darkhorse13··on An engineer's brutally honest pitch for his Typeform alternative
Politely, I 100% disagree. If anything, a good dev team would be able to take Forms.md and integrate that into their AI workflow to generate powerful forms.
darkhorse13··on An engineer's brutally honest pitch for his Typeform alternative
They are fundamentally different products though, right?
darkhorse13··on Slow software for a burning world
No I totally hear you, I don't even practice what I preach because I have a subscription-based side-project: https://forms.md

I guess I would like to see someone make the Once model work to great success. I don't know how you would deal with updates and stuff, but that's what I meant. One "simple" solution is just charging the LTV (or something that's close to it) as the one-time price.

darkhorse13··on Slow software for a burning world
Slightly unrelated maybe, but I'm really hoping that the https://once.com model would take off. That would be the change I would want to see in the software world. It's more simpler to understand than governance, public interest, etc. Just pay once and own the software. I really don't think software is that deep or has many philosophical implications.
darkhorse13··on Presentation Slides with Markdown
Slidev is awesome. I'm working on something like this but for forms: https://forms.md
darkhorse13··on Most promoted and blocked domains on Kagi
That's the only party I can get behind!
darkhorse13··on Claude can now search the web
This is basically AGI because that's what we humans do.

I'm Tahmid, a full stack web engineer with a strong eye for product design and UI/UX. I've also built two open source projects that I want to showcase here. Both projects were a solo effort.

- Forms.md (https://forms.md): Open source TypeForm alternative (350 stars on GitHub), complex project built with JS/TS, fully-tested, lots of functionality. Just launched two weeks ago.

- Halfmoon (https://www.gethalfmoon.com): CSS framework (3k stars on GitHub), drop-in replacement for Bootstrap. 1.1M total downloads (from JSDelivr).

Recently I've worked a lot on RAGs and LLM wrappers, so I have quite a bit of experience with prompt engineering/AI stuff as well.

Looking for full-time/part-time/contract. I'm usually flexible about the type of work I do.

darkhorse13··on Ask HN: Can I really create a company around my open-source software?
That's amazing! Your project looks great. Could I reach out to you and ask a few questions?
darkhorse13··on Freelancing: How I found clients, part 1
If you don't mind, could you tell me about this recruiter?
darkhorse13··on Ask HN: Finding a Programming Tutor
Do you have a budget? I'm sure that would help narrow down the search for you.
darkhorse13··on Why Ruby on Rails still matters
Django is exactly that for Python.
darkhorse13··on Ask HN: Can I really create a company around my open-source software?
Thank you for the detailed comment, very insightful for me. Really happy that you're able to do this with Ory!
darkhorse13··on Ask HN: Can I really create a company around my open-source software?
Yep, here's an example: https://forms.md/#job-post
darkhorse13··on Ask HN: Can I really create a company around my open-source software?
Thank you for the numbers, that's very helpful.
darkhorse13··on Ask HN: Can I really create a company around my open-source software?
No honestly I appreciate the feedback. I've always worked as a dev, so that's all I really know, but I'm sure I can pick up some other skills and change my mindset. At the very least, I could find a cofounder.
darkhorse13··on Ask HN: Can I really create a company around my open-source software?
Fair enough
darkhorse13··on Ask HN: Can I really create a company around my open-source software?
Thanks a lot, I've sent you an email with a subject mentioning Forms.md.
darkhorse13··on Ask HN: Can I really create a company around my open-source software?
Thank you, this is definitely on the roadmap for me.
darkhorse13··on Ask HN: Can I really create a company around my open-source software?
You're right, there's definitely a mismatch in the product right now. These types of forms are generally made by non-devs, and non-devs can't really be expected to use an npm library to build forms.
darkhorse13··on Ask HN: Can I really create a company around my open-source software?
Thank you, and yep the name change made sense to me too.

> You'll know you're doing enough business things when you start to feel like you're letting the software slip

I needed to hear that.

darkhorse13··on Ask HN: Can I really create a company around my open-source software?
You know I 100% agree with your advice, but I can never follow it in practice. I just run head-first into development, driven by a nebulous vision that I can't properly explain. Forms.md is the peak of that experience for me haha.

Thanks for the comment and support though, again I 100% think this is solid advice, but I also believe it certainly does not apply to everyone/all products out there.

darkhorse13··on Ask HN: Can I really create a company around my open-source software?
Thanks for the feedback. Yep, definitely want to work on a form backend next. As mentioned in the original post, I built this on the side and it was a looot of work. Hopefully it will get easier from here.
darkhorse13··on Ask HN: Can I really create a company around my open-source software?
This was really useful, thank you so much. Reading Tally's story only strengthened my resolve.
darkhorse13··on Ask HN: Can I really create a company around my open-source software?
Really good resource, thank you.
darkhorse13··on Ask HN: Can I really create a company around my open-source software?
Thanks for the advice. And yes absolutely, my email is tahmid.hm.dev@gmail.com
darkhorse13··on Show HN: Open source Typeform alternative
Thank you! Let me know if you have any feedback, my email is on my profile.
darkhorse13··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (February 2025)
Hey I applied a few weeks back because I strongly felt I would be a good fit, but never got a response back. Does that mean that I was quietly rejected or do you reject candidates with an email rejection? I'm considering applying again because I feel my skills would be great fit here.

> just use TypeScript and a CSS-in-TS solution

THIS is the definition of a hack to me, so yeah.
