damm··on Ask HN: Help (no life thread)
The only way you can get a raise really right now is to quit your job and find a new job that's willing to pay you more.

This has been happening for quite some time you can blame neoliberalism or you can blame CEO's who earn more. There's some truth to every lie.

So yes you will get a lot of jobs; and quit a lot of jobs. It sucks; it stinks; I remember when I was making 13$/hr and excited. It may not excite you but it should pay the bills.

Work on your startup on the side and keep trying

Life is about hard work; it's never easy. Keep striving

> This is the hardest thing to do sometimes you will stumble

damm··on TimescaleDB vs. InfluxDB: built differently for time-series data
Sure Postgresql can handle doing metrics; been doing it for 2 years without any timescaledb.

I also use influxdb. Different tools for different purposes

damm··on [dead]
Bad timing for those in America.
damm··on Scaling StatsD at DoorDash
Kind of a disappointing read; guess I've scaled past them.

I was doing over 1 Million Metrics every 60s; I big problem I always found wasn't statsd. It was carbon.

Once you configure carbon on a big enough host with the right tools (haproxy is great here) you can really scale.

damm··on Ask HN: 55 years old and no experience, am I too old to get a job?
> I came here to say this. It's a big deal. It proves that you can write quality code and work with a team. It's also trendy, which doesn't hurt.

Absolutely. If were a model with a portfolio with no pictures in it; you won't get hired.

So it has to be full; of valid content you can share. People want to see it.

Otherwise you won't be taken as seriously

damm··on Zero Downtime Cloud Infrastructure at Grubhub
I'm kind of sorry I read this; thought maybe I could learn or ..

Not even technical and like in the disclaimer they're not open sourcing anything.

damm··on Herb: Multi-DC Replication Engine for Uber’s Schemaless Datastore
Go ahead and downvote this; but where's the source?

Otherwise isn't this pointless bragging?

damm··on Ask HN: How do you know that the team you're interviewing with are smart?
You don't; unless you talk to each of them and try and figure out if they are worth their salt. You should assume they don't know anything until proven otherwise.
damm··on [dead]
Most people would agree who live in Washington that they don't care; because they don't pay income tax either.

If the system needs to change; then the people who are elected need to change things.

Every state has different tax laws; Oregon has no sales tax but has an income tax. Some states tax more heavily. Should we start outing those states that Citizens can pay over 50% in taxes depending on their locality?

Articles like this make Trump's Fake news comment work...

damm··on Ask HN: How do you keep checklists?

damm··on What Elon Musk Should Learn from the Thailand Cave Rescue
Decent attempt to say what I've been saying. These Billionaires think they are John Wayne or Bruce Wayne (or worse).
damm··on Elon Musk promises to fix Flint's water wherever it's needed
Does Elon Musk think he's Batman now?
damm··on Intel CEO Resigns
Right it can also be seen as a power play to be dating your superior.

But I still hate to see a company policy stop 2 people from loving each other. The intelligent thing however would be for 1 person to quit the company and work in a different company.

damm··on Intel CEO Resigns
A relationship? you don't think that Meltdown / Spectre didn't have something to do with it as well?

I would hope that Meltdown / Specture / the recent TLB Cache yeah Intel would be in a world of hurt over that.

2 Adults should be able to get it on without a problem

damm··on Zen Magnets: 6 Years of Battle End in Victory
the CPB is dying under Trump. So it's not really a victory; but i'm sure they are happy they can sell their magnetic balls of death.

> I bought a pair of bucky balls; it was fun but once you start loosing them and if you have pets... best not to buy them

small enough that it's easy to loose

damm··on No: Body: Wants: To: Write: – YAML
What a stupid argument that is not worth the time.
damm··on Firefox Is Back. It’s Time to Give It a Try
Is this a joke? Some of us left Firefox for a reason.

They lost my trust and have not earned it back yet.

damm··on Welcome to Fedora CoreOS
Eh I used CoreOS because I wanted a minimal distro that just provided docker. I'm sure they'll try and tailor Fedora Core to do the same thing.

It's just that it's Fedora; it's my allergic reaction to running redhat software I guess.

damm··on Microsoft Buys GitHub: The Linux Foundation's Reaction
I think what I don't appreciate is how many people are trying to calm peoples fears about the acquisition.

Feels like a parent chiding a kid

I guess Github was in worse shape than they looked like on the outside. Happens; the fact that the 3 founders made a fortune off of this is unfortunate.

One of those founders stepped down and yet he still won.

It's just a game; wether you play blackjack or poker or big stakes with companies.

damm··on Gitea, a fork of Gogs and a painless self-hosted Git service
I don't think i'll use a self-hosted Git Service that does not eat it's own dog food.

Just smells bad; makes you think their product is so bad enough they don't even use it.

damm··on If you're worried about the GitHub acquisition, here's what to look out for
Github searches your code to index it so you can be able to use the search box to find things.

Everyone searches your code; because if you upload child porn it needs to be detected and removed.

Maybe this is unfortunate but the only way to own your data is to self host.

damm··on Inbox of employees
I can speak from experience that the inbox is the property of the company. Worked at many company's who would commonly just disable the email account to login and forward all new email to a manager (or ceo/whatever).

This is also true with any computer that they gave you.

> I'm not a lawyer so I can't speak for the legality of this.

But if you are talking about a company's email server that you have an account on. It's the private property of the company likely.

damm··on Ask HN: Isn't it sad that till this day we pay credit card fees per transaction?
Because in the end it's all about making money off of people trying to buy things.

Sure you could say the cost is justified to run the credit card network and keep it secure. I hope they really do.

damm··on Goodbye, XMPP
there was someone who wrote a message bus ruby gem using xmpp.

Sure there are better message bus options now adays but you know people do crazy things... specially rubyists

damm··on About ZFS Performance
The trend of crappy posts from Percona continues they must want attention suddenly.

Percona was best at consulting; their DBA's were worth it. The software maybe close to irrelevant now but not their DBA's.

damm··on There are real reasons for Linux to replace ifconfig, netstat, etc
If only ifconfig was standardized on the output... it's output has changed over time

Let alone the non-conformity of other OS's like Solaris, HP-UX which really might not matter now. I'm sure FreeBSD matters to someone... just not me

damm··on Goodbye, XMPP
Goodbye XMPP you could have been amazing but you got relegated to chat and that's how you died.
damm··on Steve Mnuchin: Officials should take a serious look at tech monopolies
If trump tries to trim down the monopolies it will only be in his favor.

I still won't mind because Microsoft faced a pretty big case over IE. It could do that behavior now and no one would stop them. Sure Firefox would care but I don't use their software anymore.

Breaking up Google would be a great start; then tackle the print giants and TV giants (oh and radio if it still exists)

Sinclair however makes trump happy so they are the first I'd like to see broken up.

damm··on Xero reveals the impact of mammoth Amazon Web Services migration
Most managed hosting providers have some form of Openstack or an API to provision baremetal servers or something similar.

It is easy to sit back and say AWS is really easy; but it just means you haven't looked elsewhere.

Additionally most public clouds have law enforcement or government entities monitoring or tracking things (to an unknown scale). You are always better off in a regular datacenter.

If you don't know why maybe you should hire someone to tell you why.

> Free answers are good. But if you want great answers you have to pay.

damm··on Xero reveals the impact of mammoth Amazon Web Services migration
and in 6 months they can turn around and claim they will save 30% of their hosting costs by migrating to bare metal.

It's just a game to keep VC's and other people happy.

Hey ma! look I cut our costs by 25%
