Love their network filtering, however it definitely lacks some capabilities (like the ability to do direct TCP connections to Postgres, or direct IP connections.

Those limitations from other tools was exactly why I made https://github.com/danthegoodman1/netfence for our agents

dangoodmanUT··on ChatGPT Containers can now run bash, pip/npm install packages and download files
Giving agents linux has compounding benefits in our experience. They're able to sort through weirdness that normal tooling wouldn't allow. Like they can read and image, get an error back from the API and see it wasn't the expected format. They read the magic bytes to see it was a jpeg despite being named .png, and read it correctly.

dangoodmanUT··on Show HN: Netfence – Like Envoy for eBPF Filters
Maybe not, but we're not using k8s for our agent VMs
dangoodmanUT··on Show HN: Netfence – Like Envoy for eBPF Filters
For looking up the IP or whether you are permitted for some host?

For the former you don't, it's just DNS. The local DNS server respects TTL, and is no more expensive than a normal DNS lookup. It just proxies it to take the resolved IPs and push them into the eBPF map.

For the latter, the default expectation is that you push the rules to the "Attachment", typically in the "SyncAck". If you need to make updates, you push down deltas (add/remove rule).

You _can_ do dynamic DNS resolution, and there you'll be paying either 1x or ~2x DNS depending on whether your control plane already knows the IPs.

dangoodmanUT··on Show HN: Netfence – Like Envoy for eBPF Filters
I agree.

I thought about putting xDS in, but I worried it might be confusing for people who might not know the xDS specifics of Envoy. But now I'm second guessing it lol.

dangoodmanUT··on Show HN: ChartGPU – WebGPU-powered charting library (1M points at 60fps)
Some of these don't feel 60fps, like the streaming one. I don't really know how to verify that though. Or maybe i'm just so used to 144fps.
dangoodmanUT··on Ask HN: Is it still worth pursuing a software startup?
Yes, otherwise there wouldn't be billions of dollars flowing into seed rounds every year to make novel products.

Not sure why you think a large company can copy a product in no time, they have to steer a cargo ship, you have a speed boat.

dangoodmanUT··on ClickHouse acquires Langfuse
The fact that all metrics are relative doesn't suggest they got an amazing deal
dangoodmanUT··on ClickHouse acquires Langfuse
Your notes aren't very good. They're not a time series database company, they're a columnar database company. But yeah the LLM bit is weird, database companies _always_ feel like charlatans when it comes to LLMs.

Checkpoints defined by the guest, not the host, was something I was working on recently too [1] (just before this came out). Very validating!

dangoodmanUT··on Bubblewrap: A nimble way to prevent agents from accessing your .env files
I've been saying bubblewrap is an amazing solution for years (and sandbox-exec as a mac alternative). This is the only way i run agents on systems i care about
dangoodmanUT··on Claude Cowork exfiltrates files
This is why we only allow our agent VMs to talk to pip, npm, and apt. Even then, the outgoing request sizes are monitoring to make sure that they are resonably small
dangoodmanUT··on Apple Creator Studio
Thank god they preserved the one time purchase. I bought all of these apps back in like ~2013 and have been using them for literally 13 years with all updates (fcp, compressor, motion)

good on them

dangoodmanUT··on CLI agents make self-hosting on a home server easier and fun
i'm still waiting for ECC minipcs, then i'll go all in on local DBs too
dangoodmanUT··on CLI agents make self-hosting on a home server easier and fun
definitely, but to be fair, beyond that it's just linux. Most people would need claude code to get what ever they want to use linux for running reliably (systemd service, etc.)
dangoodmanUT··on Show HN: SpecificProxy – Proxy Using a Specific IP
That's probably just "what ever the OS does". The client only sees the IP used to connect to the proxy, and the proxy just says "please dial TCP using this IP", so it's up to the OS.

On another note, are you an LLM? You just made an account to post something that looks llm generated, and that one repo has contributors @pd8030938 and @aj9704845-code only

you have to tell me if you are, those are the rules
