darkclarity··on Alaska Airlines to Buy Virgin America for $2.6B
As far as I know, Virgin is pretty much a franchised brand. Their trains are run by other transport companies, their cable TV is run by another telecoms operator, their banks are run by another institution etc.
darkclarity··on Silicon Valley’s ‘unicorns’ have regulators worried
If I ran a business (or invested in one) that was already successful and had a promising future then I wouldn't make it public. I can understand Uber and Airbnb staying private, less so for Snapchat.
darkclarity··on Google 'mic drop' Gmail joke for April Fools' day backfires
Bear in mind that the web based interface offered by email services is an email client, which you have no control over.
darkclarity··on Anxiety and Depression Are Symptoms, Not Diseases
The way I got out of those sorts of issues was by noticing that the medical system is inadequate. It is geared towards hiding symptoms with drugs - to get people back into work, even if those people are a mess inside.

It's all down to personal responsibility. You have to find the drive inside to constantly push. To forget the victim mentality that society encourages. To fix one problem at a time. To fight the hellish mode that your mind has enabled.

darkclarity··on Why Anti-Authoritarians Are Diagnosed as Mentally Ill (2012)
With a lack of religion, people naturally seek idols to look up to and create a focus in their lives. That said, it can go too far and look like a cult. The more I read about behaviour, history and psychology, the more I realise just how specialised religions were at keeping civilisations sane.
darkclarity··on Why Anti-Authoritarians Are Diagnosed as Mentally Ill (2012)
Life's so much easier when you are plugged into The Matrix. Now take your drugs and return to complacency. Ahem.
darkclarity··on PriceZombie is shutting down
A similar thing happened to me with Google Images. They were unintentionally a major source of my traffic. Some years ago Google changed their Images service so that it continued to take images from other websites but was very unlikely to send people to the source.

It surprised me how little fightback there was to this change. So, anyway, never rely on platforms like that, always assume it's a temporary arrangement (especially if the platform is run by a major player).

darkclarity··on OneDrive reduces free tier from 15GB to 5GB
Online storage is a physical object that requires dedicated infrastructure, whereas software can be built and forgotten about.
darkclarity··on Strong Link Found Between Dementia and Common Anticholinergic Drugs (2015)
Bit of a thinking-outside-the-box suggestion here, but have you tried something like mindfulness? Allergy, inflammation and stress seem to be linked in some way, so changing your mindset might reduce the response that you are blocking with loratadine. I personally (in a totally unscientific way) think that low level stress acts like an amplifier for these sorts of conditions.
darkclarity··on What Is the Best Way to Stop Internet Trolls?
Yep. It's a gentrification that has been chipping away at different aspects of the Internet for as long as I can remember. A struggle between the pioneers who have learned to live (and even flourish) within the chaos, and the rest of society who want the chaos eliminated.
darkclarity··on What Is the Best Way to Stop Internet Trolls?
I suspect a lot of the problems with trolling is inexperienced users not realising that the Internet is the technology equivalent of the wild west.

They sign up for services, post all their details and make the sort of off-hand comments that wouldn't be picked up in close circles, except they are using a global publishing platform (social media).

darkclarity··on Kraft Reveals Revamped Mac and Cheese, 50M Boxes Later
Cadbury's chocolate now reminds me of the stuff I used to find in cheap advent calendars and low end pick 'n' mix.
darkclarity··on Boaty McBoatface: What You Get When You Let the Internet Decide
It's absurd and mocks authority, which are staples in British (not just English) humour.
darkclarity··on Free Transactional Email Services – The Best Alternatives to Mandrill and Co
It's weird how 'the cloud' has put people into the mindset where email isn't just a complementary service that runs alongside the web server and just works. Nope. Sign up for a third party service and if you're serious pay for it.
darkclarity··on Why we should fear a cashless world
Similar for me, but I resisted using cards in real life from the beginning. I use them exclusively for internet transactions. I just don't like the idea of giving up a freedom of anonymity, yet I notice others are seemingly jumping at the chance.

I'm not sure what I would do if I lived in a city where electronic transactions are a requirement for public transport. I guess I would walk as much as possible... or even move to an alternative place.

darkclarity··on We only hire the trendiest
As the article suggests, I think it's just code. The recruiter is being subtle in case the employee overreacts and passes on the message to the candidate. Contractors are expensive, more experienced, less malleable and can give other employees ideas that there's an alternative.

Graduates and junior developers will burn themselves to hell and back trying to impress their employer because they don't know any better. That includes people who have never worked for a proper business (i.e. not a VC backed startup).

darkclarity··on Facebook is a growing and unstoppable digital graveyard
This is the primary reason why I deleted my Facebook account. I couldn't stand the thought of being run over some day and having no way of stopping the creation of a virtual memorial owned by Facebook's stakeholders. I'd be turning in my grave.
