Do you know the acronym ABM? If you're not a native German speaker, probably not. Arbeitsbeschäftigungsmaßnahme. Docker, k8s ... it's all there to employ the unemployed. Also to make something simple complicated so Cloud providers can monetize even this part and lock you in and bill you 10fold for something that really isn't that expensive

dalu··on Ask HN: Anyone else burnt out due to extended lockdown and work-from-home?
When ever I read job ads and it says pair programming I click next.

I would hate to do that. Idk how you can. I have this imagination of the partner either being a super need Hipster smartassing over everything or a real Dumbo. In both cases they would drive me blood pressure up.

dalu··on Ask HN: Anyone else burnt out due to extended lockdown and work-from-home?
I can't stomach Facebook friends posting conspiracy theories and them even getting likes on those. I explode. I've written a ranting website just for that purpose, to not fecate over Facebook but on my on ranting service, which apparently only I seem to be using. 1 such idiot post and I snooze the person for 30 days. My mental health is more important than his freedom of expression.
dalu··on Ask HN: Anyone else burnt out due to extended lockdown and work-from-home?
I've been living like this for the last 16 years and longer actually.

You have to listen to yourself.

I came up with this way. Sometimes I work for 3 weeks even and especially weekends. I'm super productive there, then all of a sudden I lose interest. Then I start playing games. Anything that's fun. Until one day I'm bored of that and get back to work. In both cases I treat it like a game. The work game and the game game. However especially if income is low, I push myself to work. It's not a game then but a fight against my own will.

I had a bad relationship breakup. She cheated and I was very hurt. She made sure I lose all my friends. All those I cared about anyway. In that time coding was my way out of hurt and depression. Focusing every day on progress of one project and seeing it grow. That one project made me about 150k€ and gave me back the self-esteem she destroyed.

Compared to that COVID19 lockdowns are light fruit cakes.

I go outside and walk at least 45min a day. You can't sit at home all day. You need to go outside.

You at least are employed and in a safe situation earning your income and sure about that. I work and don't know if I'll ever see a single cent from the work I'm doing. The project I finish today may or may not take off in 3 years (earlier if I spend money on advertising)

dalu··on How I Build Web Apps As A Freelancer
I'm on the fence. After AngularJS, where all the work I had put into creating reusable components, all of a sudden it was gone, superceded by Angular. Everything from scratch, now with Typescript. And then I was trying flutter and it was great but also, like Angular, half-assed and not there. Then I had a period of writing everything in plain JS and embedding that in SSR pages served by Go. No reactivity :( But great SEO :) Now I found quasar, the promise is write once, deliver on all platforms. I prefer Angular to Vue but it doesn't have anything like Quasar and the Material components are lacking. vuex-orm, despite being new has more functionality out the box than ngrx-data. If you go SSR with JS there is a huge performance impact vs Go (read cost in hardware). Another downside of quasar is since it's all just a Webview on mobile you can't use grpc to communicate. grpc-web uses base64 encoding on the payload, which makes it useless. You can't use nginx on the front with grpc-web. But then again I can make it work with a RESTful backend and a websocket notifier. I would love reactivity on the frontend but SEO is more important. Adsense doesn't monetize Angular sites, says they have no content. So IDK... On the backend I write monoliths. Go is powerful enough to serve about 400 million visitors on commodity hardware, a single server. I had a cluster of 3 but it was too much effort maintaining them. Every now and then something would break. Ipsec or whatever. So I got rid of it. 1 server with raid10 and daily backups. Like I wrote Go wins on the backend. The frontend wars are undecided for me yet. I'm just one guy so I'll go with quasar and vue for now, despite my love for Angular. Also Angular is Google as is Flutter. And with Google you can't be sure they won't arbitrarily just end support one day to the next because Google's CEO felt like it today. I would love if Svelte had the tools. React, I tried getting into it but since it's so popular there are also many half-assed libs. Take their material ui. Yeah it looks nice on the outside but when you're about to use it boobytraps everywhere. Maybe one time I'll make the jump from vue to react idk. Maybe one day there will be something like Quasar for react. Idk.

I don't like the ae... guy there. Some arrogant German youngster. When I asked him a question about a workflow he told me that there's commercial support. Yeah screw you too. Mostly happy with keycloak, don't need no hydra and greedy pseudo open source disguised payware
dalu··on Qbix: An OSS Facebook alternative, with videoconferencing, chats, events, payments
ok

- I don't like that the backend is in PHP. PHP is expensive to scale out. You advertise it as the Facebook killer but how can you kill Facebook with something that can't handle more than about 50 concurrent requests per commodity hardware server.

- I don't really know what it is. There's a short video that says you can do this and that but you don't show how you do it. In your mind it all makes sense. As someone coming to this repo I read it's an OS, then it's not an OS it's a PHP script with a JS frontend. It uses MySQL and I think MySQL performance and scaling. Not a good experience.

- Over the top sales pitch. You claim things that just aren't true. You're trying to sell it as freedom from Facebook and Google. Yeah I bet it does have many features, but why do I need it? What do I use it for? Why would I use it and not the other thing? Don't lie to me (It's an OS it's not an OS). I'm a technical guy and I see you're trying to blow it up so it's bigger than it actually is. Oh you can sign up everywhere? What's so special about that? The whole sales pitch it doesn't target me. It reads like one big ad of bullshit someone is trying to sell me.

Maybe you're just too smart for me and I'm not smart enough. I don't want to offend you. I know it's hard taking criticism for something you've spent the last 2+ years working on to get smashed in negative feedback because people don't understand your vision.

The only use case I saw was this yang2020. So ok it's script to promote politicians. Should I ever run a political campaign or know someone who does, I'll consider it. Right now I don't really know what it is you've built. Yet Another Social Network?

dalu··on Qbix: An OSS Facebook alternative, with videoconferencing, chats, events, payments
I would rather not post what I think, because I don't like being the bringer of bad news. I'll just say that a lot of effort went into the sales pitch.
dalu··on Which smartphone, laptop and tablet brands break down the most?
Lenovo. Or let's put it like this: The hardware works but the software isn't getting updated so despite the hardware still working the tablet is unusable.

Same with Samsung or really any smartphone or tablet.

It's all built to fail so you have to spend another absurd amount of money on the next thing 4 years later.

dalu··on Matomo: Open-source analytics platform
Node? For handling large amounts of requests? What did I miss? lol sorry but I had to laugh.

I couldn't find any benchmarks. How many concurrent requests can it handle without errors, simple hello world.

Never mind I found a post. https://blog.rh-flow.de/2016/01/10/benchmark-helloworld-in-p...

As expected node is not a thing to handle large amounts of requests

dalu··on Matomo: Open-source analytics platform
Matomo doesn't track all that much. Screen size, which is wrong for Firefox vs Chrome. Visit time and unique user and visit ID. Also some ecommerce parameters if you set them. As well as if your browser supports whatever tech like flash, silverlight etc. It's a slightly better server log.
dalu··on Matomo: Open-source analytics platform
I started writing a backend in Go. So far it parses the request, turns it into a struct and saves it to mongodb. However 2 requests per page are recorded, no idea why that happens. One has 24 or 25 fields filled, the next 15-19 fields.

Anyhow that's as far as I got. The next and largest step would be analyzing those records aka creating all those beautiful graphs. Also creating a management interface for sites and generation of tracking code. While it's open source (search for gopiwik) it still uses the mgo.v2 driver and I just yesterday added go module support and did some minor changes.

I thought, why reinvent the wheel, let's just grab the piwik.js and build a receiver. Turns out it's a bit more complicated than that.

dalu··on Poll: Switching from WhatsApp
I use Telegram because in the Linux group on Google+ it was advertised as the better messenging alternative, and a while ago Russia wanted access to their data and when they refused some IPs were blocked by the Russian government.

Idk if that was just a market trick or if it was real.

In Telegram you don't get censored. But it lacks the essential blocking people feature.

dalu··on A half-hour to learn Rust
See this is what I'm talking about. This is ridiculous.
dalu··on A half-hour to learn Rust
Rust is a language that just doesn't go into my head. And whenever I have a question the community either downvotes or ignores me. The readability is bad. The error messages don't make sense. This type of post only covers the syntax basics. There's nowhere to turn to for applied concepts.

It's like Ultima Online back in the day. Everyone loved it but every time I tried i fell asleep and just couldn't get into it.

I'm semi happy with Go. It's a hands on language that is fast enough. But it's missing elegance and something I can't put my finger on is missing.

But Rust, it feels like a step back. What do I think in? Boxes? Wrap unwrap move what? It's so hipster I just hate it. And compilation takes a lot of resources and time. Hell, Java makes more sense to me than Rust.

And why all those macros? And impl for order is backwards. Why couldn't the word class be used, no they just want to be different for the sake of being different. It's a language for hipster rebels without a cause.

dalu··on What service do you dislike using but keep using anyway?
Facebook because of its hypocrisy and censorship but all the contacts are there and some even insist on it. I hate Facebook so much. The rose colored glasses or gtfo policy.

I also hate Steam for this reason where you can't voice your opinion or you'll get banned. I've reached a 1 year ban now just for speaking my mind. Valve and its double standards or rather anti consumer mods have absolute power and Valve won't do anything about it, even if the mod banned someone by mistake.

And finally my bank. They decided to up the price from 3€/month to 8€ in 18 months. Without any additional benefits to me. That and since PSD2 I can't check my account anymore via FinTS 3.0 api without providing a OTP for each single action.

And now really finally the state mafia and their corrupt regime, esp the EU that sits on top of it stealing our money and creating insider laws and regulations.

Oh yeah Google Adsense... don't get me started

dalu··on Why Italians don't drink a cappuccino after 11am [video]
I worked in an open bureau back in 2001. One guy would watch a funny video and the whole bureau would go to his computer to watch it. I found that very annoying, I'm here to work and solve (hard) problems, not watch videos. Because I was unemployed for a long time before that and was happy to work and do something productive. Instead..they watch videos. I also can't stand inner company politics. If I never have to talk to my colleagues it's the best. When I joined that company there was one guy who said, "we're all freaks here, what kind of freak are you". I never saw myself as a freak. The company imploded in the new economy bubble because management thought that spending 250k on Reamon (the singer) was a good investment. Then they didn't have enough money to pay their developers that were by 9/10 from Russia or Romania, imported. We sued and never saw our money. The product was sold to T-Online (Deutsche Telekom) as the TOM (T-Online Messenger) and the CEO fled to Switzerland with the money he made from the sale. We didn't see 1 cent. What's also interesting, on paper the chiefs like the CTO and the head recruiter earned 20fold of what the code monkeys earned. It was also a family business and they called themself a company that was noted on the stock exchange but in reality wasn't registered there. The brother of a, at that time prominent TV moderator was an investor in that company.
