dasickis··on ShotPut (YC S15) helps fulfill product orders at a price that works for startups
We had one before but the types of products varied so wildly the ultimate cost was different. Currently we capture all that data and give our final price which uses our calculator.

Though we'll discuss this issue and if it keeps coming up we'll act on it.

Generally we call inserts: marketing messages companies put in each shipment.

There's another material called dunnage i.e. fill that is placed such as air packs, bubble wrap, paper, cardboard, mushroom (yes a product made from mushrooms!), etc. are used to keep the product tight.

Another method is to use a smaller box which cuts down on both shipping costs as well as is a more secure way of securing products.

Shipwire is a fantastic company, however, their prices have been historically high and their customer support has lacked recently. Though their international warehouses are a huge boost to small companies that need that capability.

Our biggest differentiator is that we give you an upfront invoice and once you pay you'll never see a penny increase. Even your shipping is upfront (we're working on fixing it now as we speak).

No. Actually the amount has been increasing exponentially the last few years especially because of fast prototyping due to 3D printing and crowd funding. Additionally many of the new shippers have much different profiles than those before. Finally subscriptions have increased rapidly which is even more shipping.

The last trend is recycling subscriptions e.g. Le Tote which has increased the need for our service. (Le Tote is not a customer).

Shovels & Levis still seem to be doing well ;)

We do want to clarify, we can work with businesses ranging from a few hundred orders/ month all the way up to 100,000's of orders. The way our network is set up, we can easily scale up or down the fulfillment needs of our customers. We work with many young businesses today because they need help finding their first warehouse, but we also work with more advanced businesses too.

We do our best to be price competitive which is part of our pricing model. We never try to win on a price war but we're better in terms of pricing compared to both FBA & Shipwire.

Working with Pakible is phenomenal we've recommended all our customers who want custom boxes to use their service! And we already handle their fulfillment.

Amazon also has a very arcane fee structure. Our fees are guaranteed to be the final price you see on the page. We've developed our pricing model so we have confidence we can manage your account without any issues.

Additionally, you have more control of the process with us than Amazon.

This is Praful another co-founder of Shotput. Happy to answer any questions regarding tech or operations of our company and the fulfillment industry as a whole.
dasickis··on How To Find Your First Warehouse, Part 3
As former product entrepreneurs, we've experienced the head-rattling frustration of finding a warehouse. After talking with 100's of product companies, we saw their struggles as well. Surprisingly, there was no resource on how to actually do this... So we wrote one: How to Find Your First Warehouse (Without the Headache).

Full disclosure: Our company makes it really easy for product companies to outsource their fulfillment, reducing the process from a month to a matter of minutes. We are the only 3PL that offers guaranteed upfront pricing with no hidden fees surprising you later. We're able to do this with our warehouse API that gives us more transparency into our network of facilities.

Ultimately, we believe you should spend your time on what you do best (ie., product development, sales, etc., not necessarily fulfillment). We hope our guide can help aid and expedite your search.

Feel free to ask us any questions you have about fulfillment, we're happy to offer any advice or guidance.

dasickis··on Offer HN: Free Use of Agricultural Land 30 miles Northwest of Chicago
My startup builds specialized autonomous vehicles for warehouses & factories but would be interested in experimenting in outdoor systems for agriculture.

I understand that John Deere and other companies have some amazing systems they've developed. Our goal is to produce vehicles that are easy to install, deploy, and low-cost.

dasickis··on CEO Aaron Levie Will Only Own 4.1% Of Box When It IPOs, Investor DFJ Owns 25.5%
4% for a company like Box is pretty consistent (maybe slightly higher).

dasickis··on Startup Idea: Robot Cars
Also, Google's team (mostly from Carnegie or it's off-shoot teams) has been working on the problem for more than a decade as they took the Stanford car which came from Thrun who came from CM.

The problem to go after initially is best conditions highway driving. Additionally, low-speed (<=20MPH) is reasonable challenge. Where things get tricky is building out a model for medium speed (30 - 40MPH) where there's pedestrians.

Check out Navia: http://induct-technology.com/en/products/navia, they'll be deploying in Stanford soon.
dasickis··on Startup Idea: Robot Cars
We have a forum to discuss open source implementations of robotic cars: http://www.sherecar.org/, we got pretty bogged down with some development we're working on.

Or even a college which the average distance between any two people is 2 - 3 degrees. Additionally, this story is written from the perspective of Harry Potter so weaker ties won't be included as it doesn't advance the story.

dasickis··on Ask YC: Does competition motivate you?
Have you tried competitive programming sites or entered in competitions? Or does the general idea of competition motivate you? I've been thinking about this philosophically for the past few days.
dasickis··on Ask news.YC: developers how do you get beta testers?
Well I haven't created a community yet, but I've been working with some friends and we're starting to create this startup. Our plan is to first get our university involved and start marketing from there. I just want to know what kind of metrics are you looking for with the feedback and what would you be willing to pay for this type of service? I believe we can create the community with the right amount of effort. Once that's created what value would you like to see from this startup?
