danielskogly··on An ode to that “coffee friend”
I run a wishlisting service, and I find creating my own wishlist for Christmas/birthday is the hardest thing about it, as I have to work pretty hard to actually figure out things to wish for.

Considering how hard I find this myself, how hard isn't it for someone else to know what I would like to receive if I didn't tell them? A close few manage this anyway, as they might keep notes of things I mention during the year, or know me well enough to know what I will appreciate, but for other family and friends, I honestly think it's too much to expect.

The solution for me is to wish for things I know I'll appreciate like "∞ of experiences with you", "∞ of home-made stuff", and specific items in various price-ranges that I want and can post-pone buying myself, like "Physical copy of this book", "This specific game (on GOG)", and "This somewhat expensive clothing item". The more things I can wish for, the more options friends and family have, the less it feels like I'm ordering stuff, and the less I know what exactly I can expect under the tree.

TL;DR: Giving good gifts is hard, and putting some thought into a wishlist can make it better for both parties. YMMV.

danielskogly··on The Nobel Peace Prize 2022
dang posted this[0] on the thread of last year's winner:

> All: please don't post if you have a reflexive-indignant reaction rather than a curious one. This site is for the latter, not the former, and the former tends to drown out the latter.

> I'm not saying you owe Nobel Prize committees better, but you owe this community better if you're participating in it.

danielskogly··on Storing State in the URL
> Deeper nesting is not typically used. It would be very nontrivial to deserialize such URL parameters back into the object.

Did you mean to write “very trivial” here? This is the same formatting as used when submitting forms with array and/or dictionary data, and further nesting commonly adds further brackets `like[foo][bar]=baz`. IME the querystring [0] package is great for this.

danielskogly··on Things I don’t want to do to grow my side project
I’d be curious to hear what kind of issues you’ve been having, as I’ve quite recently opted for Stripe over Paddle for the SaaS I’m working on (instorier.com). This Twitter thread [0] from some months ago finally tipped me over to Stripe, but considering we haven’t fully launched yet, I’m eager to know more.

danielskogly··on Temporary issues accessing Proton services
Also experiencing this, ProtonStatus[0] is reporting "Some systems are experiencing issues", although all circles are green.

Loading / sending e-mail only yields an orange banner saying "Servers are unreachable. Please try again in a few minutes"

Edit: Mobile Apps, Bridge and Web Application is now reporting performance issues

danielskogly··on Norwegian developer job board for Ukrainian refugees
I find kode24 practically unreadable without uBlock origin. Loading the frontpage, there are 45 items being hidden, and this is just by the cosmetic filters. In addition there are the third party analytics/ad scripts.

Btw, as far as I can tell, you're neither GDPR compliant, nor compliant with ekomloven[0], as you're not mentioning "Cookies" or "Informasjonskapsler" anywhere readily available.

All that being said - great initiative :)

danielskogly··on Some discouraging anecdotes on how services handle account deletions
Heroku keeps 7 days of automatic backups, and to the best of my knowledge they are deleted after this.
danielskogly··on Some discouraging anecdotes on how services handle account deletions
When a user requests deletion from my wishlist service, I fully delete everything, not only to be GDPR-compliant, but because it's the right thing to do. This includes:

- Their account changes and passports

- Their own wishlists, including all items added

- Any claims they've made on other wishlists

- Any item suggestions they've added to other wishlists

- The checked status of any item suggestions they've checked on other wishlists

- Removing them as partners on collaborative wishlists created by others

- The user

I'm not sure why someone would _want_ to keep user data around, as that seems more of a liability than an asset.

danielskogly··on Ask HN: What is your “I don't care if this succeeds” project?
I created a privacy-friendly wishlist service (https://wishy.gift/) for my SO, and as long as she and my family uses it, it's a success for me. Going from ~1k to ~5k users during 2021 was a lot of fun, but it's the close circle that really counts :)

danielskogly··on Positive Covid-19 antigen tests with Norwegian blood samples from 2019

danielskogly··on Positive Covid-19 antigen tests with Norwegian blood samples from 2019
You're correct that the article doesn't mention antigen tests, ~~but the actual study[0] does~~:

Edit: Apparantly the described test[1] is indeed for antibodies. See child comment by projektfu.

> Summary:

> We studied SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence among pregnant women in Norway by including all women who were first trimester pregnant (n=6520), each month from December 2019 through December 2020, in the catchment region of Norway’s second largest hospital. We used sera that had been frozen stored after compulsory testing for syphilis antibodies in antenatal care. The sera were analyzed with the Elecsys® Anti-SARS-CoV-2 immunoassay (Roche Diagnostics, Cobas e801). This immunoassay detects IgG/IgM against SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid antigen.

danielskogly··on Issues with Cloudflare Images
Thank you for bringing this to my attention, I wasn't aware that was even a thing :)

It's not in "dark mode" though, it's simply a dark theme, and those have been around since forever. I'll look around for a theme that supports both when I get the time, but until then I echo the suggestion of a sibling comment to use the reader mode.

danielskogly··on Issues with Cloudflare Images
That's really great to hear, thank you for letting us know!
danielskogly··on Issues with Cloudflare Images
Cloudflare is industry leading when it comes to facing those kinds of attacks, though, and it's supported in the "Cloudflare Image Resizing" [0] product.

Also, using a fixed number of sizes might be best practice when it comes to a website you have full control over, and can plan the content for. When it comes to user-generated content, where you want to give the user the opportunity to select a custom crop for an image, you don't necessarily have that kind of control.

The alternative we considered was doing the crop on the client before uploading the image, but that ensures loss of information, and makes it impossible for the user to edit their selection at a future time without re-uploading the image.

danielskogly··on Show HN: Wishy.gift – A privacy-first wishlist service
Thank you, I’m glad to hear that! With privacy-first I mean that I don’t collect any data other than what’s needed for the service to function, as well as keeping the site completely free from any ads or tracking scripts :)
danielskogly··on Show HN: Wishy.gift – A privacy-first wishlist service
Hi HN! I’m the creator of Wishy.gift, which is a very simple and privacy-friendly wishlist service. You can create wishlists, and invite friends and family by giving them the unique URL generated for each list. They can then check off what they want to give, which will be visible to other participants, and not you.

I store all email addresses hashed with a fixed salt and SHA512, which isn’t encryption, but makes it more difficult for any attacker or unlikely future buyer of the service to use the addresses directly.

The only revenue is generated through affiliate links, and all tracking options provided to me have been disabled.

danielskogly··on Alexa leaks private wishlists
I'd guess that for many, the point is that it's not simply a list of things they want or need to buy for themselves, but a list they can send to others. In this case, though, a todo-list might have been a better choice, although I myself also keep ideas for others in the wishlist service I use.
danielskogly··on Alexa leaks private wishlists
I run a simple, free and privacy-friendly wishlist service[0] with zero ads and tracking that's been around for a couple of years now, and I don't even keep your e-mail address in plaintext[1]. It's been exciting to see the user count go from ~500 to ~2500 the last year. Any feedback and feature requests are much appreciated :)

danielskogly··on An app called Libby and the big business of library e-books
I fully agree! The libraries of Oslo use Libby for digital non-Norwegian audiobooks, e-books and comics, and the user experience is light years ahead of the one they use for Norwegian content.

I initially didn’t know about the web interface, and was pleasantly surprised to find it has feature parity with the app.

danielskogly··on Tell HN: Coming soon – “Meet the Batch” threads for parallel Launch HNs
As dang mentions in the post, the YC founders themselves aren't necessarily the best suited to edit these kinds of posts, which is why they're taking so long to process.

That being said, I agree that attempting to scale/crowdsource the editing might be a very good idea, and will at the very least (hopefully) reduce the amount of work needed by dang.
