daishi424··on Hang on to Your Firefox
This is what bugs me every time I have to use Chrome. I know why Chrome does it, it has every incentive to put people through search at every opportunity. There is no way to put results from the history on top.

But you can do that in Firefox.

daishi424··on JetZero
So, essentially that's how it works in the game Elite: Dangerous where you load and unload the passengers in cabins which are measured in tons. They can even be stolen mid-flight by anyone with a hatch breaker drone. Unfortunately, you cannot jettison them in the void of space.

Then there are the Imperial slaves which are considered cargo and not passengers, but it's a different story...

I couldn't resist reading this in Patrick Bateman's voice!

daishi424··on The origin and unexpected evolution of the word "mainframe"
"I come from the Net - through systems, peoples, and cities - to this place: MAINFRAME."

The word is forever etched in my mind together with this quote.

daishi424··on Planescape: Torment pitch document (1997) [pdf]
XCOM (2012) is super convenient with a gamepad, I finished both new games (with Long War mod on top) with a 360 controller.

Give it a try, its control scheme is designed very well.

daishi424··on Slovio, an international simplified Slavic language
There was a neighbor to the east about a thousand years ago. Ever since, there are a lot of Tatar and Mongolian words in Russian.
daishi424··on Movies every physics lover should watch (2020)
Wormhole devices in movies keep puzzling me for quite some time - why does a significant number of them look like rings rotating around each other? Contact is one example, another is Event Horizon. The Terminator also had a similar looking time machine.
daishi424··on Movies every physics lover should watch (2020)
Ah, yes, the infamous Rip Van Winkle effect.

I consider time dilation to be an inherently literary format, and Forever War is where the idea is turned up to eleven. There's also a short comic adaptation if you like.

daishi424··on Study finds using Night Shift doesn’t improve sleep
> A sample of 167 emerging adults (ages 18-24; 71.3% female) with iPhones participated in the study.

BYU University is a Mormon university. I assume students there have a rather healthy sleep routine in general.

daishi424··on USB 3.0* Radio Frequency Interference on 2.4 GHz Devices (2012)
Are you using Type-C to Type-C cable with an Android phone? Yeah well, finding a USB2.0 cable with both Type-C ports might present a challenge.
daishi424··on Ask HN: What are the best websites that the Anglosphere doesn't know about?
Looks like they've been running A/B tests recently - reviews are hidden on some products. Or maybe they hide reviews for anonymous user. I hope it won't go further than that.
