daniel-s··on Ask HN: Why Companies Do Not Provide RSS Feeds of Job Openings
I think that this is the answer. HR are very unremarkable people and OP is asking for something a little above and beyond.
daniel-s··on France rejects backdoor mandate
These aren't dumb people. They know exactly what they're asking for. Privacy and security of the public's data is not a priority to them, surveillance and power is. Politicians would much prefer all communication in plaintext, to hell with individual freedoms and privacy, especially European politicians that don't come from the same traditions of freedom as the anglophone countries.

What politician do you expect to openly confess the above in public. These are world-leading politicians, i.e., professional athletes of lying and obfuscation.

daniel-s··on F-Droid's Progress and What's Coming in 2025
Is that as big a problem for PWAs? These apps are still running in the browser so never have access to many parts of a phone a native app would.
daniel-s··on A Console-Friendly Pastebin with binary support
I have heard good things about https://www.stopforumspam.com/.
daniel-s··on A Console-Friendly Pastebin with binary support
> This is a console friendly pastebin that allows binary files. No fancy website, no intermediate pages to click through, and no CAPTCHAs.

The site is cool, but is it not just going to be abused?

daniel-s··on My 71 TiB ZFS NAS After 10 Years and Zero Drive Failures
Does dust matter for SSD drives?
daniel-s··on The Simple Algorithm That Ants Use to Build Bridges (2018)
Violence and fraud has nothing to do with freedom. This is a red herring.
daniel-s··on The Simple Algorithm That Ants Use to Build Bridges (2018)
This is really cynical.

You live in a society where almost everyone goes to work to produce something that they will not directly consume.

Humans figured out a way to organise everyone and get them to work cooperatively, it's the free market.

In fact, it couldn't work any other way. Suppose you had 100% altruism and everyone wanted to promote the "greater good". You wouldn't ever know how to direct people towards that greater good. You need prices to drive production.

daniel-s··on I picked up a shitty NUC from ewaste and it had a label on it for an AI company
It's hard to explain to my non-technical friends/relatives, i.e., everyone I know outside work, why I'm careful about digital security and privacy.
daniel-s··on GIL Become Optional in Python 3.13
Do you mean like mypy and optional type hints or something different, enforceable like Typescript?
daniel-s··on 10% of Cubans left Cuba between 2022 and 2023
If Cuba were a free society instead of being run by communists they would have an economy that worked. This is the destruction caused by ~¾ of a century of central economic planning and Marxist ideology.
daniel-s··on What is the significance of the character "j" at the end of a Roman Numeral? (2013)
I think the reason is different. Some languages have official bodies that decree how a language works. For example the French have the French Academy.

English has no "boss" in charge of how the language works and who decides what the correct anything for the language is. The closest are style guides, but they come from multiple organisations and each often different to each other. So, it's harder to just decide that something will be spelt differently.

daniel-s··on He created Oculus headsets as a teenager, now he makes AI weapons for Ukraine
Quick search, seems he donated to an anti-Hillary political group in 2016. That appears to be what attracts the accusation of racism.

Link to a quote or video of what he has done/said if you have further to add to the above.

daniel-s··on How Not to Talk to Your Kids (2007)
IMO that applies for adults too.
daniel-s··on Single vendor is the new proprietary
I read this article and feel no further informed on this topic. Avoid.
daniel-s··on German state gov. ditching Windows for Linux, 30K workers migrating
LibreOffice is fine, but IMO the main appeal of Office is all of the collaborative tools: realtime collaboration on documents, SharePoint/document sharing, OneDrive, Teams integration, etc.

How does that work on Linux+LibreOffice?

daniel-s··on Majority of workers at Mercedes plant in Alabama sign UAW authorization cards
I always saw unions as a bureaucratic/political layer that sits on top of workers, collecting money without contributing.

I also don't think that people should all get the same pay or collectively bargain. Some people work harder, invest more in their skills, bring a better attitude, etc. They should get paid more.

daniel-s··on UK Wind Farms Are Overstating Their Output
There is not reference or context in your comment. Are you simply suggesting that someone is corrupt because you dislike their political position?
daniel-s··on Post Office lied and threatened BBC over Fujitsu dev whistleblower
Once that happens what is the process to overturn the old convictions?
daniel-s··on Is Fortran “A Dead Language”? (2022)
I just linked a short because I figured it fit into the attention span of a typical internet user.

If you want something more reasoned there's this: https://blog.nindalf.com/posts/stop-citing-tiobe/

daniel-s··on Is Fortran “A Dead Language”? (2022)
Sorry to be negative on the web, but the TIOBE index has no value whatsoever and is complete gibberish. Nobody should be paying attention to it.

daniel-s··on Most 16-year-olds don't have servers in their rooms
This is the really cool thing about the internet. When otherwise would these 2 16 year olds have found each other?

They would otherwise have had to go to the same high school.

daniel-s··on Autonomous subs use AI to wayfind without GPS
Learning that is difficult. It is a skill that needs to be worked on by learning maths, then control, dynamics. Instead, learn to use an AI framework and you can solve the problem with orders of magnitude more computing.

Not advocating one way or another, just that that's probably the thinking. Also, it's in vogue.

daniel-s··on Visual Basic for Applications Language Specification [pdf]
Doesn't Libreoffice have an implementation of VBA?
daniel-s··on A connection between after-hours work and decreased productivity
Learn Python, automate your work.

Develop a relationship with someone that knows Python, have them automate your work.

Alternatively, learn VBA if you live in Word.

Alternative 2, just learn to be more proficient with the tools that you use.

If there's something that I have discovered it is that many people's office jobs could be automated—or at least much more efficient—if they were developers.

Any task that you do that involves any kind of data, developing reports that can be templated, Excel, could all probably be automated.

daniel-s··on Pixel 8 Pro owners complain about display bumps
Sometimes people don't realise that complaining about something is actually a type of compliment.

The most newsworthy complaint about the screen is that there exists an optical illusion that causes some users to think the screen is uneven:

* When off. * Under the correct lighting conditions.

In other words, it's so close to perfect that there is that little to complain about.

daniel-s··on Advent of Code 2023's new AI/LLM Policy
Probably the same people that cheat at online videogames.
daniel-s··on $8B Sam Bankman-Fried criminal trial starts today
Nobody thinks or reasons like this. Penalties are set by politicians. They are more a political decision than anything else.
daniel-s··on Nobel Prize in Physics Awarded to Agostini, Krausz, and L’Huillier
The Chinese translates to, "classical novels," according to Google.
daniel-s··on Germans shrug off economic gloom at booming Oktoberfest
I think that this is relevant. German industry has collapsed after the natural gas input from Russia got cut off.
