dancryer··on MacBook Pro with i9 chip is throttled due to thermal issues, claims YouTuber
I've had to do the same this summer in the UK. It's the first time we've had weather hot enough to trigger a problem, but it has been CRAWLING. :(
dancryer··on UK unveils extensive new plan to go all-electric by 2040
I do fear that cars are going to have the opposite problem to phones... Where Apple sacrifices battery life for unnecessary thin-ness, I fear car companies will sacrifice it for unnecessary speed and size.

Edit: and who knows what'll happen if Apple gets into the electric car business!

dancryer··on Ask Apple: Why Isn't Jony Ive the Face of the Company?
Isn't the answer simply that he doesn't want to be?

I'm sure I've seen him answer this question in interviews in the past.

dancryer··on Amazon delivery drivers complain about bad work conditions
It would prove tricky to do home deliveries at night when everyone's asleep...
dancryer··on Android 8.1 Oreo
How do you go about doing such a thing? My Nexus 9 could do with a new lease of life...
dancryer··on Atlassian launches Stride, its Slack competitor
Couldn't that be an opportunity though? Are you more likely to notice 'the new thing' from Atlassian, or when someone says "Woah, have you seen how much they've improved HipChat?"
dancryer··on Leadership Lessons from a Former Navy SEAL
Ha - Sorry if I sounded confrontational... I was actually agreeing with you.

As it happens, another great place to learn these skills is by volunteering with youth military cadet forces (in the UK, the Army, Air or Sea cadets.) I'm not sure how prevalent these are in the US? (I guess this is an example: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Cadet_Alliance)

dancryer··on Leadership Lessons from a Former Navy SEAL
Really, any branch of the military in any country in the world. They all teach the same.
dancryer··on Larry Page Deposition in Uber vs. Waymo
I got the impression that he was aware of it, but had no reason to remember the specifics of it. He knew it sounded about right, which is what I'd expect from a CEO months (or years) after the fact.
dancryer··on Apple acquires sleep tracking company Beddit
Good news - The next Apple Watch will be thinner!

Oh, you didn't ask for it to be thinner?

dancryer··on Apple acquires sleep tracking company Beddit
Do you never worry about missing a family emergency call? Like an accident or death or similar?

I don't accept general calls overnight, but I'd hate to miss the call.

dancryer··on Monzo’s Response to Cloudbleed
The other comments don't mention this, but it's also a new UK bank. They're going through the official approval process right now to be able to offer current accounts, overdrafts and so on.
dancryer··on Postmortem of database outage of January 31
Can't help but notice that the new backup monitoring tool suggests that the latest PGSQL backup is almost six days old...

Is that correct? http://monitor.gitlab.net/dashboard/db/backups?from=14859419...

dancryer··on Glazier: a text-based tool for automated installation of Windows
Presumably this tool is not for Windows sysadmins, it's for Linux/Unix sysadmins who also have to manage some Windows machines...
dancryer··on Netflix's gamble pays off as subscriptions soar
We did this - Cancelled Sky in favour of Netflix + Now TV's Entertainment bundle.

Not looked back, despite the many, many calls from Sky.

dancryer··on Donald Trump is the president-elect of the U.S.
In part at least, because two of those countries are NATO members and thus all other NATO members have a duty to protect them.
dancryer··on Co-founder problem. Pls vote
I'd suggest you have a long, detailed, open and honest conversation with this person about the future of your company and your working relationship. Part of being a responsible co-founder is dealing with problems head on, and finding a way to work through them.

It strikes me that if you can't see a third option: Working with this co-founder to improve your collective situation, then the company has already failed and you may as well move on.

dancryer··on Apple is killing the headphone jack
I've had no problems with USB-C on my Nexus 5x, personally. Certainly 100x better than Micro USB.

I don't think as a connector it has the polish of the lightning adapter, but I also don't think it would be a disaster if Apple switched to using it.

dancryer··on Docker for Mac Beta Review
Docker ID: dancryer

I'd love to test this out as a replacement for the Vagrant + VirtualBox set up we use currently to manage the development of PHPCI. :)

Thanks!

dancryer··on Bidding farewell to Google Code
I really love the branch-level access control on Bitbucket. Being able to say that developers A,B,C have access to the repo, but only A can push to master, is incredibly useful.
dancryer··on Ban Internet Explorer (UK Petition)
A better petition would have been to ban <IE10 use within Government organisations.

There's no way in the world that the Govt. could ban IE outright.

dancryer··on Ask HN: How do you like my PHP side projects?
Should have mentioned, we're on Github, of course: https://github.com/block8/phpci
dancryer··on Ask HN: How do you like my PHP side projects?
Hey Aruggirello - I'm one of the core developers of PHPCI (https://www.phptesting.org)

I really like the sound of #1. Would you consider building a PHPCI plugin for it? I think it would be quite popular, especially the version targeting reporting.

dancryer··on Why do managers prefer ONSITE developers?
There's a big part of it that is based on the incorrect assumption that if someone is in the office 9-5, they are working 9-5. That and the ability to directly monitor people, interrupt them whenever you want to, and so on.

The other part of it is slightly more understandable, which is to enable you to collaborate better with the other members of the team. Developers are often more likely to turn to someone they are sat near and bounce an idea off them than they are to write a question in an email, IM or chat room.

dancryer··on Ask HN: Why does Amazon allow multiple accounts with the same email address?
Thanks dalke, that's really interesting...

I can only imagine the number of heated arguments this has caused internally for Amazon!

dancryer··on Facebook Hit With Lawsuit: Could This Spell The End Of The Social Giant?
The link is broken. :(
dancryer··on Colorado Needs Developers
Why don't employers in Colorado consider offering more remote working positions? Employees that enjoy their Colorado-based job might be more inclined to consider relocating....
dancryer··on Ask HN: is PHPstorm worth the price, over Aptana?
I would say yes. PHP Storm, if nothing else, is a lot more system friendly for me than any other IDE I have tried (incl. Aptana, Zend Studio, Netbeans, etc.)
dancryer··on What's the deal with gmail's new favicon?
I noticed that on one of my accounts the other day... I thought it was just a quirk in Chrome on my machine.

No idea why the change. :s

dancryer··on Show HN: We built this so startups don't waste time raising money
It seems like a good idea - but the site as it stands now doesn't give me any confidence that any VCs will actually see proposals, and even if they do, that they would take it seriously. Are any VCs on board currently?

You need to find some way to get way more information into the pitches... For example financials, forecasts, a plan. I can't imagine ever investing in something based solely on a short, free-form text pitch (and I'm not a VC.)

Also just a little note on tone - going back to my first point, I'm not sure any VC would take kindly to the idea of "Get Spammed" - You might also want to be careful with your test data ("some rich fart" for example) lest you put off any VCs that happen to see this whilst it is on HN.

Hope that helps. :)
