dandotway··on To set new tab as blank in MS Edge you need to enroll device in MDM
For Win 10 the Pro version allows disabling more telemetry than Home does and I pay extra to get computers that have Pro. I haven't yet researched Win 11 Home vs. Pro though and I will put off "upgrading" to Win 11 as long as I can as all I need Windows to do is run a web browser and the few programs I actually need without the hassles of reading the Arch wiki to fix desktop Linux issues or the hassles of Apple's non-upgradeable non-repairable computers that regularly break old software. "Oh, you spent all that time learning OpenGL did you? We're deprecating it pending future removal. Oh, you were using bash for 20+ years? Sorry, you're using zsh now."

Many HN readers think the visionaries who actually create billion dollar businesses have more valuable opinions/insights than the visionless corporate bureaucrats who ultimately end up in charge.

dandotway··on SDL gets an Epic MegaGrant to work on next-gen Vulkan API
I wouldn't recommend OpenGL for new games. If you are serious about learning how 3D graphics really work I instead recommend a web search for "raytracer in one weekend." Or learn how to write a simple software-based triangle rasterizer if you don't want to learn to make a raytracer. Too many younger devs get sucked into trying to write their own engines for their games, when it is best to just write a simple "learning engine" and then move on to something prebuilt like Godot, Unreal, or Unity. If you were building a hotrod car it is so much easier to just order a crate motor than to try to machine your own engine block, pistons, piston rings, valves, valve springs, etc. Would you drill your own engine oil out of the ground too or just buy a few gallons off the shelf? Same deal with food. Lots of people nowadays moving to the country thinking they will raise their own farm animals and escape industrial civilization and its discontents. Then they learn animals have expensive and time-consuming medical needs....
dandotway··on SDL gets an Epic MegaGrant to work on next-gen Vulkan API
TL;DR: SDL will develop a cross-platform GPU API that is easier to use and Just Works. Vulkan is neither because it needs 1000 lines to draw a triangle on screen and is so low level that differences between AMD and nVidia GPUs are exposed.

But I'm not sure this SDL effort is a good thing. SDL has always been behind on fixing its bug backlog for the hard things it does well, like supporting so many game controllers and audio backends, supporting iOS and Android, etc., and other efforts at an easier to use 3D API that better abstracts different vendor GPUs have been underway for some time:

- WebGPU

- Godot's shading language

I have always loved that SDL separates its libraries so you don't have to use what you don't need: if you don't need an audio mixer don't include SDL_mixer, etc. Hopefully those of us that don't need SDL 3D will still be able to skip building and including it, avoiding bringing in all the bugs, bloat, and complexity therein.

You can go even farther than no smartphone and eliminate email, as Donald Knuth did on January 1, 1990, after using email since ~1975-1989. His reasons for wanting long hours of uninterrupted concentration may well align with yours:

dandotway··on Genshin Impact made more money in its first year than any other game
Wow, imagine if a few years ago a startup said its game would earn billions despite forcing whale players who pay a fortune to still have to grind a level 2000-3000 times if they wanted the best artifacts. How many of us would have invested? The craziest things in this world are making people filthy rich. I've just now been learning about the NFT madness....
dandotway··on Genshin Impact made more money in its first year than any other game
One of the worst things about the freemium model is that the games tend to be very grindy time suckers those who don't pay-to-play. Millions of souls spend hours each day just farming in-game treasure and it actually ends up being work rather than fun. So many of these people are missing out on the joy of crafting or farming actual things in the real world and selling them on eBay or Etsy or locally. These grindy games in particular end up preying on millions of kids who don't have wads of cash, but do have free time and get sucked in. This is perhaps why addiction to games like Genshin Impact has gotten so severe in China that authorities have taken action to limit play hours.
dandotway··on What Would Jesus’s Resume Say? (2018)
> Head of Protestant Church, AD 1517-present

I wish there were a united Protestant Church, but there are only Protestant churches.

Perhaps by Church the author meant something more abstract like 'the hidden body of all believers in Christ'. But the author leaves out the Orthodox who split half a millennium before Luther. Perhaps the author thinks all those Russian Orthodox priests slaughtered by communists aren't hardcore Christian enough?

Now there is a Lutheran Church (1517-present). What has become of it in 500 years? The Lutheran Church of Sweden recently removed an alterpiece by a lesbian artist depicting two gay couples and a transsexual in the Garden of Eden because they thought the lesbian's depiction of transsexuals was offensive:

https://christianaction.org/top-stories-of-the-day/update-ga...

Does the author consider Jesus to be the head of this 1517-present Church?

> Head of Catholic Church, AD 31-1516

Now there is such a thing as the Catholic Church (1st century AD-present). Who heads it? Catholics recite at each Mass the Nicene Creed affirming the Lord Jesus Christ sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. They don't celebrate a "Head Lord Pope" at Mass. You also won't find the sort of artwork many modern Lutherans fancy in any Catholic churches because the Catholic Church is pastored by the Bishop of Rome[1] (1st century AD-present) who was originally the Apostle Peter, who was succeeded by St. Linus, who was succeeded by St. Anacletus, all the way down to Franciscus (2013-present), and this head pastor doesn't let individual parishes completely go to hell. (Pun intended.) Just as Christ promised Peter when he handed him the Keys of the Kingdom (Matt 16:17-19) [2].

Yes, scandals happen in all churches, good and bad, and plenty have happened in the Catholic Church, including scandals early enough to be recorded in the New Testament. In 1 Cor 5:1 [3] a church member is called out for sleeping with his mother-in-law. In Acts 5:1-10 [4] two hypocrites, Ananias and Saphira, who pretend to give a larger share of their wealth than they really did in order to boost their status within the church, are struck dead by God. (This is one of those rare New Testament passages that shows that the Old Testament God that smites people dead is also the New Testament God. See Acts 12:23 [5] for another example.)

TL;DR: there are over 2 billion Christians globally, spanning a 2000 year history since Christ walked the earth, but the author's insights about 'What Would Jesus Do' exclude most of them, but are perhaps at least inclusive enough to embrace the artistic tastes of certain 1517-present Lutherans.

dandotway··on Can helium be mixed with hydrogen to form a non-explosive mix? (2003)
Hydrogen Embrittlement[1] is not discussed in the link, an effect where hydrogen diffuses into metals and causes them to become brittle and crack. Many aerospace materials are especially vulnerable: high strength steels, nickel and titanium alloys, etc. Fueling a disposable balloon or rocket with hydrogen is one thing, but a vehicle that can safely be refilled with hydrogen over and over for decades is quite another. (Recall how the rust red Space Shuttle External Tank was not recycled like the white SRBs were and was the only large expendable component each launch.)

dandotway··on The metaverse is already here – it's Minecraft
This freedom to use old versions sounds good. But of Minecraft's 100M+ users, what percentage know this? What percentage just automatically update to the newest version and don't explore the mod scene?

I just read that Mojang added no opt-out telemetry to version 21w38a.[1]

How many Minecrafters are savvy enough to understand that this happened, and the long-term implications?

I initially tried to follow guides and "mods" to disable Win 10 telemetry but eventually gave up because MS changes how telemetry is disabled with every single update.

dandotway··on The metaverse is already here – it's Minecraft
This describes the current state of Minecraft, but Microsoft can tie new releases to new restrictions. The unknowing masses will adopt the new version without understanding the loss of freedom. Look at the success MS, Adobe, etc., have had getting people to pay rent each month for software like Office and Photoshop that they used to buy once and run forever.
dandotway··on The metaverse is already here – it's Minecraft
Does Minecraft go down for several days like Roblox does?

Does Minecraft ban/cancel people like PewDiePie as Roblox did?

Aren't monthly active users (MAU) around 100M for each?

I think Roblox is eventually doomed to slowly fizzle like Second Life, etc. Internet history is littered with the corpses of dead closed systems. Remember Compuserve, Prodigy, and AOL? Remember Myspace?

Microsoft might eventually, say, install mandatory AI inside Minecraft that forces all players to behaviorally conform to the social and political views of the most vocal group of Microsoft employees. Then some other immersive 3D world builder with more open rules of participation will send Minecraft to its grave.

dandotway··on Fundamentals of Piano Practice
Does this book cover how to figure out finger numbering for sheet music that doesn't have finger numbering?

By finger numbering I mean the standard scheme where thumb=1, index=2, ..., pinky=5, and the notes on the sheet music have these numbers.

This is the biggest mystery to me. I understand there is not a One True Canonical Fingering for a given sequence of notes. But some fingerings make the music much easier than others.

Wish some HN coder genius would write a program that given sheet music as input, outputs the top 1-3 recommended fingerings for that music with explanations for which rules were applied.

dandotway··on The metaverse is not bullshit

dandotway··on The metaverse is not bullshit
So why did the author of "No, The Metaverse is Not Bullshit" choose to present his thesis using mostly text with a few images? Would not using three.js to create a rich web 3D experience have been a more compelling argument for the future growth of rich web 3D experiences?

https://threejs.org/examples/

dandotway··on The metaverse is bullshit
Perhaps because politics is more of a mechanism for group totalitarianism than productive governance.
dandotway··on The metaverse is bullshit
Text is mightier than the Metaverse.

Kids can do video calls with their smartphones but prefer texting.

We could discuss Hacker News stories with video chat but we prefer text.

News and politics junkies prefer reading text tweets on Twitter to watching talking news anchors.

Once upon a time Amazon was a company that only sold books. Dried ink on dead trees. And in the early internet age this book seller outperformed many more "forward looking visionary" startups.

Billions and billions spent on making movies as polished as possible, yet "I thought the book was better" is what we always hear.

The Metaverse will be programmed with text.

The quarterly reports outlining its financial losses will be written in text.

When journalists ultimately write its obituary, they will write text.

dandotway··on The untold story of the world’s biggest nuclear bomb
Indeed, from the other comment about Teller's "Backyard" bomb it seems Kubrick's satire was more truth than fiction. The cigar smoking Ripper in the film was based on the real life Curtis LeMay, who it was later revealed really did want to start WWIII by bombing Russia, reasoning that America should strike before the Soviets developed effective retaliation, nipping the problem of Mutually Assured Destruction in the bud as it were.
dandotway··on The untold story of the world’s biggest nuclear bomb
I guess "truth is stranger than fiction." ;-) Blog comment from the link you posted:

The 10GT weapon really would have been BACKYARD. At 6MT/tonne (the upper bound for thermonuclear weapons) it would have weighed 1667 tonnes.

dandotway··on The untold story of the world’s biggest nuclear bomb

However, a study from 1963 suggested that, if detonated 28 miles
(45 kilometers) above the surface of the Earth, a 10,000-megaton
weapon could set fires over an area 500 miles (800 kilometers)
in diameter. Which is to say, an area about the size of France.
If thousands of such gigaton bombs were developed then MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction) would be more taxpayer efficient because we could simply stop funding expensive rocket and submarine weapons delivery systems, as they would only add an unnecessarily complicated step to the process. Just detonate your gigaton arsenal on your own nation's soil. When an animal is in great pain and cannot be saved, we usually consider the most compassionate course of action to euthanize. So in the event of MAD, just instantly vaporize your own population to spare them a few months of clinging to life with radiation sickness, starvation, cannibalism, and the lawless raping and murdering of the earth's final warlords. The multiple gigaton bombs detonated on your own soil will ensure the agonizing death of all your enemies that don't similarly self-euthanize.

dandotway··on Scientists recreated classic origin-of-life experiment and made a new discovery
TL;DR summary: The actual glass the lab flasks were made of mattered.

Miller's lab flasks were made of borosilicate glass and this caused more organic compounds to form than a more truly inert Teflon flask. But Earth's crust is over 90% silicates which could have similarly contributed to the formation of organic compounds in ancient pre-life earth.

dandotway··on Twenty-year truck driver: America’s “shipping crisis” will not end
> how about we reduce the need for so much international shipping in the first place?

Because China has 1.44 billion consumers and the USA only has 330 million, and companies like Apple in the long run can sell more iPhones in China because there are more people to buy them. The Chinese see Western brands as more desirable and authentic, much like many affluent Americans would prefer a foreign Mercedes to a domestic Cadillac.

Starting pay for Chinese workers assembling iPhones is $3.15 per hour[1].

China does not have as strong of environmental regulations so massive toxic lakes can be produced there extracting rare earths like neodymium[2].

Chinese women have more children than American women because in America we are constantly told the earth is overpopulated and man is destroying the climate, and in America we are told it is medieval for women to focus on being mothers who produce and raise children who ultimately become the workers and consumers that are a nation's true wealth. (The goose that lays golden eggs is more valuable than the golden eggs.) But if a woman enters the workforce today instead of having children her immediate production and consumption can improve this quarter's profits, whereas if she instead has 4 children who won't enter the workforce until two decades in the future, well, that's two decades in the future and here in the West investors won't wait two decades for returns.

So we must increasingly have non-American women give birth to the workers who make and consume Apple products and other Western brands.
