darrhiggs··on Poll: What would it take for another company to poach you?
I'm happy freelancing ~10hrs a week and earning about the UK's average wage. Three days a week at a company would be perfect.
darrhiggs··on Mt.Gox does not mean "Mount" Gox
I saw this yesterday when I was investigating the Union Flag. It seems as though the Union Jack story, one which my dad (a now retired naval commander) has told me many times, is not a true as we're led to believe.

darrhiggs··on I'm a shut-in. This is my story
Yeah, the one I get is:

"Me and 'X' have been talking and we think you should do 'Y'"

Great, now I have groups of people talking about me.

darrhiggs··on Amazon Profits Fall 45 Percent, Still the Most Amazing Company in the World
Is amazon.es for latin america? AFAIK .es is España, and although it's ≈45MM, it's hardly a massive market WRT latin america.

It's not like their money hidden in a vault. Furthermore they may have spent it, thus converting their money into a non-monetary asset like a home, yet it still counts when calculating wealth.

darrhiggs··on Layers with Carbonate Content Inside McLaughlin Crater on Mars
"This view of layered rocks on the floor of McLaughlin Crater shows sedimentary rocks that contain spectroscopic evidence for minerals formed through interaction with water"
darrhiggs··on Ruby: Singletons, Threads, and Flexibility
It's absolutely fine. As it's the mechanism for attracting a wider audience to something that benefit is being derived from, reminding them to up-vote the article seems mutually beneficial. You are not forcing anyone to do it.
darrhiggs··on What is the maximum length of a URL?
Don't do it that way then. How about a using /queries collection? You could create a query there and have the server return a link to the results using the 'location' header.
darrhiggs··on Harvard Scientist Proposes Refreezing Arctic to Prevent Global-Warming Disaster
I suppose that as good as this sounds, and I have heard about it many times [1][2][3], it boils down to opportunity cost. To me it will allow for a powerful counter argument when it comes to hitting emissions targets.

Rajeevk, this is absolutely fantastic, great job!

But… why don't you support DOT as an export type? It would be so unbelievably awesome for me to prototype in Lekh and then finess with DOT.

Anyway congratulations on the release!

darrhiggs··on MIT’s Freaky Non-Stick Coating Keeps Ketchup Flowing
Did it never occur to them that they could just turn the bottle upside-down? Is that not why they designed the lids like that; so you could just stand them up on the lid?
darrhiggs··on Google’s most advanced voice search has arrived on iOS
Why would this be down voted when the blog post suggests you should do this?
darrhiggs··on There's only one exchange rate

darrhiggs··on Don't Fall Asleep at the Wheel: Successful Entrepreneurs Have Lives
You, are right; but there is ambiguity. 'Startup' is not never mentioned by the authors.
darrhiggs··on How To Cheat On Facebook Apps Permissions
This only solves half the problem. I recently tried this with yahoo reader, yet on the yahoo site there was a social reader widget with my friends and my reading history. I paused it when I realised but it seems you need to be aware of more than what permissions they have on the facebook platform; something many of my friends had not realised.
darrhiggs··on Buffett to buy 63 newspapers
The non-obvious thing is that if 6 years ago Ebitda was '100' and today it is around '10' then Mr. Buffet would have paid 40 rather than 900. Comparing the Ebitda makes you think the cost was 45% of 6 years ago, but if Ebitda has fallen in this period then, as in my example, the price is just 4.5% of 6 years ago.

If these businesses are able to survive the next few years and get to grips with all the new mediums of publication then Ebitda may well return to the levels of 6 years ago and then Mr. buffet would be sitting very pretty indeed.

Does anyone have the comparative Ebitda figures?
