darksaga··on Verizon 4G LTE is down, nationwide outage confirmed
As a current 4G customer, I can say this has been the most frustrating 6 months. It's been well documented their LTE network has been sketchy from the start:

4G launched in Dec 7th 2010 and this article ran a week later about issues already showing up with handoffs between networks: http://bit.ly/td1XQT

Another article from April 29 2011 about an earlier 4G outage: http://bit.ly/v8zJUZ

I'm not surprised this happened and will be returning to 3G. Clearly their 4G is not ready for prime time yet.

darksaga··on Wordless: stop writing Wordpress themes like it's 1998.
Although I've built WP themes and have "dabbled" in Rails (building a blog like everyone else) and consider myself more of a front-end guy, this seems like overkill to me.

Not to mention most designers I know would look at this and roll their eyes.

darksaga··on Why are you using Google Plus for Blogging?
Alex brought up a great point, which he may have thought was a throw away line:

"Let’s leave the pithy comments for disposable social networking services like Google+, Facebook and Twitter."

This is exactly how I see and use G+. I use it to scan multiple stories and bylines, looking for interesting content and stories. I'm not looking for long winded blog entries. Those just slow me down.

I feel the people who are using G+ do so the same way they do with Twitter and other social media platforms. They can consume large quantities of content quickly - which does not mix with long, detailed blog entries. The two are simply incompatible in my view.

darksaga··on The PC is dead. Why no angry nerds?
I remember when a friend of mine got his first i-pad. We're both developers and he said he could do some basic editing with one of the included apps. First thing I thought was, "Oh yeah, I'm going to write code on a 7" screen as opposed to my 23" monitor."

The PC isn't dead and it won't be for a long time. Although there are a lot of lines being blurred between devices (tablets vs. smartphones vs. laptops), there's still a TON of people working at large corporations who you'll have to pry their PC's out of their cold, dead hands.

darksaga··on Groupon falls below $20/share
I think it's interesting Groupon is giving all these large tech companies a ton of leverage with their future deals.

I can just hear the Google people in their next pitch meeting to some great start-up, "You don't want to end up like Groupon do you?"

darksaga··on Why we’re working our young people too hard
Great points. Also, schools and colleges can't keep up with the changing technologies. One of my friends just graduated from a 4-year accredited design school and they just started teaching CSS 3 years ago. He said he wasted a lot of money and would've been better to just get a two-year degree and do the rest of the stuff on his own.

He said he learned more in his first 8 months out of college, than he did in the the 4 years it took him to earn his degree.

darksaga··on U.S federal investigators to collect private records of three Twitter users
Another great reason to protect your online identity. I don't use any of my real information on any of the social media sites I use simply for this reason.

Had these people taken better steps to conceal their identities, they wouldn't be in the jam they are now. Live and learn I guess.

darksaga··on Goldman's new money machine: warehouses
I find it curious the article never mentions the real culprit in hogging resources - China. When I was working in the bike industry, over the course of a few years, ALL of our bikes jumped in price considerably. After talking with one the reps from Specialized, they said China has put a huge strain on raw materials like Aluminum, Titanium, and Steel. By doing so, they've pushed the prices up across the board.

The stuff Goldman Sachs is doing pales in comparison to what China has been doing over the past 5-8 years.

darksaga··on Facebook: Are You Interfacing with the Russian Mafia & KGB? (2010)
Its always been scary to do business in that part of the world. I had a few buddies who were in telecom and were working there shortly after the fall of Communism. They used to tell stories of caring large sums of cash to pay bribes and keep the KGB at bay while they went about their work. They made it seem like this was just the way business was done.

It seems like it's getting more dangerous since these people have no problem killing influential and powerful people. Scary, very, very, scary.

darksaga··on What If We Paid Off The Debt? The Secret Government Report
The fallacy of the article is if we paid off the debt that we would never incur any debt in the future. Just not realistic to consider in any case.
darksaga··on Dropbox Said No To “Nine-Digit” Acquisition Offer From Steve Jobs
The major difference for me is Apple builds applications which work with its own products and not other platforms. Can I use icloud on my Linux box? Nope, but I can use Dropbox.

Granted, Dropbox comes with its own limitations, but when I'm looking for software, I want to make sure I'm not pigeon holing myself based on my OS.

darksaga··on Diaspora — Share the love.
You, I really had high hopes for this product. I signed up for the updates, waited patiently for my invite, and held out this could be a really good product. After several months of little or no updates or an invite, I lost track.

The one thing this project failed to do was capitalise on their new found popularity. Instead of seeing dollar signs, they should have holed up and did as many 24 hour hackfests as they could to get this puppy up in a few weeks - ready or not for prime time and tinker on it after that.

Instead, they ran out of money, their support has dried up, and their window to get this released, closed long ago. Not to mention, they've let a bunch more competitors into their space, namely Google.

darksaga··on How My Popular Site was Banned by Google
Another great example of Google randomly removing sites based on flimsy or nor evidence. The fact they don't give you a chance to plead their case is pretty scary.

My hunch is one of your competitors got the site taken down. I've had a few clients who had their competitors file complaints with Google, or inform them they were using black hat SEO to get on the first page of the SERPS. In one case they were successful, but I had the site back up in less than 24 hour,s so it wasn't a huge deal.

It sounds like it might be an ongoing issue and are not going to put your site back in the SERPS for a while. I feel for you brother.

darksaga··on Businessweek Magazine's Classy Tribute to Steve Jobs
Absolutely. This is one of those cases where you grab a young aspiring designer, and show them what an exceptional example of design and typeography looks like.

This is for sure a collectors item.

darksaga··on Enslaving your interns for evil and profit
I've signed them when asked and have only been brought into court once. The judge threw the case out in under 10 minutes.

On short, you can't keep someone being gainfully employed simply because you signed a non-compete clause.

darksaga··on Steve Jobs has passed away.
Wow - what a day. A tweet by CBSNEws says it was wrong when someone tweeted he had died, then I scramble for hours trying to figure out if it was real, and now it has been confirmed by Apple.

When I read the news, it really felt like he was hanging on until he knew his company was in good hands and he could pass on. Just an incredible human being in every aspect. He will be sorely missed.

darksaga··on Google’s Management Doesn’t Use Google+
Google+ was supposed to compete with Facebook and having people's salaries tied to something this big, you would expect EVERYBODY to be on board.

I'd be pretty pissed if my salary was tied up in this and articles like this come out basically saying, "Your own execs don't think this is a good enough product to use themselves."

Regardless of how private they want to be, they should be using the product or at the very least have some assistant or intern posting for them. I'm pretty certain most celebs and top tech execs don't do all of their updates. You don't have to post private stuff, just make an effort to show you're using the product.

darksaga··on Oracle Calls Out Autonomy CEO
I thought the fact the meeting took place on April 1st was entertaining. Maybe Hurd missed the joke?
darksaga··on "How much does a website cost?" – a survey of web designers
Building the site is just the start of the process in my eyes. I always give one estimate for the design/development/seo of a site. The importance of keeping the content, SEO and design fresh cannot be undersold to the client. Letting your site anguish for a few years will cost you visitors and business. And today, it happens even faster. A site that sits for more than 6 months is in danger of losing page rank.

For me, the cost isn't in the initial development, it's in the cost of maintaining the site (design/content) and continuing to rank well in the search engines for the life of the site (seo/sem). This also presents the best opportunity to create a long term relationship and an ongoing revenue stream for the developer.

darksaga··on It’s the end of the web as we know it
Despite the other comments, I completely agree with you.

It's just foolish to give up control of one of the most important communication resources your business has to a company with a notoriously poor customer service record.

darksaga··on All of life has been utterly, profoundly changed thanks to Facebook...
Interesting. I have a fake Facebook account, but I never like or recommend anything using any of the Facebook tools on every website these days. I've bee using the same account for years and all the information is completely inaccurate.

I'm wondering how much longer I can go before I get cut off.

darksaga··on Tech Jobs stays open for months, unemployment under 4%
I agree front-end guys don't get a lot of respect compared to the back-end guys. However, most of the back-end guys I know still think coding in tables is the way to go.

The thing you have to remember is supply and demand. Companies will pay you when supply is low, since they are in need of good talent. If you're a good negotiator - like myself, you can write your own ticket.

darksaga··on Samsung buying WebOS? I wish they would. It's great.
I remember seeing the Palm Pre 3 at the HP WebOS event and thinking it was going to be huge. A lot of people were comparing it the Droid Bionic at the time.

I think the OS has a lot of potential in the right hands - but I can't think of any company who would want it. HTC has already had great success in running Android on their handsets, and really has no need to spend a ton of money to get it tested and implemented on some future handset.

Maybe they'd pick it for a tablet line??

darksaga··on The Drupal Crisis
I agree and I believe if they simply picked a direction, be it a CMS or Framework, it would indeed trim out a lot of the fat from the core like you mentioned.

The fact they're trying to be all things to all people is what will likely cause the project to fail. Which is unfortunate, since I do like using it.

darksaga··on The Drupal Crisis
Typo3 is actually called Contao now and unless you can read German, the documentation is really really weak in English. Lots of documentation, but it's mostly in German. I've been looking at it and one of the main advantages is the ability to maintain multiple sites in one CMS, as opposed to having a CMS for each site you have. Also has the "live update" feature, so you can always have the most updated version with a single mouse click. Although this is $9 extra per month, it's one of their key features.
darksaga··on Researchers’ Typosquatting Stole 20 GB of E-Mail From Fortune 500
Yeah, it's still shocking to me how many fortune 500 companies still don't understand how vulnerable they are to simple hacks like this. I would've thought it would be SOP (standard operating procedure) to encrypt their email years ago.

I guess a normal level of paranoia hasn't quite reached those companies yet huh?

darksaga··on TechCrunch As We Know It May Be Over
There's always the option they expected this reaction and figured they would let him blow off the steam in a few articles and then move on.

In a few months, everybody is going to forget about this whole the episode anyway. Firing him or giving him more ammunition is exactly what they don't want to do.

darksaga··on Seriously, stop with the booth babes
I've had similar experiences with booth babes not knowing what the company products are, specs or anything remotely useful to me. One of the points which jumped out at me in the article was this:

"You assume immediately that any attractive female is there simply for their physical appearance, not for the value that their knowledge brings."

This only due to my experience in expecting the eye candy to be something beyond just eye candy. Once you've conditioned me to only expect them to be that - then I'm going to skip them and seek out someone who knows something beyond the glossy pictures and swag their handing out.

darksaga··on Apple Investigators Posed as Police in New Lost iPhone Prototype Search?
Anybody else feel like both of these stories (this one and the one from last year regarding the iphone 4) were planted? My BS meter is going off like crazy.
darksaga··on Apple Awards Tim Cook 1,000,000 Shares of Stock as CEO Bonus to Stay Until 2021
It was Inevitable the stock would dip a little when Jobs announced he was stepping down. Considering he's still going to be the driving the force of the company as chairman of the board pretty much tells you all you need to know.

Secondly, he wouldn't hand pick someone who didn't share his vision. Cook is smart, he's not going to drastically change the course of the company like some other cough HP cough companies have done.

Considering these two things, I'd say the stock prices will stay the same if not continue to increase in value.
