daoboy··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
I just finished this and had the same thoughts. As an anime fan since Akira and Ninja Scroll days, it was easy for that entire book to play out in my head as an anime. I had no idea so many of the tropes could be traced back to that book.

daoboy··on The Millennium Problems for Biology
This is all well outside my area of expertise, but my impression is that Michael Levin's work with bioelectricity is on the cusp of #6 Somatic limb regeneration.

SMEs please correct the record if I'm mistaken.

daoboy··on Alan's Random Insult Generator (1999)
The domain was purchased and redesigned. It still exists but lost something ineffable in the process.
daoboy··on Alan's Random Insult Generator (1999)
So glad to see this preserved.

It was sad to discover zombocom finally died an undignified death earlier this year.

daoboy··on The Internet Is Kind of a Predatory Cesspit Now
We're evolutionarily programmed to stop everything and focus on anything that elicits fear in our environment. Enormous amounts of money has been invested to design algorithms that capture our attention with fear because they need your attention to sell advertising. Everything's optimized to make you enraged and afraid because it works. They're really good at it too.

I know they got my number. I've had to delete every social media site I used to be engaged in (I suppose except this one) for the sake of my mental health.

daoboy··on Pixel 11 Pro Fold feels like the end of an era
I'm on my last Samsung for this reason. Just way too much bloatware, need to agree to a new privacy policy once a week, and every time it updates I find a few new apps on my phone I didn't want.

Gonna hold out for the Motorola/Graphene phone though. One of the models is supposed to be a flagship foldable.

daoboy··on What does the Riemann zeta function have to do with the distribution of primes?
This is one of the few places I ever engage on the internet, but I think it may be time for HN to be read-only, too.

This didn't seem especially controversial of a comment, and even here there's no end of the rotten attitudes for no good reason

daoboy··on What does the Riemann zeta function have to do with the distribution of primes?
Although the author turned out to be a fairly despicable person, Prime Obsession is an absolutely wonderful book on this subject.
daoboy··on What are locusts and what happened to them?
My earliest introduction to locusts was as a biblical plague. These Sunday school lessons did not include pictures. I always imagined some twisted diminutive demonic swarm of insects, and was disappointed to finally discover they were just grasshoppers.
daoboy··on It's time to talk about my writerdeck
That homebrew page is pure gold. Thank you for the suggestion!
daoboy··on It's time to talk about my writerdeck
That's very similar to the setup I'm working on, including the stand. Thanks for sharing!

One of the appealing features on the Note Max was the screen size (13.3"). How do you find working on such a small screen?

daoboy··on Time to talk about my writerdeck
I'm desperately awaiting the perfect eink device for this.

I've got a great writing setup on Obsidian that really works for me, a royal kludge mechanical keyboard...just waiting on the next gen of eink

The Boox One Note Max was sooo close, but they almost immediately discontinued the product and probably won't be supporting it long.

Suggestions are welcome

daoboy··on Removable batteries in smartphones will be mandatory in the EU starting in 2027

daoboy··on All phones sold in the EU to have replaceable batteries from 2027
I understood that the move to non-replaceable batteries was at least partially driven by water resistance

*Edit. Not sure why people are downvoting. I didn't make a positive declaration. HN didn't used to be this way for completely milquetoast comments.

daoboy··on What It's Like to Live with an Experimental Brain Implant
There are a handful of anecdotes like this one that make me very hopeful for the future. In spite of everything, humanity is still achieving wonders:

The device, implanted in July 2023, records from the brain region that controls muscles involved in talking and translates these signals into instructions for a voice synthesizer. Within 30 minutes of it being switched on, Harrell could communicate again. “I was absolutely overwhelmed with the thought of how this would impact my life and allow me to talk to my family and friends and better interact with my daughter,” he says. “It just was so overwhelming that I began to cry.”

daoboy··on The Grand Line
Agreed, I found this essay engaging and emotional. While I can see why the unusual style might not be someone's cup of tea, I don't agree at all with the criticism that this is bad writing. It had a Haruki Murakami ethereal feel that I am quite fond of.

Regarding other comments in this thread, the moral panic over AI writing has mostly passed me by. While I certainly have a philosophical preference for things written by an actual human, I don't care to invest the bandwidth in analyzing every single thing I read for hints of llm patterns. If I like it, I'll keep reading. If not, I won't. Sometimes discontinuing a piece of writing also aligns with obvious AI use, but that is generally a secondary issue.

daoboy··on Americans still opt for print books over digital or audio versions
Physical books are irreplaceable to me. I love the feel, the smell, and having a house full of them. Just went to a library sale this morning and got even more.

I also really need a break from screens, and reading a book is a great excuse to not be on my phone or watching tv.

daoboy··on Scientists invented a fake disease. AI told people it was real
It sounds like there wasn't really a counter narrative for the models to learn from. This feature of how llms accumulate information is already being gamed by seeding the internet with preferred narratives.

I'm not sure how many Medium articles, blog posts and reddit threads I need to put out before grok starts telling everyone my widget is the best one ever made, but it's a lot cheaper than advertising.

daoboy··on Creating West Coast Buddhism (2024)
The majority of my encounters with West Coast Buddhism have been... off-putting.

Particularly in the SF tech scene, there is an unfortunate 'competitive enlightenment' vibe amongst many of those who profess to follow Buddhist teachings. "Oh, you've only attained the second jhāna? I got through all four on my first try."

I am certain there are plenty of genuine and sincere practitioners out there, but my small sample has not included any.

daoboy··on The EU still wants to scan your private messages and photos
Thank you for what you're doing, this is an important fight.

The story is tragically illustrative of the maxim that you can oppose terrible legislation a hundred times but they only have to pass it once.

daoboy··on Immersive Dreams May Be the Key to Better Sleep Quality
Adjacent but not directly to the point of the article, does anyone remember their dreams or have success with lucid dreaming?

After about a year of trying I can remember at least some dreams most nights, but zero success with lucidity.

daoboy··on Science Fiction Is Dying. Long Live Post Sci-Fi?
Perhaps I'm getting the wrong impression, but it seems like this author is either ignorant of a lot of very successful contemporary scifi or is just taking a narrow view of the genre based on their own preferences.

AI and independent publishing certainly make it harder to sort the wheat from the chaff, but the ubiquity and convenience of aquiririg reading materials has never been better in all of human history.

I will never get caught up with all the scifi books I want to read, and nothing could make me happier.

daoboy··on AI could end online anonymity
"The researchers tested their framework on nearly 1,000 LinkedIn profiles to see if it could match them to accounts on Hacker News. These were profiles where the real-world identity was known to the team, who removed names, links, and other obvious identifiers from the bios.

The AI-powered framework successfully linked accounts with up to 67% accuracy at 90% precision, whereas the best non-AI methods struggled to succeed."

daoboy··on GrapheneOS – Break Free from Google and Apple
Many are complaining about banking app compatability, but I've never felt compelled to use anything other than my browser for banking. What's the big deal with the banking apps? Am missing out on some huge advantage here?
daoboy··on LibreOffice blasts Microsoft for putting "commercial interests" over everything
"Excel's default behavior is to convert certain text entries into dates. It makes sense for general spreadsheet use, but not for geneticists. Genes, like Membrane Associated Ring-CH-Type Finger 1, are given alphanumeric symbols (MARCH1) as a shorthand for their full, complex names. When a scientist would input "MARCH1" into an Excel spreadsheet, the software would automatically interpret this as a date and convert it to "1-Mar"[...]For a long time, Microsoft's position was that this was a niche issue affecting a small number of users"

To be fair, this really is a niche issue. For all that I agree with the frustration for Microsoft's terrible behavior in so many other respects, it's hard to fault them for not being immediately responsive to something like this.

daoboy··on Vitamin D and Omega-3 have a larger effect on depression than antidepressants
My physician prescribed Vitamins D and B12, so a quality Omega 3 is the only supplement I currently purchase.

After an absurd amount of trial and error with every over-the-counter, trendy supplement over the last couple of decades (and lord only knows how much money), these are the only ones that seem to make a subjective difference on my quality of life and an objective difference in my bloodwork.

daoboy··on Android’s desktop interface leaks
Many years ago I used to play around with CyanogenMod and Linux.

Life with work and a family became too busy to fuss with that stuff, but I'm rapidly approaching the point where abuse from android and Microsoft make using a less polished OS worth the bother.

daoboy··on FDA clears Caliway's trial of CBL-514 for localised fat reduction
This is different than the glps, directly targeting subcutaneous fat.

Link to an earlier paper on the treatment: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9384315/ "At a dose of 2.0 mg/cm2, CBL-514 safely and significantly reduced abdominal fat volume by 24.96%, making it a promising new treatment for routine, nonsurgical abdominal fat reduction in dermatologic clinics."

daoboy··on New mathematical framework reshapes debate over simulation hypothesis
I always feel like these frameworks rely on a semantic sleight of hand that sounds plausible on the surface, but when you drill down a bit they render words like 'simulation' 'reality' or 'truth' as either unintelligible or trite, depending on how you define them.
