dalmo3··on Instant 1.0, a backend for AI-coded apps
Congrats on the launch!

InstantDB is a joy to work with. Granted, I've only ever built small toy projects with it, but it's my go-to. Just so much simpler than anything else I've tried in this space.

The core product is so good that the AI emphasis feels weird. Hopefully that's just marketing and not a pivot. Unfortunate if that's what it takes to get funding these days.

dalmo3··on Session is shutting down in 90 days
I have that exact issue on a couple of not exactly low end Samsung phones. Holding them side by side with signal open. Delivery times vary wildly. Whereas WhatsApp just works (though I hate it for other reasons)
dalmo3··on Caveman: Why use many token when few token do trick
I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic or not, but I did find the caveman examples harder to read than their verbose counterpart.

The verbose ones I could speed read, and consume it at a familiar pace... Almost on autopilot.

Caveman speak no familiar no convention, me no know first time. Need think hard understand. Slower. Good thing?

dalmo3··on Show HN: I built a frontpage for personal blogs
TBH I'd love to see that idea as a /blogs list here at HN.
dalmo3··on Steam on Linux Use Skyrocketed Above 5% in March
> CachySteamOS

Where can I find more information on that? I use CachyOS but never heard of that. Googling didn't find a single result (surprisingly, not even your comment)

You can tell an intellectual came up with that definition.

Reminds me of this 4D minecraft clone:

dalmo3··on Pretext: TypeScript library for multiline text measurement and layout
This is awesome! I had this problem when building a datagrid where cells would dynamically render textarea. IIRC I ended up doing a simple canvas measurement, but I had all the text and font properties static, and even then it was hellish to get it right.
dalmo3··on The truth that haunts the Ramones: 'They sold more T-shirts than records'
Poor take. In the last three years alone they've played over 100 concerts. Their set is two hours. They're all in/approaching their 70s. If that's not a band, I'm a pterodactyl.
dalmo3··on Is anybody else bored of talking about AI?
I think GPs point is that you'll soon not even be able to make those choices.

Now every toilet on the market only flushes number one. But hey, they're so much cheaper.

dalmo3··on JavaScript Is Enough
> `child({ ...obj })` easily solves this, for example

Spreading doesn't prevent you from mutating nested fields. The fact that you think this is an easy problem puts all your other choices under question.

dalmo3··on Passengers who refuse to use headphones can now be kicked off United flights
PSA: get an etymotic in ear phones, play some quiet music, and forget you're flying. Those things become your eardrums.

dalmo3··on The pleasures of poor product design
That's how I read it too, and how I relate to it.

I have the exact same feeling as you towards coding AI for hobby projects. Though this sentiment isn't new, and AI is just a detail.

I'm not a musician, but I'm attracted to synthesizers and bought a couple in the past just for fun. I immediately get caught in a quicksand of DAWs and plugins and whatnot, which kill the fun for me (it's too similar to work), but at the same time I can't ignore the tools because now the synth is too "bland".

It's a weird kind of FOMO paralysis.

dalmo3··on Honda is killing its EVs
Because enshittification wouldn't happen in a centrally-planned economy? What's the basis of this?
dalmo3··on Stop Sloppypasta
> person insists they completely understood it before but just forgot after a few days.

I don't doubt this, to be honest.

I have the feeling of learning a lot when coding with agents. New features, patterns, entire languages... It's very satisfactory asking questions and getting answers in as much detail as you want, with examples, etc.

Except I forget it all soon after. Because I didn't put the effort. Easy come easy goes .

dalmo3··on The Appalling Stupidity of Spotify's AI DJ
GP was obviously talking about AI's abilities, not people's.

dalmo3··on Newcomb's Paradox Needs a Demon
This is the best reply in this thread, as it irrefutably demonstrates this so-called paradox is a religious question and has nothing to do with logic or probability.

The question is do you believe in an omniscient god or not.

The fact that they dress up god as a supercomputer and that attracts all sorts of math and tech nerds is hilarious.

All humans fail to be AGI, by definition.

dalmo3··on Ask HN: Anyone else feel this community has changed recently?
> they're in "transmit-only mode"

Being on HN for "only" about 6-7 years this is something I've always found quite bizarre, comparing to old forums.

Discussions here die after roughly 16 hours.

Because there's basically 4 entry points, front/new/past/ask, sorted by recent-ish, for millions of users, as opposed to themed sections and threads, everyone is incentivised to say what they want then move on. Comments are disposable.

If you're not here every day religiously, you're not part of the discussion. Even if you are, but live in a timezone too distant from the US, by the time you get to read the most popular threads they're already obsolete.

Hell, I don't even know if you, the person I'm replying to, will read this.

dalmo3··on Nobody gets promoted for simplicity
Long rant, but the author never defines what he means by "simple". He heavily hints at smaller changeset == simpler.

Too often the smallest changeset is, yes, simple, but totally unaware of the surrounding context, breaks expectations and conventions, causes race conditions, etc.

The good bit in tfa is near the end:

> when someone asks “shouldn’t we future-proof this?”, don’t just cave and go add layers. Try: “Here’s what it would take to add that later if we need it, and here’s what it costs us to add it now. I think we wait.” You’re not pushing back, but showing you’ve done your homework. You considered the complexity and chose not to take it on.

dalmo3··on British Columbia is permanently adopting daylight time

dalmo3··on What Claude Code chooses
There are more HTML tutorials than brainfuck tutorials. The reason is simple. Don't be obtuse.
dalmo3··on Modern CSS Code Snippets: Stop writing CSS like it's 2015
Ah, I only now opened your example code.

If you wrap the li contents in a div, you can handle them as a unit separately from ::before.

Then subgrid solves the problem of treating nested elements as siblings.

dalmo3··on Claude Sonnet 4.6
Exactly. The analogy is fatally flawed, as I explained in my original comment.
dalmo3··on Claude Sonnet 4.6
Weak appeal to fiction fallacy.

Also, trajectory of celestial bodies can be predicted with a somewhat decent level of accuracy. Pretending societal changes can be equally predicted is borderline bad faith.

dalmo3··on Modern CSS Code Snippets: Stop writing CSS like it's 2015
Try ::before and css-counters.
