danhak··on Twitter, TikTok Have Held Preliminary Talks About Possible Combination
Do you see the irony of your posting a cynical, throwaway comment like this while complaining of toxicity on other platforms?
danhak··on US to ban transactions with ByteDance and WeChat in 45 days
What a bizarre and interesting turn. I'd give a lot to be able to sit in on the meetings between TikTok and Microsoft right now.

I wonder if FB will come over the top with a bid.

danhak··on Blackstone to Acquire Ancestry.com for $4.7B
Correct. See, for example, this story about a man being arrested and jailed for a crime he didn’t commit because his photo was in a database:

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/24/technology/facial-recogni...

The implications for misuse of genetic information are even more serious.

danhak··on Blackstone to Acquire Ancestry.com for $4.7B
That it's foolish to have your genome in a database because there is no guarantee with regard to how that data may be used or misused in the future, or even who will own it.
danhak··on Blackstone to Acquire Ancestry.com for $4.7B
You can't. It's like the folks who say "just don't use Facebook." Well, that doesn't prevent other people from tagging me in photos.
danhak··on Gold price rises above $2k for first time
Storage, security / insurance and exchange of physical gold is not free either.
danhak··on Gold price rises above $2k for first time
Not everybody holds gold as a hedge against complete and utter collapse. It can be a sensible hedge against a weakening dollar, such as is currently happening.
danhak··on Gold price rises above $2k for first time
Which is nonsense. Hyperinflation can occur without the financial system crumbling. And in that scenario you’ll be glad you had a position in gold, even just digitally.
danhak··on Apple reports Q3 results
Regarding Facebook ads: We are in the throes of a general election cycle, I'm curious how much of the slack that has been picking up. Anecdotally I am seeing tons of political ads across the internet.

I am also curious if increased internet usage in general is compensating for lower PPC as people are stuck at home.

danhak··on Goldman warns on inflation threat to dollar as reserve currency
That is the big question and I think the answer remains to be seen. Is Covid an acute crisis where we quickly bounce back to "normal," or is it the catalyst for a broader deleveraging that may have been due for several years and with many of the layoffs being "sticky"
danhak··on Goldman warns on inflation threat to dollar as reserve currency
Yes, of course, I understand that. But in the middle of a recession that becomes Sophie's choice: do you raise rates to curb inflation while killing the chance of a recovery?
danhak··on Goldman warns on inflation threat to dollar as reserve currency
The difference between this moment and 2018 or 2014 is that we are in the middle of a bona fide crisis, and we went into it with rates already near rock bottom.

That leaves few options if dollar continues to weaken and inflation becomes concerning.

danhak··on Goldman warns on inflation threat to dollar as reserve currency
The dollar has been weakening precipitously, with the dollar index declining nearly 10% over the past few months.

I’m curious to hear tomorrow how the Fed intends to address this.

danhak··on 11M households could be evicted over the next four months
The parent seems to be implying that fed policy will continue to drive down the value of the dollar.

In this scenario savers get crushed as inflation whittles away the value of cash while asset prices climb. And the “folks with little savings and expensive mortgages” that you allude to actually come out on top.

danhak··on 11M households could be evicted over the next four months
There’s just that pesky issue of having to pay a mortgage...
danhak··on TikTok’s Chinese parent is scrambling to hang on to its hit app
Well, yeah. This is about protecting American interests not privacy. America would prefer to be the only country spying on Americans.
danhak··on Perseverance Toward Life Goals Can Fend Off Depression, Anxiety, Panic Disorders
Or it's not "or" but "and," with the the two feeding each other in a positive feedback loop.
danhak··on Q2 2020 Update
About half of the quarter under discussion.
danhak··on Q2 2020 Update
You realize their factory was shut down for much of this period, right? Comparing YOY quarterly figures here is very disingenuous.
danhak··on Hackers take over prominent Twitter accounts in simultaneous attack
Don't know why you're getting downvoted here. The after hours moves in TWTR and TSLA (assuming they're mostly attributable to the hack) absolutely dwarf the amount collected by the hack itself. TWTR has shed about $643 million in market cap, TSLA $2.4 billion.
danhak··on Hackers take over prominent Twitter accounts in simultaneous attack
Seems like a very paltry sum compared to other ways they could have capitalized on market-moving tweets.
danhak··on The stock market and economy have parted ways
In a consumer-driven economy, current unemployment rates are inextricably linked to the expected future performance of large companies.
danhak··on The stock market and economy have parted ways
Forgive me if I say this sounds awfully like the "new paradigm" / "this time it's different!" phase of a bubble.
danhak··on The stock market and economy have parted ways
Then you concur that the market is being driven by FOMO and not low interest rates?
danhak··on The stock market and economy have parted ways
This trope gets repeated over and over but it just makes no sense. Volatility is risk. What rational investor says "interest rates are too low, I MUST deploy my capital into a market that is seeing wild 30% gyrations from month to month instead of parking it safely while this global crisis plays out."
danhak··on The stock market and economy have parted ways
A very slight discount? As of writing, the Nasdaq is at all time high and the S&P only 5% below. All this with depression-level unemployment.
danhak··on Voice, an invite-only social network where everyone is verified
That’s deliberate. I don’t want to identify my friend on this forum. I am disputing the parent’s assertion that “cancel culture” is limited to a few high profile cases. It is far more prevalent than that. The high profile cases are obviously just the ones that most people are aware of.
danhak··on Voice, an invite-only social network where everyone is verified
I believed this until this year. Then I saw it happen to a friend who is prominent in his niche industry but otherwise unknown.

He was disgraced via Twitter and forced to step down from the firm he created for making some offensive jokes.

danhak··on Jeff Bezos’s Wealth Soars to $171.6B to Top Pre-Divorce Record
They were compensated for their labor. That’s how employment works.
danhak··on Jeff Bezos’s Wealth Soars to $171.6B to Top Pre-Divorce Record
What is the alternative? For people not to own the things they create?
