dalrympm··on Import and Export Markdown in Google Docs
I don't see any mention of table support. That will be the first thing I try, I hope it works... if not now, eventually.
dalrympm··on LexisNexis is selling personal data to ICE so it can try to predict crimes
Thanks for this. Sadly, but not surprisingly, it is broken with the following error: "A system error has occurred and we are not able to process your request. Please try again later."
dalrympm··on Smartbolts
I've also noticed that the nuts go on top. I've always wondered if this was so it was completely obvious if a bolt dropped out (i.e. sunlight coming through the hole).
dalrympm··on Smartbolts
I would love to see these on chair lifts. I wonder if the indicators can remain valid with the types of temperature swings you see on a ski mountain.
dalrympm··on Report to Congress: Robocalls and Transmission of Misleading Caller ID
Can the FCC revoke the major mobile operators' spectrum licenses if they fail to verify Caller ID records? I know that won't help with land-lines and VoIP but I imagine it would take away the bulk of the incentive for the perpetrators.
dalrympm··on James Webb Space Telescope launch [video]
That was NASA administrator Bill Nelson trying to recreate the awe of the Apollo 8 Genesis reading. A bit out of touch...
dalrympm··on AWS us-east-1 outage
Contrary to what the status page says, CodePipeline is not working. Hitting the CLI I can start pipelines but they never complete and I get a lot of:

Connection was closed before we received a valid response from endpoint URL: "https://codepipeline.us-east-1.amazonaws.com/".

dalrympm··on Anthem Blue Cross breach notification [pdf]
I'm not surprised to find out they were breached I was trying to do a SEP around that time and finally gave up because their system was so broken. At least this explains the Apple ID reset requests I was getting in October!
dalrympm··on FAA approves hundreds more engines to use unleaded avgas
The Pilot Operating Handbook (POH) contains numerous tables that pilots use to calculate what will be safe operating conditions for an aircraft. These include how much runway will be required at specific temperatures/elevations to clear obstacles. Those numbers were based on a 100 octane fuel so if the fuel is changed, those values must be determined once again and I believe that is largely done with flight testing. To do that on the entire fleet would be prohibitive. Without these small planes the misery you experience flying commercial would increased greatly due to the lack of pilots. It's pretty bad as it is.
dalrympm··on CIA Implant: Green Lambert for OS X
I had the exact same reaction. Do we have a tl;dr equivalent for these things?

pu;dr ?

dalrympm··on Footnotes now supported in GitHub Markdown
Does anyone know of a good reference table showing what IS supported on GH vs. something like Goldmark (Hugo's default)?

I find that I constrain myself to the bare minimum in .md because I'm not sure what is supported.

dalrympm··on AWS launches ARM-powered Lambdas
Thanks for this! I was hoping it was going to be this easy for a SAM based Go app but didn't have it in me to wade through the AWS docs. This post is $.
dalrympm··on To H-E-Double-Hockey-Sticks with Facebook
>sweet-jeepers-boy-howdy it is a blood-curdling fart in the elevator of existence

If you just read the HN comments and not the article... this is a taste of what you're missing out on.

dalrympm··on Pragmatic Programmers Entire Catalog on Medium
I find Medium to be the worst way to consume content. Page loads are really slow (regardless of internet speed). Most content publishers don't have a custom domain so it's difficult to differentiate levels of quality in search results. The constant requests to be tracked (i.e. sign in) are frustrating. I used to cave to the nagging and sign in but after so many times finding out someone was gaming the search engine results to post a mediocre or pointless article, I've given up and never sign in.

My muscle memory when I'm searching now includes -site: medium.com and I've found that helps bubble up more well thought out and detailed solutions to technical issues I'm investigating.

I really enjoy PragProg books, they switched their eBook catalog backend in recent memory (last year?). I don't remember exactly what my issue was but I recall having an experience that ultimately had me abandon my shopping cart. I find the Manning catalog and eBook ownership experience to be top-notch, I'm not sure why PragProg has struggled with this. It's as if they don't read their own books.

dalrympm··on FAA Files Reveal a Surprising Threat to Airline Safety: US Military's GPS Tests
On the west coast it has pretty much become a standing Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) that some agency will potentially be interfering with GPS signals. Sadly they continue to decommission VOR stations across the country. https://bruceair.wordpress.com/tag/vor-decomissioning/
dalrympm··on Facebook deactivated account after it advocated decentralized social networks
Without more information about what policy was being violated, it smells like: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Post_hoc_ergo_propter_hoc
dalrympm··on Bitwarden releases “emergency access” feature
I'm really happy to see this come to BitWarden. I switched from LastPass to BitWarden and this Dead Man's switch was the only thing I found missing. I actually kept my LastPass active just to provide instructions on how to get into my BitWarden in case of an emergency. I'm still not clear if both the granter and grantee need to be premium/paid subscribers or not. Hopefully I can grant emergency access to someone without a paid subscription... I guess I'll find out when I dig into it over the weekend.
dalrympm··on Dropbox to cut 11% of its global workforce
I have been a Dropbox customer for several years and every single time I try to download a file from the web I get stumped.

It's really a user hostile interface and it's up there on my list of things to replace but not high enough that I've done anything about it.

dalrympm··on Ask HN: Dark mode for HN please? (2021)
I notice there's an API https://github.com/HackerNews/API but don't see any of the core site code. Is there any way people can contribute back?
dalrympm··on Atlassian Cloud ToS section 3.3(I) prohibits discussing performance issues
@confluence_perf The Cloud applications provide multiple avenues for providing feedback directly in the user interface. Some/many of them are quite invasive (as in part of the screen is taken over with a "rate your experience editing this document"). I have used these avenues to provide feedback many many times over the years with my #1 response always being "focus on the performance". None of those ever get a response and I don't see what reiterating them in a HN post is going to solve. You have the data, please do something with it.
dalrympm··on Atlassian Cloud ToS section 3.3(I) prohibits discussing performance issues
I'm a heavy JetBrains user but I've found their server side offerings to be lacking. I haven't been a fan of YouTrack in the past but maybe it's time to give them another try.
dalrympm··on Atlassian Cloud ToS section 3.3(I) prohibits discussing performance issues
I'm curious, I'm a Cloud customer and I can tell you that the service is incredibly slow even for a small scale setup (2 Jira Projects and 3 Confluence Workspaces). There's an insane amount of network requests seemingly for mouse tracking. By telling everyone here, that Atlassian Cloud products are insufferably slow, am I violating the ToS?

I was actually thinking about doing a write up on the issues I've had but this seems to make me think I should do so AFTER I find someplace else to go. Right now GitHub is the likely destination but would love to hear other suggestions.

dalrympm··on Architectures for Mitigating AWS Outages
Sadly there is no multi-region Cognito. Would love to hear if anyone has a strategy for that.
dalrympm··on S&P 500 CEO Pay by Pay Ratio
It would be great if there were a clear definition of what "pay" means. Sundar Pichai's pay includes his $240m stock package granted in 2019. That's a truckload of stock but is that to be considered pay? https://www.theverge.com/2019/12/20/21031629/google-ceo-sund...
dalrympm··on Google Brass Set 2023 as Deadline to Beat Amazon, Microsoft in Cloud
Having gone through a 6 week long process just to get a working replacement for my Pixel 3, I vowed not to use Google Cloud for fear of a similar opaque customer support experience. I can't fathom the amount of organizational change that would be required to make Google a customer focused organization nor how they could possibly communicate that change to all the people they've burned.
