Hey there, Dvorah U. Altemanstern here

danmg··on Windows 10 could start bullying people into using a Microsoft account to install
Okay yes. You can be in your 90s and opening up regedit or writing rust programs using async.

But for the majority of people at that stage of their life, who don't really care about the technology and haven't really followed it closely, it's a valid concern that random A/B testing and continuous version updates that change how you use programs are an alienating obstacle to using computers.

From the comments on this thread, a lot of people who do follow technology and who are used to being treating like this also hate it. It's not a stretch that, for less savvy users don't know what exactly it is they should hate will just assume it's computers that are at fault and choose a different tool.

danmg··on Tesla teardown finds electronics 6 years ahead of Toyota and VW
It's easy to get ahead when you're not concerned with lifing and having automotive grade components that will last 20 years.

on my vertical monitor it's still usable.
danmg··on Delphi's 25th Birthday
Wasn't this the idea behind WinForms and VS.NET? I even think some of the original Delphi people worked on it.
danmg··on 64 Core Threadripper 3990X CPU Review
I've been using my 64-core threadripper on ubuntu without a problem.
danmg··on How the cancel culture was leveraged against RMS
It wasn't cancel culture. It was RMS trying to play semantics-lawyer on a public email list about what exactly the meanings of 'abuse', 'assault' and 'pedophilia' are.

While he's made a career doing that for terms like 'freedom' and 'open source', that doesn't carry over well for things that have very narrow and precise legal meanings and which are crimes with real victims.

The amazon stuff was always easy to remove and didn't keep coming back. Also, nothing stops you from using a lighter-weight desktop, like lxde or i3wm, if that's your priority.

They're under no legal obligation to cancel the transaction if your post-purchase inspection turns up something. In almost every state, used cars are sold AS-IS. It's entirely a 'good will' policy and from this video it sounds like they won't give you money back, but instead allow you to swap with another vehicle in their inventory.

danmg··on The Seven-Year Auto Loan (2019)
Carvana doesn't allow per-purchase inspections. So that's a no go for me.

Sounds like unreported flood damage.

danmg··on Why Pascal Is Not My Favorite Programming Language (1981) [pdf]
well you also need another static block for the allocation bitmap or whatever structure you're going to use. How would the pointers that you're generated be aliased if they're unique according to your free map.
danmg··on Why Pascal Is Not My Favorite Programming Language (1981) [pdf]
Put the block in a struct and use allignment keywords.

Isn't this how malloc was done on classic MacOS?
danmg··on Why Pascal Is Not My Favorite Programming Language (1981) [pdf]
malloc: Have a big static block of uint8_t and return pointers from it.

exit: longjmp.

danmg··on Let's remove quaternions from every 3D engine (2018)
It has to do with metallurgy. Some people do use them, but most work is done with euler angles.
danmg··on Let's remove quaternions from every 3D engine (2018)
Those who don't understand quaternions are condemned to reinvent it, poorly.

I work in a research field that uses rotations heavily, and trying to use things like Euler angles (with 4 or 5 competing representations) and axis angles has created nothing but confusion among people. If people used quaternions from day one, it probably would have saved, cumulatively, the time of several dozen phds.

danmg··on Congrats! Web scraping is legal! (US precedent)
just put an option to download the raw csvs buried somewhere there. someone who is putting in the effort to bot scrapers will find that link, and save your server the load.

Maybe I would care about the plight of academic publishers if I got royalty checks for all the articles I've published over the past 20 years.
danmg··on One of biggest frauds in U.S. farm history
The real victims are the people paying higher prices for 'conventional' produce and grains because farmers are chasing higher prices and lower yields for organics. This includes most of the developing world.
danmg··on SoftICE
What modern debuggers/tool can do what SoftICE did? How do you debug services and device drivers modern Windows?
danmg··on A Sad Day for Rust
You can submit patches upstream all day long, but you can't browbeat the maintainer into applying them if they don't really care about it. It's their project at the end of the day.

Likewise, it's just as annoying when you submit a PR on some random thing because you see a legitimate bug or unhandled case and the maintainer starts demanding you do more free work for them to do 100% they way they would have done it. Just say "thank you", accept it, and make those superficial edits.

The price point here is free. This is essentially a gift economy. Just because some random strangers on the internet have an interest in the same few bits of code, doesn't mean there is an obligation to do free work or twist someone's arm.

danmg··on The Oregon DMV took in $11.5M last year by selling your information
This is happening in other states too. As soon as you title a new car, you start getting a ton more junk mail that's referring your make/model of car.
danmg··on The Polygons of Another World: IBM PC
The CGA pallet was 4 colours and there were four of them. You had to switch pallets manually. There were essentially two pallets with a 'brighter' version available.

If done correctly and with composite output, it looked passable. 99% of the time though people just used the default pallet with magenta and cyan on TTL display.

Some people use McDonalds instead of Starbucks, or fill in the blank indy coffee shop, as a third space. If this is truly mind blowing, you might need to get out more.
