It made me think that they were maybe taking advantage of the lower volume and lower stress environment and using behavior based analysis like the Israeli's (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/05/20/israels-risk-base...)
This problem is made worse by the lack of investment in training once hired, as some are discussing in these comments. Companies become even more reliant on the hiring process to produce the perfect candidate, and employed people are encouraged to stagnate their skills which dwindles the talent pool further.
Most companies, in my own personal experience, do fall over themselves to hire proven great candidates right now. Update your linkedin with some engineering accomplishments in in-demand fields like devops, cloud infrastructure, or machine learning, or at well known companies and watch the recruiters circle like sharks in heat.
#2 I agree is an issue. I wonder if with the current environment any independent would be allowed to gain traction, or would the competitors lock them out of services that users find mandatory (amazon shopping lists, google search, apple music, etc).
I'm under the impression that if it feels Amazon-only it's because of a failure of companies and devs to take advantage of the platform, not a failure of the platform itself. For example the Google services you're asking about, is that Amazon's fault or has Google not taken the time to develop that app because they're focusing on their own product?
I've used my echo dot most often with 3rd party services so far (daily briefing integrations, capital one, yahoo fantasy football).
Granted, many would say it's equally absurd to have so many members of the bottom of your engineering talent on one team, but I've seen it happen over and over again in real life.
I've been a part of situations like that. You can try and get ahead of it like TW is doing now where you create the second name ahead of time and try to build up the recognition and awareness around it in advance.
It's a full time job to do well, and your technical people's time is too valuable to have them half-assing it.
There's also some incentives out there right now where the lender pays the PMI for you.
My rent from 2013-2015 went up 35% and I eventually moved to a suburb. I tried to buy a place and even when I convinced myself to overpay would be beat out by a better all-cash offer within 24 hours of a place going on sale. It's nuts here right now.
3 years ago it was a great place to move in cheapish and be around a burgeoning scene, right now it's expensive as hell, and in 2 years will probably be back to being able to support that student/new grad/bootstrapping entrepreneur scene. We need more housing to come online, and it's being built, just not done yet.
Also, agree on the 2 interview max. Technically we do 3, but the first is a 3 minute basic screen by the recruiter, not really an interview.
We're hiring for just about all areas, too many for me to list individually. Check out http://www.quickenloanscareers.com/ and let me know if you'd like more info.
