Identifying as independents means nothing. 67% of independents in 2018 viewed one party more favorable and were unfavorable to other. In other words, the independents have a partisan lean towards one party and are more likely to vote that way.

darth_avocado··on Adult Film Producer Unmasks Prolific 'John DOE' Torrent Pirate as Meta Executive
It’s much more expensive. You as a consumer can buy a movie for $5 with a DVD on sale. But tos generally don’t include commercial activities. If you reach out to the film studio to get their permission, they can charge you anywhere from $10K to $1M+ for same thing.

And I’m sure meta paid for some specific content but they generally wouldn’t want to set a precedent where they paid everyone.

I don’t know if Claude performs similarly from a percentage standpoint, but if you’re using it for search (online or personal docs or wikis), it often also just makes things up.

When you point it out, it’ll do the “ohh you’re absolutely right!” bs. Marketing material and management that believes the material wants to pretend that AI agents are junior employees, but forget that junior employees get fired for doing something like this.

darth_avocado··on Global demand for sand spawned a worldwide boom in illegal mining (2015)
You’re talking about a product that’s quite literally “pick it up and sell it”. Adding a single step to the process will be economically more expensive. Mining, logging, fishing etc. are all similar examples.

The opposite can also be true. Just because a position was marked as “hired” doesn’t mean anyone was actually hired.

> Let’s not pretend X is bad because of Musk alone. HN can be just as terrible too.

I am yet to see racial slurs, hateful speech, scams, porn (consensual and non consensual) or any of the endless things that are okay on X but not on HN. So no, HN can not and will not be just as terrible. The two platforms aren’t even close in terms of the health of the discourse.

darth_avocado··on Why aren't smart people happier? (2022)
Im not smart (maybe average), but a lot of my unhappiness starts from just having access to information. And then more I process the information, the more unhappy I become. Smarter people than me probably have more information and are able to process it faster, uncovering effects that are not readily perceived by normal folks like myself.
darth_avocado··on Colorado River plummets as lakes Powell and Mead drop to record lows
Who would’ve thought that growing water intensive crops in the middle of the desert and growing cities like Phoenix with suburbs with lush green lawns at a much higher rate than rest of the country was going to be without consequences.
darth_avocado··on India has paved the way for charging merchants a fee on UPI transactions
Is this a common experience now? I haven’t been there in a while, but one used to be able to use credit cards at bigger establishments and smaller vendors used to accept cash even if UPI was advertised in their shop. Rarely was anyone mad that you didn’t use UPI.
darth_avocado··on Thanks to social media, canned sardines are a scarcity on the supermarket shelf
Bivalves are probably the lowest impact proteins and are already part of the diet across the world. The sequester carbon, clean up the water they grow in and are filter feeders that can leverage the coastline that will eventually be under water due to rising sea levels.
darth_avocado··on Thanks to social media, canned sardines are a scarcity on the supermarket shelf
They are wrong too. But my comment was specifically addressing your argument that criticism only exists because it’s China and not because they are wrong. Whataboutism isn’t a great defense here. Everyone doing it needs to not do it. My parent comment that started this thread talks about everyone and not just one country:

> The idea that international waters are available for anyone and everyone to exploit is just wild.

Edit: Order of magnitude also matters here. Chinese fishing fleet is much larger than all the nations you mentioned combined. Any nation taking that much from the oceans which are a globally shared resource and a lifeline for the planet should receive scrutiny and pushback, regardless of who they are.

darth_avocado··on Thanks to social media, canned sardines are a scarcity on the supermarket shelf
First of all, just because something is legal, doesn’t mean it’s good.

But more importantly, specifically Chinese fishing vessels aren’t exactly innocent either. They go dark to go and fish in waters where fishing isn’t allowed including eco sensitive zones. Part of the problem with the dark fleet is “how much they fish”. Claiming 200 vessels are fishing while allowing 1000 vessels will obviously lead to overfishing.

Then there is the whole “illegal fishing” including but not limited to hunting sharks and other endangered species, using banned fishing practices, threatening local fishermen across the coast of Africa to corner parts of the fishing grounds etc.

All of this is well documented. So it’s not about China bad, it’s about them skirting the rules.

darth_avocado··on Thanks to social media, canned sardines are a scarcity on the supermarket shelf
The oceans are depleted. And some countries with shadow fleets are to blame more than the others. But somehow it’s not even a small priority for most countries. Whales are dying because they are malnourished and that is an indicator that there’s barely anything left. The idea that international waters are available for anyone and everyone to exploit is just wild.

darth_avocado··on What's Behind the Sharp Drop in Labor Force Participation?
Im in the prime working age and if I didn’t have responsibilities (mortgage, health insurance, dependents etc.), I’d quit today and not participate for at least a couple of years. Corporate treatment of workers has deteriorated at an unprecedented rate since Covid and based on my anecdotal evidence we probably have a national level burnout and depression epidemic that no one is talking about or looking into. Most people I talk to in my age group are experiencing the same feelings.

darth_avocado··on AI's debt binge can't last, hidden borrowing reaches $1.65T
People who are poor still have to participate in the economy. When you have a trillion dollar bet not pan out, somehow your minimum wage job no matter what it is, will be impacted because that’s what a recession does.

Yeah. Xbox is profitable despite how terrible it is in terms of game exclusives, just not 30% profit margins profitable. Instead of focusing on that they buy studios to close them and then wonder why they don’t have better margins.
