danjaouen··on I’m bailing on San Francisco
Living outside of the Bay Area has consequences as well. For example, I'm an out-of-work developer currently living outside of SF, and I can therefore only really apply to positions that allow for remote work (which are much rarer than HN would have you believe).
danjaouen··on Ask HN: What is the difference between a junior and senior developer?
To me, the most important distinction between a "junior" and a "senior" developer is that a senior developer isn't afraid to work with and maintain legacy code.

When I first started out, I was obsessed with only using the latest and greatest technologies, but I've come to realize over the course of my career that this is simply infeasible for many organizations.

danjaouen··on Ask HN: Why use Python or similar?
I have to disagree with the last part of your post. Some languages are actually better in quantifiable ways; for example, shorter development time, better performance, etc.
danjaouen··on Zotonic - A High Performance Web Framework in Erlang
I've experimented with Chicago Boss a bit; it's an excellent framework, but I feel it still has a ways to go before it can compete with Rails.
danjaouen··on Zotonic - A High Performance Web Framework in Erlang
I would pay a lot for a Rails-like framework written in Erlang. Erlang really hits a sweet spot between performance and developer-friendliness.
danjaouen··on Move Silicon Valley: America needs a tech hub in a place where it’s welcome
If we have to move Silicon Valley somewhere, my vote would go to Rochester, NY: http://rocwiki.org/
danjaouen··on China’s bystander problem: Another death after crowd ignores woman in peril
While I don't doubt the veracity of this article, it is wildly presumptuous to characterize an entire nation based on one or two isolated, anecdotal incidents.

How would we feel if the rest of the world characterized Americans by the antics of single individuals, like Lindsay Lohan or Miley Cyrus?

danjaouen··on Python for Ruby Programmers (LA RubyConf 2013)
Technically, you can open up Python classes:

    class Test(object):
        pass

    t = Test()
    def test(self):
        print('ehlo')
    Test.test = test
    t.test()
This is rarely done in practice, however (at least, as far as I can tell)
danjaouen··on Brython - Python to Javascript translator
While this is an awesome effort, I don't see myself using this without list comprehensions/generators/itertools/etc.
danjaouen··on High blood pressure damages brain long before old age
Reading this article has significantly raised my blood pressure.
danjaouen··on Show HN: I built a dead simple, secure password manager.
Seems like this would result in many users using the same password for particular services.
danjaouen··on How to get on the front page of Hacker News (in 7 lines of Python)
Yeah, I know. As a Python guy with a minor case of OCD, I sometimes feel compelled to critique code, even when I know the code was written in jest.

Sorry for being a pedant :)

danjaouen··on How to get on the front page of Hacker News (in 7 lines of Python)
This is bad Python:

- "isgoodtime" is a magic variable that changes depending on when it is imported. It should therefore be either a function or method on an object.

- "if isgoodtime == True" should be "if isgoodtime:" (although this would probably change to "if isgoodtime():"

- words in functions should be separated by underscores, e.g., is_good_time, to_great_content

danjaouen··on Ubuntu Will Now Have Amazon Ads Pre-Installed
Why don't they just start charging for it? Personally, I'd much rather run software that costs money but is high quality than software that is free but riddled with adware.
