You can check out Halfmoon too instead of Bootstrap: https://www.gethalfmoon.com/
darkhorse13··on Pear AI founder: We made two big mistakes
>unless you have significant traction already, in which case you may as well go to any investor and they will fund you

This is the part that really bothers me unfortunately. I honestly grew up thinking that YC invested in people and ideas more than traction. If I had traction, I could raise money from anywhere. YC does invest in people without traction, but you have to be a certain type of person, from a certain background, and from certain institutions.

darkhorse13··on Pear AI founder: We made two big mistakes
I'm a solo founder and during the application process, I got 3-4 emails telling me to strongly consider finding a co-founder using https://www.ycombinator.com/cofounder-matching.

That's great, but just look at the profiles advertised on the front-page there: Harvard, Berkeley, MIT, etc. Nothing against them personally of course, but I really think this is the trend YC is going towards these days. It's the old school institutional prestige back, but this time it's blended together with SV startups.

I applied to YC in the last batch and got rejected. Not to sound like sour grapes, but it seems like YC loooves students from certain universities, which kinda sucks for us commoners who didn't go to these places.

Not to mention the whole hype around AI is unbearable at this point. Seems very likely that deserving products/ideas are getting rejected because they aren't doing AI, or because their founders didn't go to Stanford. Oh well, that's just how it goes.

darkhorse13··on Ask HN: What are you working on (September 2024)?
I've been building https://blocks.md, which lets you turn Markdown-like text into forms.
darkhorse13··on Show HN: Typeform alternative, turns Markdown to forms
I love spreadsheets, but wouldn't this expose all the other responses collected so far to the person filling out the form?
darkhorse13··on Show HN: Typeform alternative, turns Markdown to forms
Yeah that's a great idea.

Hey, really appreciate this user test. Like I mentioned in another comment, I would love to catch a chat with you if you're interested: tahmid(dot)hm(dot)dev(at)gmail.com. Thanks again for taking the time to make a video.

This was the easiest and quickest to start with. I don't know about MoRs' reputation in general, I saw Tailwind using Paddle so figured I would too. By the way, I applied to Lemon Squeezy as well, but their verification process made me wait 2 weeks and then asked for an Instagram account, which was crazy because this is such a techy nerdy product.
darkhorse13··on Show HN: Typeform alternative, turns Markdown to forms
Thank you, yes trying to figure out the best way to market this product. A self-hosted Typeform alternative is definitely an idea on that list.
darkhorse13··on Show HN: Typeform alternative, turns Markdown to forms
Definitely want to build a WordPress plugin ASAP.
darkhorse13··on Show HN: Typeform alternative, turns Markdown to forms
Great idea, I want to build comparison pages like that, challenging to do everything on my own, but trying to manage.

Would love to catch a chat with you about this if you don't mind. My email is tahmid(dot)hm(dot)dev(at)gmail.com.

I thought about the ____ syntax, but found it quite hard to fit in extra parameters in a nice way.
darkhorse13··on Show HN: Typeform alternative, turns Markdown to forms
Hmm I'm still trying to figure out pricing. The "Varies" Enterprise option is just there so people who are interested and I can have a proper chat because the product is so new. Definitely not a typical sales call, although I haven't done a good job to explain that.
darkhorse13··on Show HN: Typeform alternative, turns Markdown to forms
You can actually have more than one form field within the same slide. I haven't made that very obvious, but one of the advantages here compared to Typeform is the flexibility.
darkhorse13··on Show HN: Typeform alternative, turns Markdown to forms
Thank you!

1. Yeah I would say this was intentional. Typeforms are almost instantly recognizable, which is a good thing for a new product I think. I actually want to offer more than one form style though. If you look at the CSS file, everything is a variable so that I can add more styles/themes.

2. Haha you're right actually, the idea was slightly different and the name sort of stuck (it was originally blocksdb, which is worse). I don't mind blocks.md though, but marketing is definitely not my best skill.

So I did not want to open-source yet, which is why I picked BUSL-1.1, and from what I can tell, the other BUSL-1.1 I've looked at had this clause to open-source at a later date (AGPL3 is an open-source license after all).

I'm still trying to figure out the licensing around this whole thing, so this is temporary I believe.

Hey builder of this thing here. This blew up like crazy! Thanks for all of the feedback everyone. I'll try to reply to all of them, I think most of it is very valid. In case someone wants to reach out for questions, my email is tahmid(dot)hm(dot)dev(at)gmail.com.
darkhorse13··on Launch HN: Trellis (YC W24) – AI-powered workflows for unstructured data
Congrats on the launch. Serious question though, does YC only fund AI companies these days?
darkhorse13··on Show HN: Tegon: Open-source alternative to Jira, Linear
Completely disagree. Their website is fairly unique, and looks really nice and usable. It's a bit "standard" with the gray, but that's fine if that's their branding.
darkhorse13··on The danger of the mediocre success when testing startup hypotheses (2023)
My literal life goal is to have a software startup with moderate success WITHOUT VC funding. One that can sustain my lifestyle, but also keep me busy and happy without going completely overboard.
darkhorse13··on Meta Horizon OS
Literally nobody knows this though. Even searching for "Horizon OS" only returns Meta stuff already.
darkhorse13··on A framework to help B2B founders find product-market fit
What do you actually write?
darkhorse13··on Emad Mostaque resigned as CEO of Stability AI
He's not an Arab, he's ethnically Bangladeshi, and that's a common way to spell his name here.
darkhorse13··on What happens when an HTTP client raises $225M at a $5.6B valuation
As a fellow API practitioner and API enthusiast, I love listening to T-Pain as I'm shredding it on the front-end.
darkhorse13··on What happens when an HTTP client raises $225M at a $5.6B valuation
At this point, this is worse than parody.
darkhorse13··on Tailwind CSS marketing and misinformation engine
For me, Tailwind is great because it actually popularized utility classes. Sure, there were others that did it first, but the approach as a whole is widely accepted and seen as a productivity boost. I remember when this was thought of as a really bad idea when it's clearly not. Now I think I have written more CSS than a majority of the population[1], and for me, the most productive workflow is the following:

- Semantic class names for components like buttons, sidebars, etc.

- A wide range of utility classes to fill in the rest.

Utility classes (in my opinion) are absolutely the best way to handle different types of layouts, positioning, and spacing. Especially when it comes to overriding the component level ones from the semantic class names. This is not a novel approach by any means, I mean Bootstrap does it and it's still great.

darkhorse13··on Sora: Creating video from text
Does anyone else feel a sense of doom from these advancements? I'm definitely not a Luddite, I've been working professionally as a programmer for quite some time now, but I just can't shake this feeling. And this is not in the "I might lose my job to this" kind of feeling, that's obviously there, but it's something deeper, more sinister. I don't think I can explain it properly.

Anyway, videos look incredible. I genuinely can't believe my eyes.

darkhorse13··on Cousins are disappearing. Is this reshaping the experience of childhood?
I had a really rough time at school growing up, because I was a runt and got bullied pretty badly. My actual friends growing up were definitely my cousins, especially my brothers. The older ones always looked out for me, and I played outside all day with the ones close to my age. Seriously, if I did not have them in my life, I suspect I would be pretty fucked up as an adult. For me, blood has always been thicker than water.
