daniel_reetz··on Epicurus for Our Time
A very interesting question in philosophy is "Why do people like scary movies?" - being scared is uncomfortable! A related question might be "Why do people eat spicy food" - I mean, it's painful!

When you explore the answers to these questions, you may develop an appreciation for the magic of the dark, the anxious, and the frightening.

daniel_reetz··on Tesla workers shared sensitive images recorded by customer cars
Also making the victim believe they are at fault for the abusive behavior.

I can't count the number of times I've heard naive users blame themselves when it's a device/system/app misaligned with their interests.

daniel_reetz··on In the battle between Microsoft and Google, LLM is the weapon too deadly to use
There's a term for this anthropomorphic error in the neurosciences/psychology - a homonculus. Like your theory implies there's a little man in there doing the work. (homonculus also has other meanings in neuro, including cortical mappings, just sayin)
daniel_reetz··on In the battle between Microsoft and Google, LLM is the weapon too deadly to use
I was extremely skeptical, but after playing with these things and listening to discussions held by their creators, I'm fairly convinced that this is intelligence-adjacent. In the same sense that there must be thoughts an organic brain can't think, there are types of intelligence that don't map exactly onto ours. Vaguely like Feynman's peculiary methods of doing integrals - his method was different, so he could solve things unsolvable by people with standard methods.
daniel_reetz··on Ask HN: What's the name of this concept related to surveillance
I feel like either Mozilla or the EFF published a website on this about ten years ago.
daniel_reetz··on Original Prusa MK4
I own and operate two Bambu X1C with AMS for my prototyping business. They're excellent printers. Since I received them, I have practically stopped using all other printers. They are gamechangers, printing twice or three times as fast, in dramatically higher quality, in engineering materials. Second hand experience from the forum is not giving you the full picture.
daniel_reetz··on An Open-Source Espresso
The builder reuses the pump from a real espresso machine. It might not reach exactly 9 bars, but it's between 7 and 9. I don't know where your skepticism comes from.

Source: I own and repair espresso machines as my hobby and for my daily coffee habit.

daniel_reetz··on Online daters are less open-minded than their filters suggest
Profound statement. Online dating reveals a whole lot to a careful self-observer- most of it quite uncomfortable or counter to self-image. I'd bet there are many analogs in advertising and other surveillance/tracking heavy industries. "They say they want this, but they consistently click on that"...
daniel_reetz··on Post-GPT Computing
Businesses take time to react and this is recent. I'm close to Hollywood and these technologies are seeing their first value-generating uses on every project I'm privy to. What you see in public is just that-public.
daniel_reetz··on A eulogy for Dark Sky, a data visualization masterpiece
Another example: Corporate HQs have world class internet access. No latency high bandwidth connections. If folks building lazy loading web interfaces had to use their stuff in rural North Dakota, much less outside the US, they'd be shocked at how terribly it performs and user-hostile it feels.
daniel_reetz··on Thoughts on Video Editing (2022)
They were framed well, yes, but also more specifically framed with the subject at the center of the frame, so not much eye movement was needed.
daniel_reetz··on Copyright Registration Guidance: Works containing material generated by AI
Agree, it's fascinating to think we could just generate a whole new public domain.

Also, it's fascinating to think humans might be kept in the creative loop only to establish copyright status. Legal enablers.

daniel_reetz··on Twitch CEO Emmett Shear is resigning
They had carte blanche and they literally made a worse version of the television model. The staff don't get paid for their work, and we have to watch more ads that watch us.
daniel_reetz··on Knots smaller than human hair make materials unusually tough
I want to offer a tempered view. The comment does seem deep and it probably is. But I work in physical prototyping - new products, new technologies. I do the "design and manufacture from real materials in the real world" part. I own a few hundred thousand dollars in advanced machinery and make parts for FAANGs and tiny research startups. I'm a named inventor on something like 16 patents. And yet daily, I read confident, well worded answers here -- about my domain -- which reflect views completely divorced from reality, or in living in some strange parallel reality.

Personally, I try to recognize this as an opportunity for me to be humble (as I never know who may read my comments from a higher place of skill and domain knowledge), and also to take what is posted here with a grain of salt.

daniel_reetz··on Flux Keyboard
Yep. Magnets and magnetic cleverness are a real problem for those of us doing any kind of metalwork. They suck up all kinds of conductive metal chips and grinding dust. Even the speaker in a phone can be problematic.
daniel_reetz··on Qualcomm CEO says he’s expecting Apple to use its own modems in iPhones in 2024
Some suppliers are paid a premium. Some get absolutely squeezed. Just depends. I'm glad you were on the premium side.
daniel_reetz··on How white can white paint get?
The primary ingredient in housepaint is rutile titanium dioxide particles, which have a very high refractive index. The particles are suspended in a carrier which, when drying, creates air voids. The air/TiO2 refractive index change, as light bounces around inside, is what gives white paint it's hiding/wall covering power.

In other words, artist paint and house paint use the same base pigment. Almost all commercially available "white" housepaints are based on titanium dioxide pigment. The special thing about artist paint is the extraordinarily high concentration of pigment.

daniel_reetz··on Report: U.S. pedestrian death rate increased during COVID
Here in Los Angeles, I noticed a dramatic uptick in phone usage while driving over this time period. I believe the primary cause of driver and pedestrian distraction is phone usage.
daniel_reetz··on Plastic-based fuels may present an “unreasonable risk” to human health
And the soy plastic alternatives have caused huge problems in practice. Squirrels and mice totaling entire brand new cars by eating the insulation. Not to mention terrible longevity.
daniel_reetz··on Disinfection with Far-UV (222 nm Ultraviolet light) (2020) [pdf]
Perhaps 222nm is absorbed primarily by dead skin cells - but why is skin the only tissue mentioned? It says nothing about damage to corneal and conjunctival tissues. Eye damage is a major hazard for humans with UV light in particular. "Very low risk" simply doesn't track. "Reduced risk" might.
daniel_reetz··on Disinfection with Far-UV (222 nm Ultraviolet light) (2020) [pdf]
Let's be clear here. Nothing outside of some extremely filtered high end equipment is producing exactly and only 222nm light, and no cancer study is isolating exactly and only 222nm light. Except in extreme cases all light sources have some bandwidth. Most UV generators produce tens to hundreds of nm of bandwidth. A common MIG or TIG welder produces plenty of 222nm light in a broad distribution* of UV. UV lamps for curing applications have used arcs to generate deep UV for ages. Lack of a particular study for a particular 1nm band is not a meaningful signal.

daniel_reetz··on Bigscreen Beyond – Small VR Headset
When you look at the mechanical design of most VR headsets, a lot of weight, space and effort is spent making the interpupillary distance adjustable. They made a deliberate choice here to manufacture chassis with fixed IPD, and to mold the front. It moves the weight and mechanical complexity out of the headset and into the ordering and manufacturing process.
daniel_reetz··on Lytro Unlock – Making a bad camera slightly better
My point was that the depth information increases with greater stereo baseline (distance between lytros in this case).

Depth maps from light fields were a topic Disney Research was publishing on while I was there. Great stuff, highly recommend checking out their siggraph paper.

daniel_reetz··on Apple: The only big tech giant going against the job cuts tide
Exactly right. Just because you can't see it, doesn't mean it's not there.
daniel_reetz··on Lytro Unlock – Making a bad camera slightly better
Author, if you're reading, a really cool thing would be to create a small array of these cameras (4 of them) side by side.

The very wide baseline should allow you to enhance/deepen the refocusing effect and create a wide format image. I've always wanted to do this.

daniel_reetz··on How we turned the tables to catch my sister’s Bumble stalker
Thirding it. I have been near several abusive relationships in my life and it really opened my eyes to the power dynamics that were invisible from the outside.
daniel_reetz··on Lights have been on at this school for a year because no one can turn them off
Mine, too. In a rural area in the Midwest in the 80s.

daniel_reetz··on Apple HomePod 2nd Generation
With respect, I'd just like to add that this is the company that famously said "You're holding it wrong". Voice assistants fail in surprising and strange ways. Retraining might help, it might not.
daniel_reetz··on Apple HomePod 2nd Generation
Thank you. This is a perspective that is often overlooked. We all know the shortcomings of software engineering - why are we blaming the user first?
daniel_reetz··on Boris Yeltsin's visit to a suburban Houston supermarket in 1989 (2016)
Right, or like one fellow I know "It's the same anywhere you go". No, it's not.
