danmur··on Using S3 as a Container Registry
I am responding to this part of the parent comment:

> I don't do a ton with Docker outside dev tooling, but I have never understood why private container registries even exist?

You know the options and have made a conscious choice:

> Yes I can host my packages and write tooling around it to make it easy. But JFrog already has all the tooling around it, and it integrates with current tooling. Why would I write the whole thing again?

So presumably you are not the kind of people I was talking about.

EDIT: I'm also assuming by the rent seeking part that the parent is referring to paid hosted services like ECR etc.

Companies send young engineers (and older engineers who should know more but don't) to AWS and Microsoft for "cloud certification". They learn how to operate cloud services because thats what benefits AWS and MS, so thats what their solutions use.

It's a difficult uphill battle to get people interested in how things work under the hood, which is what you need in order to know you can do things like easily host your own package repositories.

"Inspired by the simplicity of Homebrew and npm" had me until here :P
danmur··on Ruby: A great language for shell scripts
Nuitka has worked for me for everything Ive tried (in house dev tools). I didnt end up using it for work because I can rely on a pristine system Python with the right version so pex makes more sense.

There are other options I didnt look too much into, e.g. Beeware

danmur··on Ruby: A great language for shell scripts
Bundle it into a pex and distribute that. Its still way large but its easy to distribute.
danmur··on Ask HN: Who has had a successful PWA product?
That's how I learned it too.
danmur··on Desktop Linux is an Untapped Gold Mine
Heres a few:

* The UI is slow (compared to linux/gnome and osx).

* There are ads in it.

* There is a lot of unnecessary telemetry.

* Viruses, malware.

* No good first-party packaging solution.

* Real linux > WSL.

* I could go on.

danmur··on Ruby vs. Python comes down to the for loop (2021)
"Ruby is built for humans, Python is built for machines."

I'm sorry, that's just ridiculous. Perfectly in line with that load of blather from DHH though.

I like the scientific approach to research but its pretty obvious they werent trying to optimise anything for the user. Its like reading an interesting account of someone inventing a better version of a nerve gas.
danmur··on Tailscale SSH is now Generally Available
You don't have to use the service though! Can't afford it, don't use it. The price to get x service with the features you want is y no matter how you slice it by feature.
danmur··on Tailscale SSH is now Generally Available
I don't disagree, but I doubt anyone's going to use this website called the 'wall of shame' to get pricing info rather than look at the pricing page.

danmur··on Weird monitor bugs people sent me in the last 5 years (2022)
It might from your perspective. If you work in an office where everything looks the same except for the numbers above the doors that would be the situation.

I'm not being facetious, that's the monitor issue precisely (while also being completely not).

danmur··on Tailscale SSH is now Generally Available
I don't get what's wrong with charging more for SSO? They're in the business of making money, and if you need SSO and you need their service you're more likely to have money. It's nothing to do with the feature itself.

danmur··on Self-Hosted Is Awesome
100%. There are so many things that can go wrong, and you can't just leave it for a day or two. Best money I ever spent was on fastmail.
danmur··on Show HN: I open-sourced the in-memory PostgreSQL I built at work for E2E tests
Me either. It's a couple hundred lines of code to make a very comprehensive fixture using the real postgres, and it supports all extensions, including exotic ones you make yourself.
danmur··on Currying

danmur··on Uv saves Home Assistant 215 compute hours per month
I don't think this is anything like poetry. The dependency resolution doesnt seem to handle much variation in arch or Python version or other variables I at least have to deal with. I generally use poetry for dependency management (only runs in dev) then use pip or venv-update to install in prod from a generated requirements.txt.

uv looks like a good and fast replacement for pip or venv-update but those only take a fraction of a second to run (on a noop, my main use case) so I personally haven't seen where uv would fit in my workflow yet. Maybe building in containers from scratch each time, though again pip is performant enough for me when not doing the hard work of dependency resolution, and for some reason it's not cached.

I am not sure why dependency resolution outside of dev or build systems would be done. But maybe I have escaped the loop.
