dangerface··on Twitter to employees: all office buildings closed, badge access suspended
This is very true. I learned this the hard way when I moved from making games that only ran for an hour to making server stuff and wondering why I couldn't keep a site up for more than a day and how are you supposed to debug if it takes a day for it to reach failure point. I haven't had the issue in a long time but I can see that being an issue if you are used to break stuff and release quick.
dangerface··on Twitter to employees: all office buildings closed, badge access suspended
> * Twitter employees amuse themselves by making billionaire's life difficult

Elon got them to print out their code and pissed off the advertisers that where paying them. I don't think it was the employees that made life difficult.

dangerface··on Wikipedians are rebelling against “unethical” Wikipedia fundraising banners
> Scientists in academia have to write proper ideological statements about how "woke" they are in order to research fluid dynamics.

This isn't new you have always needed to give a good reason why your research should be funded. The funding should be used to progress human knowledge or contribute to your community, save lives etc.

The days of righting "fluid dynamics is cool $500k plz" aren't behind us they simply never existed.

dangerface··on Wikipedians are rebelling against “unethical” Wikipedia fundraising banners
Seems reasonable for wikipedia to want more money year on year every one wants to see the platform grow. Obviously they need to cover more than just hosting costs trying to do anything for the public good results in you getting sued by every company thats trying to commercialise that good.

That being said the lack of transparency is alarming why not be public about it all? Sure some will use it against you but the people that actually care and fund them won't really care what its being spent on as long as the quality of service remains good.

dangerface··on The sinister attempts to ‘decolonise’ mathematics
It's not advice it's telling. When I say "being racist is something you shouldn't do" I am not giving advice I am telling you not to be racist.
dangerface··on The sinister attempts to ‘decolonise’ mathematics
> mathematics itself but in its transfer to sociological questions > Sociology is about distributed systems.

You make the argument that sociology is its own thing that can't be conflated with math which I think every one agrees with, isn't that the premise of the article?

Sociology has its time and place and thats in sociology, just like Math has its own time and place Math.

> What appears to be called for is increased acknowledgment that the people who discovered them also, in some cases, held morally reprehensible views

Every one in history held morally reprehensible views the Wigs, the Nazis, the Commies every one.

If we spent all day reading about all the morally reprehensible things that where done in history we would never do any maths as we would be doing history. Obviously there is more history than can be known so what is the point?

dangerface··on Agile sucks for software development and I’m tired of pretending it doesn’t
4 meetings in two weeks? You are being precious if you think thats a lot. 80% of time on work is a lot most businesses average 60%.
dangerface··on Elon Musk: “thermonuclear name & shame” against advertisers pulling out
Public perception really doesn't matter to advertisers all publicity is good publicity.
dangerface··on Survey of workers’ views on salary transparency
> Salary matters suck for everyone, I hate dealing with this aspect of my job. Everybody just wants wants wants and act like children when they don't get.

Does everybody do this or is it just you? People are paid market rate if another business thinks you are worth more they will offer you more. You then go to your boss and ask them to meet or exceed the market rate for you.

If you sell yourself as just another developer don't be surprised if your boss puts that expectation on your salery.

dangerface··on A Cypherpunk’s Manifesto (1993)
> how do we sustainably grow a crowd-sourcable archive for copyrighted digital artifacts?

You don't. Copyright is necessary for most people like developers to make a living. If some one like github can just rip off your code there is no market for developers, if there are no developers theres nothing for github to rip off.

The real issue with copyright law is the lifelong copyright destroys our ability to archive. Microsoft isn't making money off windows 98 there is no market for it, if I have an old game that only runs on windows 98 I am kinda shit out of luck. If some one releases a pirate copy of windows 98 because there is no legitimate market Microsoft legally has to sue them or risk losing their copyright not just for 98 but all windows.

We need to limit copy right to a reasonable length of time. Which then brings up the issue of what is a reasonable time? 10 years 20 years 2000 years? Businesses with the legal capabilities of Disney will always argue for the life of the author plus a million years and the rest of us don't really have the funds to compete.

Google tried it and they failed and they have more money than god. We need more money than god and the way to do it in this market is to make something we can copyright and then exploit that and after a life time of doing this we will have our money to start the legal battle, or at least our kids do. Will they act in the publics best interests and blow their wealth or will they act in their best interest?

dangerface··on Why Is Tipping Everywhere You Checkout?
> If a coffeeshop wants to pay their employees more they will have to raise prices. This makes them less competitive to any nearby coffeeshops that haven't raised prices.

You what? I can buy coffee from McDonalds for a pound, or I can get the nicer stuff from a barista for £3 the coffee is the same brown warm stuff the environment and customer service is what makes it worth the extra money.

Coffee is a luxury good trying to be the cheapest coffee isn't a winning strategy. It's like trying to make the cheapest super car. It's a race to the bottom larger companies that have scale will destroy you.

Managers do this all the time hire a bunch of 16 year olds pay them next to nothing and wonder why they spend all their time on their phone rather than impressing the customers and winning recurring business.

dangerface··on Ask HN: Are you talking to robots on Hacker News?
I think that most of online political opinions are bots spreading propaganda for who ever. When I talk to normal people about politics they have no idea what im on about.
dangerface··on Ask HN: How do you create learning plans for skills development
> how do you create learning plans (specific path towards a direction)?

Planning is the enemy of doing, spend an hour a day doing something you don't know how to. If you are an intermediate and want to advance you need to learn horizontally, broaden your horizons it will be useful in places you didn't realise don't try to specialise.

> Also how do you avoid participating in the sessions which offer beginner-friendly content?

Avoid tutorials and goto the documentation / reference. Think of something you don't know and figure out how to do it. You will fail constantly but thats the key to learning, if you only follow tutorials you will only know what to do and will never learn what not to do and why you shouldn't do that.

If you are used to academia then what I just said makes zero sense you are used to learning pre packaged lessons with the sole aim of a goal, getting a qualification. Learning in academia is like a race to the finish line this doesn't work when you leave.

As you point out there is more things to learn that there our hours in your life to learn them you need to change your learning strategy from one of goal seeking to gradual consistent improvement. The real world is awkward and doesn't try to be understandable which makes it a lot of fun when you figure it out.

dangerface··on How to Destroy Google
The video attack is pretty novel but apart form that my only take away is boycott them with adblock, I was doing that even when I liked google it didn't make a difference to their bottom line.

This is like trying to destroy the ocean by pissing in it. Good luck!

dangerface··on Twitter’s mass layoffs have begun
Timesheets, Security and Command and Control management has been a constant at every job I have worked. I have never heard of some one working on a job where these three things where not an issue.

The only time those things haven't been an issue is when I do charity work which isn't really work as I don't get paid for it, which I think is the only reason the charities take what they get and are happy with it as they have no other choice.

dangerface··on Ask HN: What Recession?
I live in the UK we are defiantly in recession but there is still more tech jobs than there are people to fill them. I got two job offers in two weeks of searching both paid more than the job I am in. I nearly didn't bother looking because of all the fud.
dangerface··on Twitter’s mass layoffs have begun
> Is the only thing that determines whether you take a job the salary ?

I mean yea I work for pay.

dangerface··on Moderation is different from censorship
Fair concerns but I have trained a Naive bayes classifier on twitter data in the past using [1] a social study of categorised tweet to train the classifier and got around 85% accuracy. It was able to detect and properly classify rape threats as abusive but conversations about rape seed oil as non abusive. Considering the small data set and how little entropy there is between samples I consider it pretty useful.

I get that no machine learning is 100% perfect which is why it should be used as an indicator rather than the deciding factor.

I have had issues with gmail blocking emails but as you point out it was always because of ip reputation not over zealous Naive Bayes.

dangerface··on Blip: A tool for seeing your internet latency
The issue is TCP's congestion control needs to wait for an ack before sending the next packet so the latency kills throughput.

Changing to UDP would get rid of the congestion control but UDP on its own would have congestion issues killing its throughput.

Bittorrent created their own congestion control called ledbat and then added that onto UDP to create UTP which could help. There is also UDT which has its own congestion control algorithm designed for 10gbps+ connections, which would significantly fix the issue.

dangerface··on Moderation is different from censorship
> Moderation wouldn’t really be fast enough to stop that

Social media keep using this excuse for not trying. We can moderate spam in emails with a simple naive bayes classifier, why don't we just do that with comments? It could easily classify comments that are part of a bandwagon and flag them automaticly hiding them or for human review.

We are able to moderate email but the concepts we use to do so are never applied to comments, I don't know why, this seems like a solved problem.

dangerface··on This file has Pantone colors that have been removed and replaced with black
RGB is used for describing the colour of light if you are a web developer like me you will never need anything else. CMYK is used for printed colours that reflect light and as such there isn't a direct correlation between them.

For example RGB blue #0000ff is so bright it can not be printed, if you tried it would look a lot darker blue than the screen shows. This issue with printed colours looking different from screen space colours is that printed colours will also look different depending on the surface they are printed onto and a variety of other variable.

Your work around is fine for me as I work in RGB and would really only need the Pantone when im printing once every 5 years? If you are a print designer then you will be using the colours all day every day and having to switch or a reference that isn't exact results in expensive printing mistakes.

dangerface··on This file has Pantone colors that have been removed and replaced with black
Pantone is an ink the public domain standard would be cmyk.

If you get five printers and ask them all to print C:11,Y:22,M:33,K:44 you get five different colours as each will have to mix their cmyk inks to get that colour.

Pantone is a spot colour that means you can buy a pot of ink thats Pantone 123 there is no mixing so the colour is always the same. If you want to print on glossy paper thats going to change the look of the colour so Pantone also do inks for each surface you want to print on, they also do dyes for plastics and clothes etc.

Edit: The difference between the five printers would be insignificant but if you are a designer or want your logo to look exactly the same on stand ups, pamphlet, business cards etc you would use a spot colour.

dangerface··on Apple security bounty upgraded
Do they actually pay out tho? I keep hearing security researchers having difficulty getting these bounties, seems like a great business strategy out source security audits, offer massive pay outs looks good, don't pay out and keep the pot growing larger to look even better.
dangerface··on Ad blocking is under attack (2017)
Most awareness is achieved through word of mouth not advertising. I assume we all know what aws and docker is but I have never seen an advert for that.

> Do you close your eyes walking around town any time you go by a store front

I think most people would just walk by without looking. You'r analogy would be that people walking past your store should be forced to look at your ads or not walk past your store.

dangerface··on Show HN: I solved my New Tab page
This is a truly excellent site I like how easy the ui is everything makes sense and I like the little tutorial it gives you much better than the ui for onboarding on most saas.
dangerface··on Signal says it won’t compromise on encryption
The average person uses whatsapp, has no idea about security, has never heard of signal. The media will tell them signal is specifically setup up to prevent law enforcement. They will give an example of a drug dealer that gets caught and has the app on their phone. Even if the dealer didn't use signal for dealing the connection is presented.

The average person will connect the dots. Signal is an underground app for illegal stuff. I have nothing to hide so I don't need Signal to exist. People must use signal for the most illegal and disturbing thing I can think of. Signal users must be pedos. Signal must be banned.

This is how power uses media to control the masses. They don't need to make the claim they simply present facts in a narrative and allow the average person to connect the dots making them feel like they figured it all out themselves.

dangerface··on Ask HN: What do you use for encrypting your personal stuff?
I use what ever full disk encryption software comes with the os. That might not be enough to prevent law enforcement but my main concern is some one stealing my laptop or needing to send it for repairs which both seem much more likely than law enforcement taking my stuff.

I use keepassxc to keep all my sensitive information and syncthing to keep it synchronised between all my devices. Having it across all my devices is super handy and provides redundancy.
