danielecook··on The struggle of resizing windows on macOS Tahoe
I laughed at the animation quite hard - it’s the perfect analogy for the issue at hand!
danielecook··on Peep Show is the most realistic portrayal of evil I have seen (2020)
I place it in the category of “cringe humor,” and by that standard it’s more cringey than Seinfeld and curb - especially because of the first person shots. It is a great show! Well worth a watch.
danielecook··on Math Academy pulled me out of the Valley of Despair
I’m doing math academy and I have two comments. First, the value of this site comes from its content which is very thorough. I think it’s a great way to learn math.

Second - I love the website. It reminds me of what I think of as the golden age of web design where sites were mostly server side rendered with a little jquery / Ajax sprinkled in, and more information density was preferred.

danielecook··on Apple unveils 'Passwords' manager app at WWDC 2024
I’m concerned about how secure this will be. What happens, for example, if you experience a sim swap attack?

How will apple protect all of your password data in this case?

Will the setup allow for an additional password to prevent hackers from gaining access?

danielecook··on Apollo 8 astronaut William Anders ID'd in WA plane crash
I’m confused. Does this math check out?

Circumference is 24,901 - so about 1000 mph at equator.

1000 mph / 3600 s / h = 0.27 mps

0.27 * (1/250) = 0.001 miles?

Doing this math on my phone but am I missing something here?

danielecook··on Show HN: HackerNews but for research papers
I made something similar a few years ago (https://github.com/danielecook/upvote.pub) and it even hit the front of HN...but couldn't get enough traction. I hope yours sees more success.
danielecook··on RollerCoaster Tycoon at 25: 'It's mind-blowing how it inspired me'
Loved this game as a kid. I played the traditional way, but I also had a lot of fun sending the coaster down a steep drop and up short ramp to nowhere so it would go airborne across the park.
danielecook··on Show HN: Godspeed is a fast, 100% keyboard oriented todo app for Mac
I use a notebook and pen. It's like having another screen, except it's my list of todo's and its always open and in front of me.

I write a list of todos, check them off as I go, then rewrite that list once the page is full or after a few days - leaving off those that are done. I've found it works better than any app (and I have tried many).

danielecook··on Show HN: Real-time image generation with SDXL Lightning
This is incredible. The reduction in latency has a profound effect in terms of the way I interact with this type of tool. The speed benefit is more than just more image generation. The speed here helps me easily keep the same train of thought moving along as I try different things.
danielecook··on Do It Yourself Blind Repair
I wasn't aware of this. It's a pre-owned home. I plan to switch to cordless anyway.
danielecook··on Do It Yourself Blind Repair
I ordered parts from here after the plastic hunter douglas cradle pieces I had shattered into a million pieces. I didn’t even know what the parts were called but the site had really good technical drawings and pictures of each piece with their names.

Anyways, I’m now considering DIYing some new blinds. My current blinds have 3 cords per window - I am hoping to switch to cordless with a tilt wand (child safety first). Has anyone gone about this before and have any tips?

danielecook··on Gemini AI
The text beside it says "Automatic speech recognition (based on word error rate, lower is better)"
danielecook··on Fannie Mae New Rule: The Better Your Credit Score the Higher Your Mortgage Rate
A false narrative is being pushed here. All conservative outlets are carrying this story without providing any detail or nuance.
danielecook··on Early Remote Work Impacts on Family Formation
I lived in North Carolina for a summer. From 7am - 9pm everyday you can hear leaf blowers. It’s absolutely ridiculous how loud those machines are.

I later bought an electric blower and lawn mower. They are super quiet. No exhaust. It helps to have a small yard.

danielecook··on Show HN: I made Hacker News but for research papers
A few years ago I created upvote.pub (source code: https://github.com/danielecook/upvote.pub)

It never really caught on - but it was a fun project. I do hope something like this takes off. It was able to import publications using DOIs, PMIDs, PMCids, Arxiv, and Biorxiv.

danielecook··on Ask HN: How do you exercise?
If you are close enough to work and can find a good route - commute by bike. Forces you to have a routine. 2x workouts a day.

I commute to work by bike and love it.

danielecook··on Build, gather, brawl, repeat: The history of real-time strategy games (2017)
I loved playing red alert and command and conquer online when I was younger. It seems like the genre has fallen off.

I recently discovered They Are Billions which I found to be a fun variation of traditional RTS. The goal is to manage resources to build up defenses and defend against large zombie attacks. Single-player only, but I've played it for over 100 hours!

danielecook··on Ask HN: Share your personal site
https://www.danielecook.com mostly a technical blog. I added a photos section for fun which is my favorite part.
danielecook··on Peloton – A call for action [pdf]
Maybe something like this?

https://www.devontechnologies.com/apps/devonthink

I haven’t used it personally but I think it could be used for this type of research.

danielecook··on The history of Facebook Marketplace
I have used fb marketplace and it’s been great for buying and selling locally. But of course the default listing is polluted with a bunch of irrelevant crap from companies and very low quality ads. I haven’t found a way to set the default to local and for pickup only. The only thing I’m interested in is person to person transactions.
danielecook··on What really happened at the Millennium Tower?
One thing I have wondered is - when the building sank 18 inches, did they have to add a step down at the entrance?
danielecook··on Is going to the office a broken way of working?
I have seen a few new cool club ideas that might help fill this void.

In Kansas City there is a dog club (your dog is the member), but it features a bar, workspace, food, events: barkdogbar.com. You drop off your dog to play with the others and can socialize with others, work, etc.

In Chicago - there is guild row (guild row.co) (disclosure: my cousin is a cofounder). This social club is centered around making things.

danielecook··on Amazon has ruined search and Google is in on it
Yes! I hate the move to information sparsity and hiding functionality to make things look “cleaner”
danielecook··on In defense of hard counters in real time strategy games
Check out They are Billions. It has an RTS-like feel, but the strategy is largely defensive.
danielecook··on Alcohol-free beer is fizzing
I joined my wife in giving up alcohol during pregnancy. I have thoroughly enjoyed Athletics. I will also recommend odouls amber and Heineken 0.

I’d love to see more restaurants carry more varieties of non alcoholic beer and more brewery’s try their hand at making one.

danielecook··on Why electric cars will take over sooner than you think
A charging station at home is a net benefit in my book. That’s a good chunk of time saved each month.
danielecook··on Experian’s credit freeze security is still a joke
It does seem weird. All I can say is that changing the tip amount is rare. I’ve never seen it happen, or perhaps I’ve never noticed.

Additionally, I don’t worry about it thou because my past experience suggests I can reverse the charges if I call the credit card company fairly easily.

danielecook··on I wrote one of the fastest DataFrame libraries
Pretty impressed with the data.table benchmarks. The syntax is a little weird and takes getting used to but once you have the basics it’s a great tool.
danielecook··on Sharrows, the bicycle infrastructure that doesn’t work and nobody wants
I think this idea can be transferred to cities. To me the best bike network is one that is independent of the road network. Look at the 606 or lake front path in Chicago.

Look at Boulder Colorado which has an extensive network where many of the paths hug the creek running through the city.

The easiest place to start in most cities is to just build paths along rivers and streams that go beneath or above roads.

danielecook··on Dropshipping: Hustlers making millions from goods they never handle
Consumer reports goes a step further and tests products. People have to be willing to pay for reviews.
