danielhooper··on Apple Drops Hints About Working on Self-Driving Cars
Why play the role of BMW and manufacture vehicles when you can play Mastercard and collect 0.5% of every penny spent on ubers/lyft when asking Siri for directions and confirming with Apply Pay and Touch ID.

If anything, Apple is gearing themselves up to profit off the movement of people and not the vehicles themselves. Seems like a better strategy if you ask me, but I'm not a strategist of any sort...

danielhooper··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (December 2016)
Location: Toronto, Canada

Remote: No

Willing to relocate: Yes

Technologies: Swift, Objective-C, Cocoa Touch, Git, HTML/CSS

Resume/CV: https://danielhhooper.github.io

Email: danielhhooper@gmail.com

Resume is just a visual portfolio of apps because I don't have any professional experience, but you can email me to ask about what I was doing before if you'd like.

I am mostly looking for a good team to learn from and grow with. The stack doesn't matter but I am enthusiastic about Swift.

danielhooper··on I am an investor in The Style Club. Or, at least, I thought I was
I noticed the author didn't really expand on that either, but I really don't think Mr. Cuban would be happy finding out someone he has invested in has previous history of defrauding investors. Not to mention how little investigation was required to find that out.

You're right this doesn't really affect the tv show, people who work for the show, and the cable network. Absolutely nobody cares if the companies are "fake."

danielhooper··on Show HN: LaptopHits.com – see what laptops people are talking about online
I think the UI and design is absolutely superb.
danielhooper··on A Week with the New Macbook Pro with Touch Pad
Why is this downvoted? "Touch pad" is the perfect mix of ambiguity between track pad and touch bar. It's a pretty careless mistake to write a blog post about a piece of tech and not even get the name of the tech right...
danielhooper··on Katana – Modern Swift framework for creating iOS apps, inspired by React/Redux
I couldn't fix a lot of UI problems because when trying to trace what was happening through this system of actions and states I could only find when these bugs occurred when stepping between lines of machine code.

I can't offer a fair point of view because I don't think the project I was working on made proper use of ReSwift. It was very difficult to follow the flow of data and understand why certain things wouldn't work.

danielhooper··on Katana – Modern Swift framework for creating iOS apps, inspired by React/Redux
I recently worked on an app that adopted a similar framework (ReSwift) and I hated it for the same reasons you are skeptical. It was needlessly complex, horrible to try and debug, and was incompatible with the "status-quo" of standard app development practices.

At the end of the day it was just a bad replacement for Core Data / Realm / whatever.

I wish I could tell you more but like yourself I really had absolutely no idea what the point was or what it was supposed to make easier.

danielhooper··on Visual Studio for Mac
> because they're using terabytes of samples in each project.

This is beyond hyperbole.

danielhooper··on On Wall Street, a high-ranking few still avoid email
I'm curious what kind of obvious examples you might have in mind for someone who never took any business classes.
danielhooper··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (November 2016)
Every month this company posts here for the same positions and there is always a chain of comments underneath about how they don't respond. I don't think they're actually trying to hire anyone lol.
danielhooper··on October Special Event Keynote [video]
Am I the only one who finds it laughable that Apple thinks anybody wants to purchase or rent movies and tv shows through iTunes? The service is awful and the pricing even worse.

edit: tv shows, not tvs. lol

danielhooper··on Show HN: My side project iOS game just hit #3 in the Finnish App Store
Pretty neat game. I commend you for not integrating ads or IAP. I went the same route with my iOS game.
danielhooper··on Modern Software Over-Engineering Mistakes
I also believe it to be an attempt to avoid refactoring by trying to get things "right" the first time.
danielhooper··on Human age limit claim sparks debate
This will just turn into a silly argument over semantics. It's not as if a natural death is just suddenly passing from old age. You succumb to some kind of disease that destroys a critical part of your body. Modern medicine does a lot when it comes to preventing and curing diseases, so I'm not sure where your argument that medicine hasn't attempted to extend our lives comes from.
danielhooper··on Human age limit claim sparks debate
Working out regularly would certainly make your "health state" better than average.
danielhooper··on Ask HN: Which language(s) should I learn to do one-man projects and earn money?
You will not find good answers to poor questions. You must first decide to build a house, then pick up the hammer.

Build me an iPhone app, written in Swift, that will let me sell my recycling (cans, bottles) to someone else so I don't have to drive to the recycling centre to collect the refund.

If you research your market, your audience, and verify your idea through testing and prototyping, you can get your business started without ever writing a line of code.

danielhooper··on Why I’m giving my company Election Day off
I have a hunch that a weekend election could really hurt voter turnout of low income individuals.
danielhooper··on Yes, Apple’s ‘Headphone Jack-Free’ iPhone 7 Is a Design (and Branding) Mistake
This is a move towards wireless, not lightening. We'll relive this controversy in a few years when the iPhone gets rid of the lightning port to go completely wireless.
danielhooper··on VotePlz – The Easiest Way to Vote
But how does this affect the voting population? Wouldn't you just elect the most popular person anyway, thus making the no votes worthless?
danielhooper··on VotePlz – The Easiest Way to Vote
No vote is an option we've always had, it's just not voting, and we've been dealing with the nasty ramifications of the majority population "no voting" every election season (see: https://ballotpedia.org/List_of_current_members_of_the_U.S._...).
danielhooper··on The End of Headphone Jacks, the Rise of DRM
Sounds unlikely seeings as they already have Apple music as an exclusive distribution channel to Apple customers.
danielhooper··on There Are No Truffles in Truffle Oil (2014)
The truffle oil you buy from the grocer has a deserving reputation, it's just scented oil, but I've eaten in restaurants where their truffle oil was literally sliced black truffles in olive oil, so at least on a restaurant menu you shouldn't dismiss "truffle oil" immediately.
danielhooper··on Teens Who Say No to Social Media
> The great failing of social media is that it doesn't help you make friends. Its very much for Mrs Bucket

Hmm. You'd be surprised...

danielhooper··on Google shelves plan for phone with interchangeable parts
> It was once a given that you could build your own device from scratch and change out any part you wanted to. You could keep systems usable for 10+ years this way and we got a generation of hardware hackers and enthusiasts who went on to make cool things.

The only thing we've been able to customize to the level of extent you're talking about is desktop PCs and they have't gone away.

The chances of you being able to replace your phone's battery or upgrade your laptop's RAM yourself has gone down but there is still a ton of demand for build your own PCs met with a supply of ever-improving products.

danielhooper··on Ask HN: Early signs that a company is failing?
> (b) hire less qualified developers for roles that do not require deep technical knowledge

Therefore making them perfectly qualified for the job you are giving them?

danielhooper··on Amazon is piloting teams with a 30-hour workweek
Doing what?
danielhooper··on Do nice guys come second?
Out of curiosity, why do you call yourself a nice guy developer? What and who are the bad guy developers?
danielhooper··on Skully has crashed and burned
What about all the tens of thousands of students that graduate with CS or related degrees every year?
danielhooper··on Ask HN: What are you working on?
I am working on a social app for meeting people over coffee/tea. I am aiming to simplify the process of setting up initial meetings, whether it is to chat with a developer at a company you're applying to, seek advice from a seasoned entrepreneur, or just find someone to jam on synthesizers with.

The core concept is that you are incentivized into meeting people because as part of your profile other people will know what your favourite local coffee shop/bakery/cafe/whatever is and what you like from there so they will know what to buy you. You basically get to name your own price for a short conversation, or on the flip side, cheaply buy time from people whom you would otherwise not know where to find.

Haven't been writing any code I can't easily reuse for other ideas because I'm barely starting to validate the idea, but hopefully I can generate some interest in it as I think there are simple paths to monetization.

danielhooper··on As sewbots threaten Asia's sweatshops, we need to decide who will benefit
To appreciate the aside you have to be a creepy guy.
