dark_glass··on Trump says he has directed Treasury to stop minting new pennies
Congress does not mint coins, and this order does not coin new currency. They are separate concerns.
dark_glass··on Trump says he has directed Treasury to stop minting new pennies
>(a) The Secretary of the Treasury—(1) shall mint and issue coins described in section 5112 of this title in amounts the Secretary decides are necessary to meet the needs of the United States;

The secretary decides the amount necessary is 0.

dark_glass··on GitHub reveals how software engineers are purging federal databases
This could be seen as technical debt, inherited by the current administration. These changes should have never taken place.

dark_glass··on Tesla Paid Zero Federal Income Tax in 2024, Despite $2.3B in Income
Yes. Corporations are made of people, and they produce goods and services for other people. The people that compose that corporation pay the tax, or the people they sell to.

I live here, so I want it to be the best.

The $100B check is already cut, and they are currently building 10 new data centers in Texas.

People in the culture that they live in have a vested interest in it.

This was also said about slavery and the economy prospered post-slavery. The US economy is absolutely sustainable by paying citizens legal wages. In fact, it is unsustainable to encourage illegal labor and immigration.

This is the problem.

dark_glass··on Signal would 'walk' from UK if Online Safety Bill undermined encryption
Does a big strong man have more of a right to self defense than a little woman? A gun makes for effective self defense.
dark_glass··on Tesla Semi’s Enormous Battery Might Weigh 11,000 Pounds on Its Own
The Youtube channel Engineering Explained went over the Tesla Semi, and the weight of the EV cab should be pretty similar to an ICE cab. Also EV trucks are allowed another 2k pounds.

dark_glass··on Ask HN: Why do HN feel so negatively about Musk?
Good thing we have people developing technology towards terraforming, then.
dark_glass··on Removing SMS support from Signal Android (soon)
This change will have fewer people use Signal. One reason I was able to convince friends and family to start using it is because it is so seamless. I fear that with this change, Signal for most users will simply become unused, resulting in less e2e encrypted messaging overall.
dark_glass··on Struggling to learn a new language? Blame it on your stable brain
Your project looks amazing. I am in the same situation where I am learning Cantonese because my partner and her family speak it (actually Taishanese, but Cantonese is close enough).

Love the Yale romanization for your included Cantonese flash cards! Definitely going to check this out.

As for listening before speaking: It has been incredibly hard for me to pick out specific vocabulary with colloquial Cantonese in movies and other videos. Native speakers talk too quickly for me right now. I did watch a lot of French movies when learning French and that seemed to help more with comprehension later. I likely just need to spend more time with Cantonese since it is more different to my native tongue than French.

dark_glass··on California Mayors Join Campaign to Buy Out PG&E
Do you want a cabin in the woods, or a house? I think most people think very little amenities when thinking of a cabin in the woods, but maybe I am biased.
dark_glass··on Open Letter from Governments to Facebook Is an All-Out Attack on Encryption
Why not roll physical dice?
dark_glass··on Homomorphic encryption
I was guessing that the OP meant literally looking over your shoulder. If you fill out the ballot at home, it is feasible you could be coerced to vote a particular way.

I don't think this is currently happening, so I don't think it is a major issue.

dark_glass··on Homomorphic encryption
I don't think that is a major problem, unless I am misunderstanding. Oregon for instance is all vote by mail, outside the watchful eye of any government authority.

dark_glass··on Introducing Cloudflare’s IPFS Gateway
This seems very similar to Freenet. The only difference I see at a glance is that Cloudflare is running gateways so that everyone does not have to run a node.
dark_glass··on ‘Downloadable Gun’ Clears a Legal Obstacle, and Activists Are Alarmed
To be a firearm dealer you need an FFL license, but there are no federal laws against making your own firearm (as long as it is not restricted by the ATF, such as select fire, or destructive device or something). States may have their own laws against firearm manufacturing.
