danielskogly··on Show HN: I made a site where students can create and share flashcards and notes
You still have GTM, Hotjar and Fullstory included by default, without opt-in and no way to opt out. This significantly reduces your trustworthiness for me, as well as my willingness to try out or recommend to others what looks like a pretty useful tool.

Consider if you really need all that analytics, and whether it's worth the invasiveness (edit: and GDPR breach, you being located in Germany). Page hits, sign ups, created flash cards and other usage is something you have available without any of those tools.

danielskogly··on Show HN: Screen – screen sharing for remote work, by the cofounder of Screenhero
This issue was my immediate though as well. I was expecting a dialog saying that a user was requesting control, asking if I would allow it. A simple toggle for allowing others to take control would perhaps work too.
danielskogly··on Eat This Much – Automatic Meal Planner
Hey! I really like this concept, and I could imagine myself as a paying user for a service like this.

Some feedback:

1. I can't see any information at all about the different membership plans. It says "Get started with a free account", but there's no information about what a free account includes and what other types there are.

2. You mention Google/Facebook remarketing in your privacy policy, which is a gigantic turn-off for me.

3. Regenerating a meal while hovering over a food item causes this bug to happen: https://send.firefox.com/download/476d36ae77d82097/#0LA0xL7u...

danielskogly··on Apple Sign In
Thank you for the reply! I think I've landed on implementing a local login strategy as well.
danielskogly··on Apple Sign In
As someone who also run a service where the only login option is using Facebook, I'm curious about how you regard the negative press regarding Facebook, the recommendations to leave Facebook, and the many users who is sceptic to or has already left Facebook.

Do you have any plans to adopt any other login provider? I would really like to, but other than email/password, I'm not really sure what would be a good alternative, and I'd really like not having any personal information stored at all - email addresses included.

danielskogly··on New Parents Complain Amazon Baby-Registry Ads Are Deceptive
I agree. Many of my friends and family don't have FB either, and have their varying reasons for not wanting it.
danielskogly··on New Parents Complain Amazon Baby-Registry Ads Are Deceptive
I definitively recognize this, which is the reason for the "Why Facebook?"-explainer on the site. It alienates a lot of users, especially in the HN-crowd, and I'm hoping to do something with it at some point.
danielskogly··on New Parents Complain Amazon Baby-Registry Ads Are Deceptive
Since yesterday, it's possible to view the items in someone's list without logging in. If you open your own wishlist in incognito mode you can see how this looks like :)
danielskogly··on New Parents Complain Amazon Baby-Registry Ads Are Deceptive
I run exactly 0 analytics and ads on Wishy.gift, nor do I plan to ever do so. Almost 300 users are using the service so far, and I have no idea who most of them are, where they come from, or how they found the service. There's a huge uptick in the number of registrations now before Christmas, but I'm really hoping that people might find it useful for birthdays, weddings and baby registries as well.

All feedback is very welcome :)

You can browse with reddit compact by simply adding .compact to the end of a URL. It's not the most beautiful thing in the world, but it's functional and really fast. Eg. https://www.reddit.com/.compact
danielskogly··on MIT Researchers Have Developed a ‘System for Dream Control’
I still remember being scared awake by that audio loop many years ago. Lucid dreaming had caught my attention for a while, and when they released the lucid dreaming feature I thought I'd give it a go. The media volume on my phone being set to maximum definitively did not help when that creepy voice wrought me out of sleep and I haven't tried it since. I wonder if it actually works, but can't really try it out nowadays as I'm not sleeping alone.
danielskogly··on Ask HN: What percentage of your users are using social login?
Facebook login is all we have on Wishy.gift, which considering I really care about privacy, might seem weird.

We use the login to auth, seed display name, and for the unique Facebook ID that we only store hashed. There's no analytics of any kind on the site, and except for the display name (which I'm planning on making editable) there's nothing to identify a user if somebody gets access to the database.

One of the things we want to achieve with the service, is to make it hard or very inconvenient to peek at what's been checked off in your own wishlist, and therefore we only use 1 service for login.

It was and still is a really difficult compromise between simplicity, the functionality of the service, and the privacy of our users - which includes my entire family, SO, SO's family, several friends, and many others.

Having reached 200+ users as well, I'm not really sure how we'd go about replacing it with something else as well.

danielskogly··on How to get your first 100k active users
The dependency on Facebook is kind of unfortunate, as it excludes those who either don't have a Facebook account, or for various reasons do not want to use it to sign up for services. I am myself in the latter category, but went with it as I wanted a single login, and saw it as the best alternative at the time - got some more about that in the 'why Facebook?' section on the site.

Would really like to provide a solution that could work without login, but I'm kinda clueless on how to solve this in a good way, that allows for the creator not knowing what has been checked off or not, as well as allowing others to both check and later - perhaps even on another device - uncheck items :/

danielskogly··on How to get your first 100k active users
How strange! These are autoplaying, muted videos, which has worked on every platform and browser I've tried so far. What OS and which version of chromium are you on?
danielskogly··on How to get your first 100k active users
Wow, thank you! Good luck with your own project too!
danielskogly··on How to get your first 100k active users
Thank you for those awesome words!

A demo wishlist is a great idea, perhaps with the ability to switch between how the creator sees the list and how others do?

Really appreciate the suggestion, will be adding this!

It's been like that for a whole year without anyone noticing - or at least without anyone telling us. Thank you for doing so!

Fixed in next build :)

That's the one! Any feedback and suggestions are appreciated!
danielskogly··on How to get your first 100k active users
We aren't doing this, and we definitively should! I've added this to the todo-list, and will work towards having manually curated lists up first, and try to make it a bit more automatic when we have a bigger user mass. Can't give you a specific date for implementing this, as Wishy.gift is both a sideproject and - at least for now - very seasonal (36 of the 53 new users since March signed up in November/December), but I'm hoping to have this up for August/September :)

To be honest, I wish I had this two weeks ago when I was making my own wishlist!

Thank you for taking the time to suggest a feature!

danielskogly··on How to get your first 100k active users
Very true! :) Thank you, and likewise - pretty sure there's more than 100k information-hungry parents out there, so wouldn't be surprised to see the "100k to 500k"-post in the not too distant future!
danielskogly··on How to get your first 100k active users
This evening we got our 171st user for our wishlist-service. When we launched it 1 year ago we tried to get it out on different channels like Reddit and HN without much success, while we _did_ see success in just talking about it to friends and family, and had just over 100 users in January this year.

Since then, we've done close to zero marketing, and it's been amazing to see new signups, wishlists and items being created - seemingly out of the blue. I made a simple Slack-bot to post those events to a channel with their ID, and these are the stats from it was added late March until now: 53 new users, 74 new wishlists, and 482 new items.

As we do no sort of analytics, we have no clue who these people are, but boy does it make me happy to see those "A new user was just created!"-messages nonetheless!

Saw that now, not sure why I missed it!

Good that you learned a lot - didn't know people still used KnockoutJS, but looks like you did well on this one.

Btw, another thing I noticed is that clicking the expand comments button a second time does another request to fetch the comments - might want to check client side if it's already fetched first, and also make sure that the requests are cacheable. Looks like there's some `no-cache` headers set. (btw2, I was in fact expecting it to toggle the comments, ie. close them, but that's another thing)

Also, it seems like you manage to rewrite the normal amazon links in comment bodies to add your affiliate code, but the smile.amazon.com-links remain unchanged. Not sure if this is intended or not, but might be worth checking out.

Thanks for the tip! Saw that post when it was on HN originally, also pretty cool :)

danielskogly··on Show HN: SnooBooks – Dive Deep into Reddit's Favorite Books
This looks pretty interesting! Would really like a way to filter based on genres, as there seems to be an overwhelming amount of comics that I'm not interested in at all.

Another neat feature would be to see top books of all time and for a specific year, instead of only specific months.

Looks a very tiny bit weird that when going to the next page from the first page, the "Previous" button shows up before the content has loaded.

Lastly, it might be a good idea to keep track of which comment sections have been expanded, either in sessionStorage or as a query parameter. I misclicked somewhere, and when I hit the back-button, the scroll position was off because I had earlier expanded a comment section.

danielskogly··on Get started making music
The Song Exploder podcast is awesome for both approaches, and I would really recommend anyone interested in writing and/or producing music to give it a go.

"A podcast where musicians take apart their songs, and piece by piece, tell the story of how they were made." @ http://songexploder.net/

It's a cool video, but not really a very basic piece of equipment.

danielskogly··on Show HN: KITR – a customizable UI kit that exports your components to code
Hey! OP here. We are creating KITR because we are tired of writing the same UI components time and again for different projects with minute variations.

Our intention is to create a library of solid and modern UI components that you can customize before exporting and including them in your projects.

While we at the moment support export to HTML and CSS, we plan to support exporting the CSS to SCSS, and the HTML - and potential JS - to react/angular/vue components. Which components would you like to see?

danielskogly··on Ask HN: What is your side project for 2017?
https://wishy.gift/ - a wishlist web app that we launched a bit too close to Christmas to be of use to anyone. We got just about 90 users at the moment, and have gotten lots of good feedback and feature requests.

Friends and family I've talked to found it really useful for the Christmas shopping, and my SO showed me the wishlist of a friend of hers - which had loads of items added to it - and almost every single item was checked off.

There's some stuff we're going to add, but our main issue is finding out how to market it, and explain the service in a good way.
