I'm a System Administrator by day, YC Lurker by night. I love learning about startups, startup culture & what motivates people mostly because I can't be bothered to come up with something so awesome & useful as the rest of you. :(

darksim905··on When did Google get so weird?
I still believe this AI push out of nowhere is due to the current Government in power state side. Making everyone question themselves and each other and being uncertain about facts while being inundated with techbro fake news called hallucinations is a recipe for disaster for older populations that don't 'trust but verify' like most technology inclined people. This is all by design and we'll falling for it.
darksim905··on When did Google get so weird?
How did you google this, and did you use the dumb search, or specifically 'AI mode' lens?

Because I did this and got a vastly different result from you:

Yes, the Halifax Wanderers can still mathematically qualify for the 2026 Canadian Premier League (CPL) playoffs. The top four teams advance to the postseason. Following their 1-0 loss to Atlético Ottawa on September 26, 2026, the Wanderers sit in fifth place, just below the playoff line.

With a indexed table of the games and the playoff table, with a breakdown of what the points they need to achieve to do so.

The search window may not always crawl sources. AI mode specifically does some research before giving you a response. Not sure what you're on about.

darksim905··on Flock Offers Employees Buyouts as Customers Flee
It's weird to see that any towns even remotely close to Austin would support Flock at all in the first place.
darksim905··on Flock Offers Employees Buyouts as Customers Flee
It must be nerve wracking to live in your shoes day to day. This is, probably due to flying through an airport like JFK. I'm also not sure what you mean by heavily armed agents. Most MPs at airports just have pistols on them.

ribbon connector like ribbon cables used in IDE/PATA drives? Wild, are they known for breaking down like that?

darksim905··on Hackers Got Inside a Flock Camera
Interesting that they are a YC Company. Does yC do any ethics vetting of saying "No, let's stop fascism before it spreads?"
darksim905··on Hackers Got Inside a Flock Camera
They want the good, bad and ugly to flock to them as it were and vaporize them so Axon and Motorola Solutions can just pick up right where they left off. And people will just ignore or forget it because it's not the same company.

When your follower/following count is small and you're getting to know people and build a community of people you otherwise wouldn't meet IRL, it can be a great thing. When you start getting inundated with too much information when you have 10K + followers, it can be overwhelming and you lose the signal within the noise and find that it may start affecting other parts of life. I suppose each person is different, but that burned me out and made me uninterested and I burned it all down. I found I was losing sleep checking my phone and getting unusually addicted to stupid things.

how is anyone else at fault here? If someone is ignorant of the capabilities and controls afforded to them for expensive, high ticket, important items such as vehicles ... they don't really have anyone else to blame except them, and perhaps oversight from the designer or vendor of the product.
darksim905··on Your intellectual fly is open when you use an LLM to author a post (2025)
I think you meant that translation is, case in point, based on inference. The person doing the translating is inferring, based on context, intent and meaning and imparting that on what their output is. That's generally not desired from a taxonomy perspective.
darksim905··on Dyson CameraJet electric toothbrush
I use my scaler before brushing and I use it for getting off certain things that bother me. It beats going to the dentist for some chronic issues I may deal with. I would say it should be used in conjunction with a waterpik as it would be far too abrasive/damaging toward the gums, for sure.
darksim905··on Dyson CameraJet electric toothbrush
healthy teeth are not the same as healthy gums, or oral health as a whole.
darksim905··on Dyson CameraJet electric toothbrush
an ultrasonic scaler is far better at removing plaque and build up than a waterpik. I find that a waterpik is only really best at areas where there is high crowding, or hard to reach areas behind molars, etc.

darksim905··on I made tinnitus my friend, then it disappeared [video]
It sort of helps cancel it out at the time if I'm listening and on a computer. But as soon as that ends, the ringing continues.

I can count on one hand the nights I've had restful sleep, and one of those was after got home recovering from a surgery. Who knows.

darksim905··on I made tinnitus my friend, then it disappeared [video]
This page has so many dang scripts and the iframe doesn't do it any favors. I've allowed everything and it still doesn't load. There are far too few specialists that work on tinnitus and so many dental and ENT specialists choose to not take it seriously enough.

I have high pitched 7k hz bi-lateral ringing, 24x7. I've had it my whole life. I am convinced part of it is due to being born very premature (I was 1 lb 11 1/2 ounces). I believe it may be cervical and/or neurological (vascular, specifically).

It's so frustrating because nothing has happened. Masking only does so much. Sitting around reading a book, or trying to sleep is almost impossible.

I've been wanting to make a documentary style video on this diagnosis/issue, because a more people suffer like this than people realize. One medical professional that was helping me passed away a few years ago and that still eats away at me, because he really cared that he wasn't able to help me and it ate away at him. I still miss him.

the average user? probably. but in a corporate environment or a power user's personal setup? probably not anywhere near as painful, and holding on to slightly older OSes because the quality and kinks were figured out a long time ago. On Windows 11, right clicking and bringing up the context menu is painfully slow. On Windows 7/10, it's pretty quick and simplified. It has no 'change for change sake' as part of it.

Recently started working at an org that is a very heavy Google only shop that ditched Microsoft. There are some things you just get used to. Moving away from Outlook and trying to utilize Gmail in a corporate environment is a pain that I have a hard time articulating. It just isn't the same and the ability to have mail in it's own window that I can easily open messages in, is miles better.

The average consumer? Probably living in a world of pain for all we know.

I'm not sure what stops some of these industries from essentially being more nationalist like China, but more centrist as a company like Palantir. If these risks are as big as you claim, a centralized authority should reverse engineer the things that work done in China or where-ever and use open source/build a better software stack that supplants what's out on the market currently.
