dangerboysteve··on Is Recycling a Waste of Time?
My parent grew up WWII Europe and had the same thrifty mentality. The one thing that sent me over the edge was this shitty knife my mom would always use. It started life as an okay cook knife but over 30 years after repeated sharpening started looking like a filet knife used clean fish with a worn out wooden. So it was not performing well. I had to take all the old knives and replaced them with a fancy set of German knives. Mom and dad thought they we nice but said the old knives were fine. sigh! Buy them nice Egyptian cotton bedding, into the steamer truck they went because they were too nice to use. What? sigh. And there are many other examples.
dangerboysteve··on Apple Pay on pace to account for 10% of global card transactions
Are the numbers in the article inflated? The app store uses Apple Pay. Are those numbers being lumped in?
dangerboysteve··on Human body temperature has decreased in United States, study finds
I imagine apple has this data already with their apple watch data collections.
dangerboysteve··on Major union launches campaign to organize video game and tech workers
I am not making the argument against unions, perhaps the example provided above. Not all unions are created equal. Unions can be a good thing to enact change and are proven to work in creative fields as Hollywood could attest. That being said, Hollywood seems to take dump on many post production services and VFX which traditionally don't have unions. The nature of the work also allows for the work to be farmed out to companies all over the world.

and what were your total union dues during this period ? Because if the union failed to get you a COLA increase then the dues would have put you in the red.
dangerboysteve··on Ask HN: Why are jobs gotten via referrals but online blind dating is now normal?
This is my take:

-It would limit your possible mates based on your circle of friends.

-Some people want to keep their dating life quiet as involving others can sometimes stress out the situation.

-If things don't work out there is less risk of gossip within your group.

dangerboysteve··on Ask HN: How do you protect your parents from tech scammers?
its not just scammers but also questionable charity organizations (could also be scammers). I recall her getting a donation envelope with a dollar amount she agreed to, I called the entity to tell them to F off. The organization dealt with either firefighters or police and bowling.
dangerboysteve··on Tesla's stock just hit a record $420
Every Tesla stock price increase story is always followed by the mandatory story of Tesla short sellers getting crushed.
dangerboysteve··on Teachers Pay High Fees for Retirement Funds
This Frontline doc (2013) paints a nice picture.

https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/frontline/film/retirement-gamble/

Many pension funds are screwing their members with high fee mutual funds resulting in 2-3%+ haircuts on annual returns. And this does not include all the mystery fees on top of everything else. Imagine what the compounding effects on this is. And these funds are shitty compared to Vanguard index fund over time. It comes down to shady backroom deals, kickbacks and incentive based selling.

edit: added year of the doc.

dangerboysteve··on Google Brass Set 2023 as Deadline to Beat Amazon, Microsoft in Cloud
I'm just flabbergasted this would even leak out. It will be a self fulfilling proficiency as prospective clients will shy away from Google. They must be doing damage control right now with all their latest enterprise clients who switched over. May as well start the clock on the Stadia death march. I give it 13 months.
dangerboysteve··on You might literally be buying trash on Amazon
I've had a few open boxes or obviously used items sold as new and unused from Amazon over the years. Amazon always takes them back no questions asked.

dangerboysteve··on State found $117k in double payments through data analytics
I know the comments are all "how much money did they spend to find $117K in duplicate payments" and I am one of them. But if this system helps in identifying process/audit flaws then its a good thing.
dangerboysteve··on State found $117k in double payments through data analytics
after I read the article I thought was this a situation of stepping over a dollar to pick up a dime?
dangerboysteve··on Why Kids Love Garbage Trucks
I don't think this is garbage truck specific fascination. Many years ago, I recall reading a story about a father who noticed his kids being glued to the apartment window watching a construction site next door. They were fascinated by the large and loud machines. He built a DVD video business from filming busy construction sites for kids. It was a success. Kids love big loud colorful things that move.
dangerboysteve··on Ask HN: We are shutting down our startup, I get our code. What now?
Good advice. Remember, people may not care about the code as the company is folding. But if it turns into something and money starts to flow then people's memories become foggy.

dangerboysteve··on Baltimore Blew Off Ransomware Demand Only to Find Data Had Never Been Backed Up
We do this. Every place I have worked at I've had the senior admin explain and show the backup plans for servers and desktops and demonstrate various restore requests. I have caught a few with their pants down.

Another important thing is fine granular permissions on network shares.

dangerboysteve··on SoftBank Plans $5B Rescue Financing for WeWork
I can't see that happening with all this prior history and bad press. But as they say the market is full of suckers.
