damncabbage··on Uber Drivers Protest Outside the Company’s San Francisco Headquarters
“Uber chooses to call us partners for their tax benefit. If they called us employees, they’d have to cover us all,” said Alazzeh.
damncabbage··on A story about Vienna. (an interactive narrative infographic)
He's saying that he's Australian, and he's heard from other of his countrymen that Vienna is kind of alright. :)

(Don't we, we get equally worried when people mix it up.)

damncabbage··on Confessions of A Job Destroyer
After finding some way to be retrained. And good luck getting back into the job market if you're 50 and have been displaced from an industry you've worked in for most of your life.

(It creates new jobs, but it doesn't necessarily mean the displaced get those new jobs.)

damncabbage··on SimCity Burning: A Warning to Publishers on The Dangers of Always-Online DRM

I wouldn't be too terribly shocked if people just sucked it
up and bought it anyway as long as the servers are stable.
Agreed. I have a couple of friends who are avoiding it, but I have colleagues that are going to get the game anyway despite whinging about EA being terrible.

(The above is anecdotal at best, but my gut feeling is that this will hurt EA in more than the very short term. See also: Blizzard with Diablo 3.)

damncabbage··on Why are payment forms so complicated?
Doesn't work with iOS; hitting Next on the popup keyboard immediately jumps without giving the chance for the select's change event to fire.

(Bad first-hand experience looking for work-arounds.)

Clearly EA suffered dearly for it, and have made sure never to repeat the mistake. :(
damncabbage··on Ruby 2.0.0 Released

damncabbage··on Yahoo CEO Mayer Now Requiring Employees to Not Be Remote
When I worked there, I took the job because of the flexible work-from-home-when-you want policy, which I hadn't encountered for.

I'd certainly be feeling baited-and-switched right now if I hadn't already left.

damncabbage··on Song of GitHub

damncabbage··on Things I found on GitHub: shell history
Versioning their home directories to git, and doing it in-place instead of linking specific files from a ~/.dotfiles or similar.

(See https://github.com/technicalpickles/homesick for an example of how to do it right.)

damncabbage··on Halo Creator Unveils Its Next Masterpiece, a Persistent Online World
If it's anything like Yahoo! when I was there, they're resisting that because refreshing the page for every image displays another set of ads.

(It's 2005-era thinking, but the metrics for some ad networks are [or at least were] skewed to invite abuse of that metric.)

damncabbage··on How to Learn JavaScript Properly
PHP is terrible, but the following now is valid PHP:

  $addOne = function($a){ return $a + 1 };
  $result = array_map($addOne, array(1,2,3)); // now [2,3,4]
Or:

  // Reference to intval() function.
  $result = array_map(intval, array('1','2','a'));

So who gets to decide what's a half-truth, a lie by omission, or just well-intentioned but insufficiently detailed?

damncabbage··on A Wired.com reporter was first to register mcdonalds.com (1994)
Great quote:

The guy in registration? One person is responsible for assigning domain names on the Internet?

Actually, "We have 2.5 people doing it," Williamson said, meaning that the half person is really a full person doing it part-time. Or something. Regardless, 2.5 humans is not enough people, or parts of people, to do the job. (Would one person be assigning quit-claims to a gold rush?)

damncabbage··on StackExchange Founder Vows to Reinvent Online Discourse
But conversations are nested anyway. In real life you rarely have discussions with more than ten people at once. Even when you do, it's frustrating as you have to switch between topics instead of following the "threads" of the conversation. (And inevitably someone doesn't shut up and derails the conversation in a particular way.)

So what do current systems do?

* Go for broke, go full threading (eg. HN, Reddit, Usenet).

* Ignore it (eg. phpBB). Just like real life, everything gets muddied, but you have far more people in the conversation that would be practical in reality.

* Track it but try to hide it (eg. Twitter). Discussions have tree structures, but you can only have a flat view of them. You have to manually sift through replies to find the branching points and then trace it from there.

For example, these are two discussion trees branching from the same conversation starter:

https://twitter.com/lgarvey/status/279088834115940352

https://twitter.com/nitecoder/status/279088173743747072

In any case, I suspect Discourse's threading mostly stems from Jeff Atwood's dislike of threading: http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/2012/12/web-discussions-fla...

damncabbage··on 1% of CMS-Powered Sites Expose Their Database Passwords (2011)
You're right; on reflection, version control has nothing to do with it (besides a .gitignore with wp-config-anything ignore entries). I used to use a wp-config.php file in a shared directory on the server that gets symlinked in by Capistrano during deployments; there's no way to accidentally create new .swo/.bkp/.whatever files in production without both screwing up the Capistrano recipe and wp-config.php file creation.

(It seems I skipped actually writing something useful and went straight to durr version control, sorry.)

Points A) and C) are dead on. Addressing your point B), though:

Yes, it is commodity software. But most seem to use at least some plugins and themes, and making changes to those without a rollback is a nightmare. You can make backups before changing things, sure, but version control has that already built in.

(Sibling posts to yours point out that Wordpress looks in both the docroot and one level up for wp-config.php - if I ever manage a Wordpress site again I'll be sure to move it out.)

damncabbage··on Show HN: Pick a better background pattern for your website
This is really timely and really damn useful. The bookmarklet in particular is great. Nice work!
damncabbage··on 1% of CMS-Powered Sites Expose Their Database Passwords (2011)
> Also I'd say the blame if you can assign any is on Vim, Emacs, Gedit, and Nano

... Or the guy who is just editing files directly on the server (or shovelling everything up with FTP), instead of sane version control.

(I'm not sure anyone doing the former can be counted as "Pro", WP or otherwise.)

damncabbage··on Pirate Bay Founder Could Be Prosecuted For Hacking “Within a Month”
From pathy, who appears to be hellbanned:

Just a reminder: This case is not related to his Pirate Bay involvement. He is accused of hacking Logica, who handles data for the Swedish Tax Authority.

How much empathy would you have if someone, not involved in TPB, 'stole' information about you from your local tax authority? Especially Americans who seem to be paranoid about their tax stuff (For example Romney). At least in Sweden your tax data is pretty much public - when requested from the Tax Authority.

As a side note: This is also true for privately held companies in Sweden, all annual reports are pretty much public. You can for example view Mojang's (Minecraft) figures here: http://www.allabolag.se/5568192388/Mojang_AB

damncabbage··on Show HN: Vinepeek - watch the world in realtime in 6 second snippets
Just a novelty that will fade off. I cant see any useful purpose for 6 second clips in a social wide audience context.

As much as I dislike them, I also think they'll take off.

I can see them as another Instagram-like "useless" thing that is none-the-less popular because it's quick, illustrative and requires little effort. Think an animated GIF-like snapshot of your day.

(Bah humbug, etc.)
