darrenkopp··on Conversation skills essentials
I think the rule "Don't interrupt" still holds, but is more nuanced. If you just cut someone off while they are talking and start saying whatever you had been wanting to say that whole time, I'd consider that interrupting them. However, I don't consider it interrupting if I am saying something complementary to what they are currently saying that is brief but is signaling that I want to say something.

For example I'd give an auditory cue that I want to say something by saying more words than I normally would just to signal that I'm actively listening such as instead of just saying "mmmhmmm" I'd say "Yeah something similar happened to me" and then give them time to finish up their thought and begin speaking myself OR allow them to move the conversation over to me explicitly.

Depending on the speaker, if they don't pick up on that cue or continue to just ramble on, I repeat and intensify that to the point where I may actually interrupt them so that I can speak, but at that point it's not necessarily a negative behavior, it's just neutral. My interruption negates their negative behavior of orrating rather than conversing.

Yeah. At my last job we made a pivot table tool feature into our project and we named it Pito after Pito Salas, thinking we were so clever and finally came up with a slick little branding for a feature. But that's slang for penis in Spanish... name lasted for a couple of years before it was replaced.
darrenkopp··on BreakingFormation: AWS CloudFormation Vulnerability
Why did they blur the information when there are pretty advanced de-blurring algorithms out there? Seems like if you want to redact the information you need to completely omit the subsequent pixels rather than just adding a blur effect. Perhaps since the issue is fully resolved and I would guess that AWS rotated everyone's credentials?
darrenkopp··on Do not use 'week year': YYYY
Came here to post this, and to add the pronunciation guide as "why? why??"

OP mentions the trending repos so I believe they are looking here: https://github.com/trending

Is the algorithm that manages the ranking here well known? I'd suspect that it isn't just based on stars.
darrenkopp··on Framework Benchmarks Round 19
I'd say I do about 40% raw ado and 60% ORM overall. I think raw ado is completely valid in a performance benchmark because you usually step down to raw ado for that very reason: optimizing performance.
darrenkopp··on Show HN: Twitch Roulette – Find and chat with streamers who are streaming alone
Great idea. It'd be great if you could select a game / category. Reason is I'd actually be able to have an actual chat with someone if I knew something about the game.
darrenkopp··on VS Code was lost on shutdown with pending update (2018)
Looks like gpm commented with more context on this and your comment is likely still more correct than my response: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=23019121
darrenkopp··on VS Code was lost on shutdown with pending update (2018)
I think it's shutdown of the computer, not shutdown of VS code. The updater starts executing during the shutdown and I'm guessing the system is terminating the install process and it's not rolling back appropriately (or it is rolling back but only after the uninstall has executed)
darrenkopp··on VS Code was lost on shutdown with pending update (2018)
That's a good point, additional items could be included, though the installer code seems to be included in the source code: https://github.com/microsoft/vscode/blob/master/build/win32/...
darrenkopp··on VS Code was lost on shutdown with pending update (2018)
When I first read this issue, I was assuming the user was losing unsaved code in their editor, which seemed like user error and I thought they had resolved that issue long ago. After reading the comments and reading the summary again, I'm pretty sure that this is actually the background updater has downloaded, detects that code is closed and starts to update automatically, but since the computer is rebooting, it gets killed.

The first comment about just checking if shutdown is in progress should work.

darrenkopp··on VS Code was lost on shutdown with pending update (2018)
VS Code is an open source IDE
darrenkopp··on Sourcetrail, interactive source explorer, is now free and open-source
It's also fairly high up on a few subreddits, so it's not just HN traffic.
darrenkopp··on Disney Announces $12.99 Bundle for Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+
Maybe that is what rentals at Blockbuster cost at the end of their run (or before they were super popular). I used to go to a wonderful local movie store for $0.99 - $1.99 rentals because blockbuster was $3.99+ a rental. Granted, that was for 5 days, but Blockbuster was definitely pricey in it's prime. Disclaimer: pricing is just based on one suburban area in the United States.
darrenkopp··on Should array length be stored into a local variable in C#?
I feel like I saw something about how the JIT only checks the bounds once when going in reverse, but I can't find anything concrete to back that up, so we'll have to go with the 10 year old write-up for now saying: no, it is not optimized compared to the Length optimization. https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/clrcodegeneration/2009/08/1...
darrenkopp··on Amazon Personalize: Real-Time Recommendation
Unlikely because you aren't going to share personal, identifiable information with this service; you would just send the primary key of the user in your database (usually an integer, guid, etc, as long as you aren't using some string that includes personal information like email or possibly username where they user picks their own name).

You can share all the information you want with other entities under GDPR as long as the information you are sending as long as you can't uniquely identify someone from that data _without_ additional information.

darrenkopp··on The Discord Store Beta
Honestly, no. What you are talking about is known as "ghosting" and games where that's an issue there is usually some way to limit "spectator" mode or put the viewing of what's happening in the game on delay. For everything else, it's just expected / wanted to have continuous voice communication.

There's nothing in discord that Valve hasn't had built-in to steam or other applications have been doing for years.

darrenkopp··on OpenAI Five Benchmark: Results
It's not as bad as it sounds. The bots are hard-coded to follow a item guide that is published by TorteDeLini, but at the same time many human players do the exact same thing. I'd say that most players blindly follow those guides from 1.5K to the low 3K mmr brackets most games.
darrenkopp··on Discussion if Google Fonts is GDPR compliant
The terms are broad in GDPR, so you need the DPA just for Amazon to store it, as that's "processing". However, you don't need your users to confirm that, they agree to share the information with you (controller) and you'll have some sort of terms in your privacy policy allowing you to share personal information with 3rd parties you regularly interact with for legitimate purposes who will be bound by the terms set forth in your own privacy policy.
darrenkopp··on Discussion if Google Fonts is GDPR compliant
You can absolutely store IP addresses (and other personal information) without consent and be GDPR compliant. You just need to explain what you are storing, for what purpose, who you share it with, how long it's stored, and comply with the "rights" put forth in the legislation. GDPR merely constrains what information Google can share without your consent and requires them to be more explicit in stating what information they gather about you.
darrenkopp··on I Got Catfished by a Candidate
Oh, I see what you are saying. Yeah, that is a good point.
darrenkopp··on I Got Catfished by a Candidate
Yes, but they might have naively used the given number rather than the number they personally had, out of convenience, which would have caused the catfish to succeed.
darrenkopp··on Ask HN: One tab on Chrome takes about 100MB memory, why?
Yes, they don't offer that on their laptops, but what the OP is talking about is a desktop machine. Apple definitely offers 32 GB in their desktops.

The iPhone 8 Plus is roughly the same size as the X, not the iPhone 8.
darrenkopp··on Apple TV 4K brings home the magic of cinema with 4K and HDR
I use my iPhone so I don't care about the remote that much. The 4K aspect is much more important to me because, honestly, the Android TV experience that is included with my TV is much, much worse. It was pretty reasonable at first, but I think an update has basically destroyed wifi stability and netflix constantly refuses to connect.

Finally, I can use my 4K TV reliably.
