are different but I imagine the content is the same just a different language? I.e. “Character meanings” vs “character analysis”

data_ders··on Using your Apple device as an access card in unsupported systems
Love seeing the Xiamen City Metro card! Would recognize the scenery from anywhere
data_ders··on A Replacement for BERT
what’s ST stand for here? I googled and only got results for BERT STS (semantic text similarity)
data_ders··on Ask HN: Does anyone use 1Password CLI in the terminal for envvar management?
that's what I currently use! was tempted by 1P CLI as it would support a cleaner sharing of envvars amongst a team
data_ders··on Show HN: Data Formulator – AI-powered data visualization from Microsoft Research
way cool! I hope to take it for a spin tomorrow!

Q: Does your team see potential value in a DSL for succinctly describing visualizations to an LLM as Hex did with their DSL for Vega-lite specs [1]?

data_ders··on Vapour: A typed superset of the R programming language
Is it fair to compare this to what Typescript provides for JavaScript?
data_ders··on Back to our roots
wow what a candid, and humble take! Really impressive. Lots to be learned here.

However, one thing I am curious about is how their VC investor, SignalFire, is ok with this "back to it's roots" terminus. Do they still own the same amount of the company as before?

data_ders··on Python toolkit for quantitative finance

lol when you click "our story" [1] it says:

also under "Travel":

haha no kidding!

data_ders··on Chatbots tell people what they want to hear
this isn't surprising to me. the internet reinforces our biases and chatbots are trained on the internet. isn't the same true of all forms of media that we consume? there's perhaps a virtuous cycle to this self-selection process. i get there's a bad component, but

data_ders··on Heat Pumps Take on Cold Climates
For how long is gas likely to be cheaper? It’s generally more scarce right? Does anyone have predictions on US price over the next few decades?
data_ders··on Heat Pumps Take on Cold Climates
I feel you! There’s a lot of specifics that are hard to know without digging in and making mistakes!

I just found out my heat pump was configured incorrectly in the Nest Thermostat bc I have a Rheem and their heat cool valves are reversed from typical.

TLDR my January heating bill was $500 bc heat pump never came on!

data_ders··on YouTube addiction, one month sober
If knowledge were the only requirement, everyone would have six-pack abs and millions in the bank?

I agree that your suggestion is rational, but the article brings up addiction and lack of control which I feel describes me. I’d love a “just block it”, escape hatch of a solution but maybe I’m SOL and have to learn mindfulness

data_ders··on YouTube addiction, one month sober
I’m so addicted to the internet that when I block social media, I find I get quite the similar fix from work Slack. Like browsing channels I have no business being a part of and constantly checking for validation of my comments via emoji reactions.

Does anyone know of ways to be a successful work-from-home knowledge worker while also locking down Slack to not be another slot machine??

Does anyone else feel conflicted about the internet as both a means to a comfortable/lucretive career but also the ultimate drug?

I’ve thought of only allowing Slack for 10 min each hour to make it more like an IV drop of info, but what happens when I actually need to DM in real time?

meta P.S. I’m refreshing this and reading the replies — what a rush! So much more rewarding than what I should be doing. :)

data_ders··on Metric Time
I'd pay good money for an analog wall clock that has 10 hour days and 100 minute hours! AFAICT, this product does not exist. Closest thing I could find was this blog [1]

data_ders··on PostgreSQL 16
anytime a huge multi-decades-old FOSS project lands a milestone, I can't help but equate it to something like a moon landing.

So much (unpaid) work and thought goes into stewarding open software. Kudos to the whole team. Software infra is just as important as bridges and roads -- here's hoping we can fund it at least as well, for humanity's sake. [1]
