dangson··on People Who Hunt Down Old TVs
This helps validate my memories of SNES and PS1 games looking so much better when I was a kid than on an emulator today.
dangson··on A mouseless tale: trying for a keyboard-driven desktop
You might be thinking of Shortcat. I've been using it for a while and it mostly works but doesn't seem as polished as Homerow. Going to give that one a try now.

dangson··on Microwaved plastic containers release microplastics into food
Aeropress will be releasing a premium version made out of glass later this year.

dangson··on How to fully uninstall apps in macOS just using bash
I've been using AppCleaner to do this for years. It's free and works well.

dangson··on Modern PHP Cheat Sheet
Here is the explanation: https://www.php.net/manual/en/function.md5.php#123392
dangson··on Elevated Error Rates at Reddit
The Apollo Reddit client for iOS just released a Safari extension that redirects all Reddit links into the app. Works well for getting around their horrible mobile site.
dangson··on Jet Li rejected The Matrix as he didn’t want his kung fu moves recorded (2018)
“I realized the Americans wanted me to film for three months but be with the crew for nine. And for six months, they wanted to record and copy all my moves into a digital library.”

The difference is they wanted to motion capture his moves in addition to the regular filing process.

dangson··on iPhone 6S getting iOS 14 is like the Galaxy S6 getting Android 11
Try doing a battery replacement. I bought one off Amazon for $20 and it came with all the necessary tools. The process was pretty easy if you watch a few guides on YouTube beforehand.
dangson··on DuckDuckGo Traffic
DDG gives you the option to have it detect your location or you can set your location manually. I just set mine to approximately my usual location and it gives pretty good location-based results. For example, “pizza near me” shows a map with a bunch of nearby pizzerias.
dangson··on JetBrains Mono: A free and open-source typeface for developers
Try changing the antialiasing to Greyscale under Appearance & Behavior - Appearance. That made it less blurry for my PhpStorm installation on macOS.
dangson··on Show HN: Phoenix 2.6 – a macOS window and app manager scriptable with JavaScript
This is fantastic! The readme with animated GIF's is really helping me learn the shortcuts. Thanks for sharing.
dangson··on Buying Lotion on Amazon.com
He'll also now see ads for lotions across the entire internet. To me that's the creepiest part about shopping on Amazon. I will see ads for things I searched for days afterwards.
dangson··on Fast.com: Netflix internet connection speed test
Not surprisingly since this is downloading Netflix content, it doesn't work when I'm connected through Private Internet Access VPN.
dangson··on OpenGrid – Chicago Releases User-Friendly Open Data Tool
That picture of Chicago is pretty cool, but it's really annoying to have to load a 5.3 MB picture when opening a site.
dangson··on San Bernardino County tweets it reset attacker iCloud password at FBI's request
iMessages for one. They're encrypted and aren't stored on Apple's servers, but are easily accessible (no password on the app) once the phone has been unlocked.
dangson··on Linode is suffering on-going DDoS attacks
This helped me a bit because most of my clients are on vacation so I haven't received as many emails about sites being down/slow as I normally would've.
dangson··on Ask HN: Free/Open-Source Invoicing Software?
+1 for Zoho. I've been using it for a few months and really like it. Their iOS app is also pretty good for viewing time sheets and logging time.
dangson··on Amazon Shows Off New Prime Air Drone with Hybrid Design
I think the poster was implying that you trick the drone into delivering your neighbor's package into your backyard by putting the card out even when you're not expecting a delivery.
dangson··on [dead]
Maybe it's because I read the book and can fill in the gaps, but that trailer seemed like it gave away the entire plot of the movie. Astronaut gets left behind on Mars and while he's coming up with ingenious ways to survive, someone comes up with a plan to rescue him that might result in his entire crew dying. I think the trailer should've left out that last part about the rescue operation because we all know their plan is going to work.
dangson··on MovieLens – Non-Commercial, Personalized Movie Recommendation System
Maybe ask the user to enter three movies they like and then give a recommendation based off those three. I'd be more compelled to sign up once I see the recommendation it returns isn't completely off the mark.
dangson··on NewsBot: The fastest way to find related articles
Just checked out Lateral and it seems really cool. Just wondering what your monetization plan is. I'd like to use this for a site I develop at work, but wouldn't want you guys to suddenly announce exorbitant fees or shut down due to insufficient funding.
dangson··on MacBook Pro Repair Extension Program for Video Issues
I don't know how much a few anecdotes matter, but to answer your question, no. My MacBook from 2009 is running perfectly fine today. I used it quite heavily throughout college and always keep it on sleep mode so it's been running pretty much continuously for years. I did replace the hard-drive with an SSD, but I still use the original as a small portable drive.

After giving that MacBook to my dad, I upgraded to a 13" Retina MacBook Pro, which is amazing. I used it for a few months before selling it to my brother and switching to the late 2013 15" one. Both laptops are running great and there are no screen issues.

And for what it's worth, I had a positive experience when I needed to bring the 15" into the Apple store. I had stupidly used a cheap wireless mouse with a plastic USB connector and a piece of plastic got stuck in the USB port. Apple removed it free of charge.

dangson··on Those making $1,000+/month on side projects – what did you make?
Did you also make http://www.chaseroutingnumber.com/ ? Looks exactly the same.
dangson··on 129 Cars
I bought a car recently and I can tell you if I've gone through all that paperwork and haggling, I want my car that night. There's no way I'm waiting until the next day to get my car just so some dealership can get a head start on its quota.
dangson··on Paid for Stripe
Looks good! A few numbers are off for me, though.

Paid says I have a transfer today, but it's actually coming tomorrow according to the Stripe site (and my bank account :)

The monthly volume on the dashboard is also 6x my current volume. Is it estimating what my volume would be for the month based on the amount so far?

dangson··on All of my side-projects from 2012
StepStats is great! I just got a Fitbit for Christmas and these graphs are a lot better than the ones on the Fitbit site. The best part is they work on iOS devices unlike the Flash ones that Fitbit uses.
dangson··on One reason Gmail for iOS still sucks
The subject line and contact info also take up a lot of vertical space. The actual content of the email doesn't start until halfway down the screen. Compare this to iOS Mail where the content starts about 20% down (the contact details are hidden until you click Details).

If the author weren't using an iPhone 5 with the longer screen, the first paragraph of the email would barely be visible.

dangson··on Shortcat: Spotlight for OS X's UI
This is awesome! I use Vimium, an extension for Chrome that does something similar, but have always wanted to be able to use my keyboard for the entire OS. http://vimium.github.com/
dangson··on Cute Look at the Robots Amazon Just Bought for $775 Million
Why is there even a human picker? In the video it looks like all the picker does is grab the item from the inventory pod and put it in a box. That seems like it can definitely be automated.
dangson··on Rant on Email Notifications
Realistically, how often does this happen though? Even my worst enemies wouldn't unsubscribe me from a mailing list just to piss me off. Plus, anyone I forward an email to is probably an acquaintance who wouldn't do that.

The benefits of 1-click unsubscribe and not receiving additional unwanted emails outweigh this small chance of being unsubscribe from a list I want to be on.
