dajomu··on Ask HN: Should I quit my job?
I don't think I have properly considered it. Maybe I've just had a bit of baby brain for the last year or so and I haven't completely kept up with things.

Are there any good resources that you can share for those remote positions?

dajomu··on EMule 0.60a
As a counterpoint I have come across lots of software that is only developed for one platform and unfortunately I haven't been able to use it. Sometimes the difference between a 3mb or 300mb install file is worth it if it means that the software is available to more users. In that sense it can be in the user's interest.

I really liked the message of this, I often feel like some kind of requirement or expectation is preventing me from being creative

I really want to think of something to use this for now, it's really good!
dajomu··on Nintendo’s Philosophy: Lateral Thinking with Withered Technology (2015)
Some Indie games are just great on it too. I played through Hollow Knight, Blasphemous and Dead Cells far more than I would have done if I got them on PC or PS4. They were fairly cheap too.
dajomu··on How to manage HTML DOM with vanilla JavaScript only?
This could be read the other way too. In my experience there is a spectrum from reckless to needlessly perfectionist, neither of which approaches are very helpful. Being focused on delivery is not necessarily a bad thing. But then I've mostly worked in small startups, so perhaps it's different elsewhere.
dajomu··on Boris Johnson uses search terms in interviews to hide negative articles?
Isn't it much the same thing as Trump saying something racist that he can kind of get away with? Johnson can say it, incite some anger in people who won't vote for him anyway, get his name on the news again and appeal to his base. Many of his supporters are the kinds of people that want to "Make Britain Great Again". There isn't a vast constituency in Britain who love the poem, but there is a vast constituency who are mildly racist and look back to the "good old days".

If you have the latest npm installed you can clone it and run `npx serve`.
dajomu··on Sadly, I must say goodbye to Leaf, my programming language
This sounds really interesting, can you provide a link so I can read some more about it?
dajomu··on Paul Graham on SICP (2000)
Thanks, good to know how much time I need to apportion.

I'm trying to find a way that I can fit it around work/family schedules and not let my concentration go too stale. I'm thinking of trying for an hour a day, but that feels so prescriptive...

dajomu··on Paul Graham on SICP (2000)
I have a copy of SICP sitting on my shelf right now. I've really wanted to get started on it, but I must say that it seems like the kind of book that would take hundreds of hours to get through (with all the exercises, etc). Is that true?

Roughly how long have people taken to get through it?

dajomu··on The Evolutionary Argument Against Reality (2016)
It seems that he chose it exactly for that reason though. The desktop is an abstraction built upon successive abstractions to hide reality from us so that we can do what we need to do. Computers have 'evolved' to what they are today to essentially improve their fitness to their environment, even if that means that it is impossible for any one person to fully understand how they work.

In this case it kind of supports his idea that evolution would lead to a similar kind of model of reality in our heads. But the most interesting thing seemed to be the fact that if you remove objective reality from his models you can just build on successive layers of abstraction and the model still works. I know this metaphor doesn't hold up in all cases, but it seems like it's a pretty good introduction to this idea.

dajomu··on “It is never a compiler error”
Although with javascript there have been a lot of different interpreters with a lot of different bugs over the years. I'm thinking mainly of browsers and their implementation bugs, there have been quite a few instances in which what I thought was my own mistake turned out to be a browser bug of some kind.

dajomu··on Oculus founder Palmer Luckey is developing border surveillance technology
The issue isn't necessarily that he supports Trump, it's that he donated money to a group that knowingly shitposts, which if anything is an attack on free speech. A quote from that group: "shitposting is powerful and meme magic is real". The founders of the same group spread white supremacist and anti-semitic memes.

Surely the problem with funding a group like that is that they are actively employing measures to reduce free speech or a balanced political discussion? In that context it's not someone who is using their free speech, but employing others to suppress it. That's the problem I have with Luckey's actions (and yes, a whole lot of other people's too).

dajomu··on So You Want to Be a Compiler Wizard
He's suggesting that for a lot of people getting involved in open source it is a means to an end. Whether that is getting a job in a new field, increasing exposure or experience, etc... Usually that end is something monetary or status related. What he is then saying is that some parts of the population are more privileged than others when it comes to the free time and resources needed to achieve that. It's not necessarily just that they have the resources now, but that they may have had them in the past too (upbringing, access to education, encouragement, etc).

So the discussion of privilege shouldn't necessarily be seen as a negative force trying to tear down white men, but should inform our decision making when we take other people's hardships into account. As a white male myself I understand that I have had better opportunities than a large part of the population. I'd rather take that into account and try to improve the fairness in society, than to look away from it. What to actually do about it is another matter... But acknowledging that it's a problem is the first step.

dajomu··on Ask HN: How/where should I host my personal site?
That's bloody tempting, can I do that through Heroku?
dajomu··on Ask HN: How/where should I host my personal site?
Wow, thank you! Someone that I know has recommended Jekyl, but I didn't really get why it was so great. I'll have a second look at it though. I'll have to really think about what I want to use. I develop full stack at the moment (well, from configuring servers/backend development all the way to css/js/html) so I'm looking for something that might develop my range of skills. I'll check out barley and get back to you about that (when it isnt 2:30am). Thanks again for the offer!
dajomu··on Ask HN: How/where should I host my personal site?
Thanks, this was exactly what I was thinking about. I took the plunge just now and registered dajomu.com for a couple of years. Now I have to build something!
dajomu··on Ask HN: How/where should I host my personal site?
I just signed up for a Heroku free account, so I may well give this a go.... I'd like to do some experimentation. I want to pick the most fun/difficult way to do this if I can.
dajomu··on Ask HN: How/where should I host my personal site?
I was halfway through buying from namecheap, when I kind of felt odd about giving all of my details over to an American company. I know it's probably pretty biased of me, but after everything that's happened recently I thought I might have some tiny smidgen of legal protection if I went with a British company. I'm not an American citizen, so I don't feel like I would have any rights if there ever was a problem with my domain. It's not that I think I'm going to do anything that would warrant shutting down my domain name, but it's one of those things that just makes you think twice. p.s. I'm well aware how terrible my own country's surveillance methods are, but at least I'm considered to be a citizen here.
