damianknz··on New Zealand's Tectonic Dragon Awakens
LOL, we still have AOS, SIS, GCSB, AVSEC and of relevance to this article, EQNZ.
damianknz··on SpaceX plans worldwide satellite Internet with low latency, gigabit speed
But also bear in mind that the all the satellites over New Zealand (for example) will be wasted while we are asleep and at any given time a lot of satellites will be over empty ocean (sending 4K Netflix to cruise ships maybe).

I';; also counteract may own argument as to numbers with the idea that 16 million people could really mean 16 million households if they watch the movie together :-)

damianknz··on SpaceX plans worldwide satellite Internet with low latency, gigabit speed
You'll get around that in your home by having the satellite module thing up on your roof and a cable to your wifi router.

What I don't understand about this though is the number of frequencies available to connect to all these satellites and how it might extend to ~300 million people (let alone a billion potentially).

damianknz··on Why's poignant guide to Ruby [pdf]
I have started reading this after doing https://www.railstutorial.org/book to fill in some gaps in my own knowledge. It is very amusing (and very poignant). Full credit to the author. (Is it who I think it is?)
damianknz··on Windows Hello face recognition is vulnerable to the Jedi mind trick
I have Windows Hello enabled on my phone (a 950) and it scans my iris with an infra-red camera/light. This means it still works in the dark and cant be fooled by a photo (or a 3d model I guess!)
damianknz··on Microsoft Finds Cancer Clues in Search Queries
Can't one already run ad campaigns based on a users search history? What if a cancer foundation or similar organisation ran a targeted ad campaign?
damianknz··on Are We Living in a Computer Simulation?
Are you referring to the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle? Of course, that still doesn't mean we're necessarily in a simulation!
damianknz··on The median of a trillion numbers
If you know the range of numbers then I'd do a binary search. Get each server to count how many are higher or lower. Play the high low game. When the two totals are the same you're done. I think this covers the authors edge cases too. :-)
damianknz··on A number that fascinates physicists
Also, I tend to move around while my desk stays still, so from my desks point of view I am not aging as fast.
damianknz··on Show HN: Space Shooter in QBasic
I was very fortunate to get an Amstrad 6128 when I was 12. A big expense in New Zealand 29 years ago 8-). It came with a huge manual with lots of example programs to type in. Amstrad basic was a cool language with commands like move 0,0; draw 320,200; rem a line from corner to corner; and even while/wend.
damianknz··on Jade, Node.js template engine, is being forced to rename due to trademark
I miss 4GL (and Vim) (and Christchurch).
damianknz··on The Implementation of Functional Programming Languages (1987)
If you've done some Scheme (or Lisp (or Haskell (or Curry))) then you will find this very readable. Section 2.4 has a good explanation of the Y combinator. I'm going to try and get through the whole book.
damianknz··on Superoptimizing Compilers
At first I thought the super-optimizer had made a mistake because the results are not the same but I think the error is in the original where line 6 should be

return -1;

Anyway, using assembler for CPU I made up in my head just now, how about

shl r0,1

and r0,1

damianknz··on Microsoft Makes Clever Moves
Hi, Here is what I like: It was $95 in New Zealand. It has a quad core processor. It comes with Office. Live tiles and they way you can move then and resize them is just nice. The OS only takes up 2.2 GB Other apps seem to need much less space, like about half the space and they can be installed on an SD card which I haven't even got because I don't need one. I'm a C# programmer by day so there's that too.
damianknz··on Microsoft Makes Clever Moves
I made the switch from an Android Sony to a Lumia 530 this Christmas. Apart from the LCD TN screen the Lumia is easily the best phone I've ever had at half the price.
damianknz··on Microsoft Band
I suspect thats so it can measure your pulse better. Its also more private if it displays text messages.
damianknz··on Show HN: Run dedicated iOS Simulators in the browser
hang on. im stuck here.

damianknz··on Windows 8 Pro on a phone
This article is 18 months old, 4.7" doesn't seem that big now and CPU's are a bit further ahead. I wonder what happened to them? I want one.
damianknz··on 500m Lines of Code Suggests Healthcare.gov Will Not Be Fixed Anytime Soon
I wonder if the reporter has not mixed up lines of code with database records. Perhaps the database has a record for each and every American and 5 million of those records have incorrect data and need to be fixed up so that those people can use the website?
damianknz··on The Unitarihedron: The Jewel at the Heart of Quantum Computing
The article is definitely satirical and points out the futility of any -Hedron based device regardless of its theoretical truth. You can't calculate the volume of a fractal in fact some fractals can be proved to have zero volume!
damianknz··on Possibly the worst Facebook ad ever
I got through and read the article as well as an earlier one. They are worth reading if you have daughters, they're compulsory if you have sons.
damianknz··on How The Art of Computer Programming was ruined for me
Don't let the page numbering ruin these books for you as the contents will provide you enjoyment for the rest of your life. Its great that you were able to get your own copy of them. At university in New Zealand TAOCP was on the recommended reading list for CompSci but the library only had one of each volume. You could only get them out for _3 hours_ at a time. Years later I was in a bookstore with my girlfriend a the time and I saw the 3 volume set for _$NZ 500_. She secretly went back the next day and brought them for me for my birthday. We are now married.
damianknz··on Nokia acquired by Microsoft
How about: Microkia Softnok
damianknz··on On Lisp
Cheers to PG for making this available.
