daredevildave··on Phaser – A fast, fun and free open source HTML5 game framework
I would recommend PlayCanvas [http://playcanvas.com]. :-)

We have an editor tool (like Unity/Unreal), good documentation, a great community of other developers. And the engine is open source if you're not interested using the Editor tools [http://github.com/playcanvas/engine]

daredevildave··on Why NASA Switched from Unity to Blend4Web
It's a push to call the Unreal 4 support decent. Unity at least have it as part of their product feature set. Unreal seem to do it only as a demonstration piece.

The problem with taking a engine like Unity or Unreal and compiling to javascript is that 1) they end up with very large blobs of javascript (Unity is around 5MB of JS for the webplayer alone) 2) It is impossible to optimize, debug or inspect any of that code in the target setting. Neither of these engines have ever demonstrated code running on mobile browsers for good reasons, they can't.

Meanwhile, engines designed specifically for the web, for example, PlayCanvas [https://playcanvas.com] let you create content that works on every device, down to the likes of the iPhone 4S and comes in much smaller download sizes. e.g.

http://tanx.playcanvas.com (~1MB)

http://mmx.playcanvas.com (~3MB)

http://swooop.playcanvas.com (~10MB)

All of which work on mobile browsers. The future of Web 3D is not compilation of desktop game engines. It's engine's designed to be web (and mobile) first.

Ignore Unity webgl and try PlayCanvas instead? It's a lot more work to port, but you'll get much better performance.
daredevildave··on John Carmack working on Scheme as a VR scripting language
Oops, it's public now.

The texture, as provided, maps on the sphere primitive created in PlayCanvas. So no need to worry about texture co-ordinates.

daredevildave··on John Carmack working on Scheme as a VR scripting language
Yeah texture is applied to the outside of the sphere and the camera is in the middle so its all backwards...
daredevildave··on John Carmack working on Scheme as a VR scripting language
Pretty simple in PlayCanvas. It's a sphere with a camera in the centre. Texture is applied as an emmissive map on the material. Took me about 5 mins.

Project is here: https://playcanvas.com/project/349830/overview/office

daredevildave··on Why i’m done wearing a helmet
Some of this reasoning doesn't make much sense when making a personal decision.

"Helmet use may deter people from cycling", that doesn't affect whether or not you should wear one.

"Benefits of biking out way the risks", you don't lose the benefits if you cycle with a helmet.

daredevildave··on Raising Money in London Almost Killed Our Startup
Glad you guys made it through. Fund-raising is hard. Doing it across an ocean is even harder. It definitely feels like trying to raise in another country is a massive burden that may not be worth it.

daredevildave··on Superpowers – The extensible, collaborative HTML5 2D+3D game maker
Hi Elisee,

Great to see Superpowers making progress. I'm interested in your choice of Three.js. Did you consider other WebGL game engines? Like PlayCanvas[1] (where I'm a co-founder) which is also open-source[2] but more designed towards games than three?

Try PlayCanvas [http://github.com/playcanvas/engine]

It's definitely state of the art. See our latest tech demo: http://seemore.playcanvas.com

daredevildave··on Seemore: Physically Based Rendering in WebGL
Yep, this stuff looks great
daredevildave··on Unreal Engine 4.7 Released
Do they mention output file size?
daredevildave··on Physically Based Rendering Comes to WebGL
The Unity WebGL export is great news. It is pushing forward the platform.

However, the reality is that they are desktop only, at least for the foreseeable future. The Emscripten Webplayer generates a significant blob of Javascript which doesn't work well on mobile.

Raw Javascript engine's like PlayCanvas are ~500Kb compared to ~10MB for Unity in Javascript.

daredevildave··on CueBuddy – A Digital Cue Extension (3D Printed, + iOS App)
Cool. I can see we're entering an era of cheap niche hardware for all kinds of things.

Exciting times.

daredevildave··on Ask HN: what's the best WebGl 3D engine for creating games?
PlayCanvas is a great choice[0]. We're designed to do exactly what you want to do. Concentrate on the game not building the engine.

We support drag and drop importing from Blender and the Designer is great for building levels.

daredevildave··on PlayCanvas goes open source
Broadly speaking phaser is 2D, PlayCanvas is 3D. (Though you can always do 2D stuff in 3D)
daredevildave··on How I rebuilt "Flying Toasters" using only CSS animations
I loved this screensaver. A couple of years ago it was rebuilt in WebGL too: http://apps.playcanvas.com/will/arthacksf/toasters
daredevildave··on WebGL Water
If you just want to make a game, you may not want to bother learning WebGL directly. You can use an engine like PlayCanvas[1]* to build a game and you don't have to worry about the low-level stuff.

You might want to take a look at our company PlayCanvas[1]

We've got the game-building stuff covered, with Javascript engine and designer tools.

And a few of our users are pushing the multiplayer part of it e.g.

If you like Javascript and you'd like to start experimenting with 3D games, you should take a look at PlayCanvas[1]. WebGL-based online game tools. I think it's a little more complicated than Construct2 but you get to play with 3D graphics. :-)
