darrenwestall··on Ask HN: Have you started a business because nobody wanted to hire you?
Absolutely. I wanted to move away from the technical side of business as I really enjoy the commercial aspects too, but once you’re a CTO, it’s very hard (and unusual) to become a CEO in an established business.

Now I get to do a bit of everything I enjoy.

I've dropped you an email, it doesn't seem to handle jobs at the moment but I'd love to explore this with you further.

Awesome - I’ll try this tomorrow and let you know if it works for our use case.

We currently pay a different provider £299 per month for 10k requests so we will definitely migrate if it does what we need.

A few questions, does it handle pages that are loaded by JS? And would it find something like a house price or job salary?

darrenwestall··on Ask HN: What new business you did you start in 2018?
www.contentapp.ai

A social media assistant for recruiters.

Going well so far with 60+ paying clients in just under 5 months. A long, exciting journey ahead :-).

darrenwestall··on Show HN: Weekly reports that list all key changes to competitors' web sites
This could be very helpful to staffing agencies. You can alert them when one of their customers puts a new job on their career site, when a member of staff leaves or just provide them with insight into the client so they have conversations points beyond remembering they have a dog.

I’ll show it to a few of our customers and hopefully they get in touch with you.

All the best with your new venture.

darrenwestall··on Ask HN: What Do You Recommend for a Minimal Viable Launch for a SaaS?
If you can do it by hand, launch it. Automate it once you have proven the commercial need, or when the manual pain point becomes too much.

Do the marketing first. Build it and they will come is bullshit.

That should let you ship early, fail early and not waste a bunch of time. If that doesn’t happen, you know you’re on to something and it’s a fantastic problem to have!

darrenwestall··on My first business gave my competition more sales, and I was too dumb to see it
Appreciate the advice, it’s my first blog post so I’ll be sure to do that on the next.

The ending certainly isn’t my elevator pitch though, it was more what I’m up to now and how I’ve learned, I can see how that could annoy with the linkbacks etc. though.

The offer of help at the end is genuine, with anything. If anyone here thinks I can help, just get in touch.

darrenwestall··on Ask HN: Scratch your employer's itch?
What does your contract say? If you’re not in a development role at your current company, I suspect it will only talk about soliciting customers away or staff.

You’d need to build it in your own time and on your own hardware of course.

I’d personally be up front with them that you’re working on it, get a letter from your boss too - purely as a just in case.

If they say no and you truly believe in the idea, leave and build it anyway. You can negotiate your building of this with a new employer upfront if needs be.

darrenwestall··on Ask HN: How you get recruiters to run after you instead of the other way around?
Uploading your CV to a job board is still a good way to show you’re active, recruiters (in house and agency) will get daily alerts to new CVs matching keywords they’ve preset.
darrenwestall··on Ask HN: How long did your app take to be approved by Facebook?
It took us around 3 weeks, and that includes 2 re-submissions after feedback. My only advice is to read every detail of their guidelines as they check every little thing, so it’s best to make sure you’ve done everything upfront.
darrenwestall··on Show HN: Automatically turn your blog posts into emails for your readers
That’s an easy one to solve by running it through fetchrss or feedity.
darrenwestall··on Show HN: Automatically turn your blog posts into emails for your readers
Have you considered the recruitment use case? Many staffing agencies advertise jobs on their website but don’t have the job alert functionality a job board would offer. If you turn this into a “alert me”, the next time they post a job matching the criteria you’ll email candidates for them. Same technology, just a different niche - one that I think will be more profitable.

How can I get in touch with you please? I’d love to plug this into what I’m doing, there is a lot of synergy.
darrenwestall··on Ask HN: Looking for a coach
I’d love to chat, how can I get in touch with you?
darrenwestall··on Show HN: Currents API - News access through request
I’m keen to use it but I want to know it won’t disappear overnight - can you tell me more about the team behind it?
darrenwestall··on Ask HN: Whom do you follow for personal growth?
Kerwin Rae & Gary Vaynerchuk
