damiankennedy··on Kim Dotcom's new Mega project
Yes, its illegal here too unless he filed a registered prospectus somehow.
damiankennedy··on Kim Dotcom's new Mega project
Kiwi here and the rumour is that this new venture breaks his parole so back to the little jail cell with a mouldy mattress for him. We're not fans of people that try and bribe/blackmail our politicians here.
damiankennedy··on First Windows 8 ads leak
I dont know what the people in these ads are doing.
damiankennedy··on Fed Announces Open Ended QE3
Yes exactly, and that makes the boomerang you borrowed to buy your house seem smaller.
damiankennedy··on Fed Announces Open Ended QE3
It is effectively money printing which will lead to inflation but that does not mean it is the wrong thing to do. Inflation over time balances out old debt with new income.
damiankennedy··on Who does cut the wood? (a meditation on Object Oriented Design)
This is a good example if you also include a Saw class and an Axe class. Saw and Axe implement ICutter and IUsable. The Tree class implements ICuttable. Then Worker class calls ICutter.cut(ICuttable)
damiankennedy··on Space Infographic - Keep scrolling & reach 13 billion miles from earth
that was heaps more meaningful than the bbc one
damiankennedy··on So I baked a Sony Vaio today...
LOL. I misread and thought he put the whole laptop in and the tinfoil was what was left of the casing.
damiankennedy··on Your Nasty, Nerdy Sexism Isn’t Cute
@Boboblong Trolls are normally depicted as males. Your argument has many counter examples Lovelace, Curie and Nightingale.
damiankennedy··on Gabe Newell: Windows 8 will make people "rage quit computing"
Regardless of whether you agree with GN or not some of the commenters make good points and I wonder if MS in choosing style over substance arent making the sames mistake as New Coke. The original Xerox vision was always multiple windows placed side by side and each program doing a specific task and program to program comunication. OSX was doing the besg job at this with a good amount of style to boot. Now with this new MUI you cant even launch a program without covering up the whole screen. Perhaps they should call it Curtains.
damiankennedy··on How To Get Bitcoins
So where can I buy some magic beans ;-)
damiankennedy··on Predicting War
I read a book by a man from Israel who was a soldier during the 6-day war. The night before, everyone on leave was picked up by young females in unmarked cars and taken back to base. Of course, in that war the entire army was mobilised. That might be done again as a precaution but this time I don't think anyone will know until the day after. I for one, hope they don't do it at all.
damiankennedy··on Could Microsoft’s new Surface tablet really cost only $199? We’re skeptical
As this price ($199~=$250NZ) they wont be able to make them fast enough which is exactly the kind of marketing MSFT needs. Lets say they lose $300 on each device. That means the can sell 80 million a year and still be profitable. That would give them 20% market share! Steve Balmer should put himself in the ads too, his ads were great when Windows first came out. I'd definitely buy one because it will run Office and Visual Studio right? I mean they wouldn't dilute the Windows brand with a Windows but not actual Windows device, that would be crazy. And the new Modern UI (moo-ey), its so colourful. (I love #A05000).
damiankennedy··on Why Windows Phone 7 Will Never Take Off
I have to agree. Despite being a fill-time C# programmer I spent many evenings trying to get something working in WP7. It was far easier (and more fun) to pick-up Java and start android programming.

damiankennedy··on Google Indefinitely Delays the Nexus Q After Poor Reviews
They're in a chain of stores in New Zealand called Warehouse Stationary.

The device itself plugs into the TV's HDMI slot and looks like an oversize memory stick. I then put in my home wifi details just like you would on a phone. Then with apps like kies you can link to any other android phone or vice versa. The family windows box isn't turned on most days and when it is it just continuously downloads updates and spins the hard disk.

I'm confused. Why would you get one of these instead of an Android TV?

My Android TV running ICS was only 135 $NZ and I got a wireless keyboard for 70 $NZ. Now my kids play Angry Birds Space and Justin Bieber videos on TV!

damiankennedy··on Ask PG: What caused the downtime?
That would be my guess as well. Although I am really pleased Codecademy has Python now.

edit: removed the 'A'

damiankennedy··on The Go-Nowhere Generation
I couldn't disagree more. How many people are there making Apple and Android apps now? How about the "Connected Generation"
damiankennedy··on Kaspersky: Duqu Trojan uses 'unknown programming language'
Maybe they just embedded something like RTOS-32. The company that makes it (www.On-Time.com) say it can be integrated with Visual Studio and used along side Visual C++.
