daft_pink··on OpenAI mulls slashing prices as it competes with Anthropic for users
OpenAI seems like such a better product these days. I was someone who jumped to anthropic early on for claude code, but I find myself jumping in the other direction these days.

I completely don’t understand Anthropic’s pricing where you have to pay a monthly fee to access their crappy models and pay per use for access to their top model. If you’re going to go pay per use it should be actually pay per use.

daft_pink··on The U.S. Is Terrorizing Cuba to Make Rich Men Richer
The person who wrote this never asked a Cuban immigrant how they felt about the government in Cuba. Many will tell you a story about how their family desperately escaped on a row boat, are lucky to be alive and blame Castro.

The bottom line is that many Cuban immigrants in the United States feel that the current government destroyed the country and should be removed and Marco Rubio’s quest to fix Cuba is a reflection of Cuban immigrants values.

daft_pink··on AWS Bedrock to require sharing data with Anthropic for Mythos and future models
I was under the impression that a SOC 2 Type 2 audit requires the auditor to verify access, so if you are purchasing a paid/business version from a top 3 vendor (Anthropic, Google, OpenAI) it is SOC 2 Type 2 and any SOC 2 Type 2 service has to maintain access logs and have an independent auditor validate that data isn't being accessed or used against the rules?

Essentially, this is why AWS is reporting this to begin with.

daft_pink··on Starlink shifts hardware from one-time purchase to $10/month rental
I think it makes sense as their expensive hardware makes me much less likely to order their services.
daft_pink··on The iPhone's Last Stand?
Something that I thought when reading this was that I'm not willing to buy groceries remotely, because when I had covid during the pandemic I had grocery delivery and I ended up with milk that expired in a few days and produce that was very subpar neither or which I would have bought in person.

I would actually be willing to use AI to purchase groceries if it could provide me with some assurance that it would choose the items better than a shopping cart.

As for now, I'm only willing to purchase non-perishable goods that are difficult to screw up online.

Might be a service idea for AI.

daft_pink··on Claude Fable 5
I’m just about ready to cancel my small business 5 user plan with max licenses, because although cowork is really great. I just find OpenAI/Codex to be a lot better most of the time.
daft_pink··on The iPhone's Last Stand?
It kind of reminds me of Windows mobile and blackberry and palm os where apple was clearly behind but they eventually caught up. The first iPhone didn’t even have apps!

I think agents are scary and complicated and dangerous enough that it is genuinely scary to give an agent an instruction like go buy this ticket. It’s okay and apple can easily simplify and eventually win. The mainstream hasn’t really started using agents yet and no one has come close to delivering a platform that will get them there.

daft_pink··on Andrew Tate's Empire of Abuse
He’s just some idiot who started a self help/motivational educational website called Hustler’s University which had a “PhD program” that controversially explained how to pimp and make money off of girls by having them perform adult content and making tons of $’s while the man collected the revenue. Then proceeded to get accused by different women of rape and human trafficking and has had a long running legal battles and police investigations about it in different countries around the globe.
daft_pink··on DoD Officially Drops 180 Faiths from Military's Recognized Religion List
I guess my question is does it make sense for the US government to spend money providing church services for people who just want mental health benefits, and a break? I think believing a religion is very different from creating a religion so that you can maximize government benefits.
daft_pink··on Nvidia is proposing a beast of a CPU system for Windows PCs
Sounds good, but how much does it cost? Is this going to be an affordable laptop or $6000.
daft_pink··on OpenAI frontier models and Codex are now available on AWS
And the giant ai circle continues
daft_pink··on Microsoft Office 2019 and 2021 for Mac view-only conversion
I also don’t love how if you have a microsoft account, it will immediatley convert your perpetually licensed products into office 365 products and force you to reinstall.
daft_pink··on Danish Pension Blacklists SpaceX over 'Catastrophic Governance'
Apparently, the index funds are based on free float and since the number of free floating shares is limited, the total exposure to the index will be very small.
daft_pink··on Danish Pension Blacklists SpaceX over 'Catastrophic Governance'
LEAPS are very expensive.
daft_pink··on The dead economy theory
I think when these companies IPO later this year, we’re going to see the reality of the PNL numbers and whether they are sustainable etc as all the financials will become public.

Rumor mill suggests that Anthropic might be profitable (but at what magnitude), OpenAI is not profitable, Google is mostly vertically integrated and has a low cost structure as they are have pre-existing data center buildouts, their own silicon and experience that suggests they will be able to operate at a very low cost, but they still have to justify their spend.

I think having to report numbers publically on a quarterly basis will bring the whole thing into reality.

daft_pink··on How long until AI automates all cognitive labor?
Any chance there is a prediction market for this that we can use, since research has shown they tend to be more accurate than experts?
daft_pink··on Why the smart home bubble popped
Personally, I find the biggest problem is the lack of a neutral wire in most older homes. It forces me to use hue bulbs plus a Lutron aurora in the 80 percent of locations where that actually works but I have to find a really expensive electrician for every other location.

Plus most people who use hue aren’t even aware of the Lutron aurora.

daft_pink··on Motorola phones have started hijacking the Amazon app to insert affiliate codes
Why would Amazon pay out on scam affiliate links? That’s the thing I don’t really understand from the honey scam.
daft_pink··on Nobody cracks open a programming book anymore
I do feel that programming is more accessible than ever though.
daft_pink··on Search engines alternatives now that Google isn't Google anymore
Just not very practical on iOS or iPad
daft_pink··on If you let AI do your writing, I will come to your house and kill you
The problem is that you are good at writing and I’m not good at writing.
daft_pink··on Search engines alternatives now that Google isn't Google anymore
I know right. It’s simple. Google pays them over a billion dollars and Kagi doesn’t.
daft_pink··on Search engines alternatives now that Google isn't Google anymore
I’ve tried them all and found that Kagi is the only one that my subconscious feels is equal to or better than google.
daft_pink··on FreeBSD Foundation executive director tries daily driving FreeBSD on laptop
Can Linux get the Mac level of close the shell and the battery doesn’t deplete on a laptop if you order a framework?
daft_pink··on Childhood Computing
I too started using computers at a young age and loved them and even got my own Nintendo when I was young. I feel very conflicted about the current anti screen fad. My son is very young and my wife doesn’t want him to use screens at all.

I don’t want him to use tik tok or facebook but maybe I will buy an apple 2 or setup a rpi emulator and play little old school games that weren’t available online.

daft_pink··on Green card seekers must leave U.S. to apply, Trump administration says
Do tourists stay in the country for a year?
daft_pink··on USCIS Will Grant 'Adjustment of Status' Only in Extraordinary Circumstances
No. Before you could enter on a tourist visa and there was an automatic presumption of fraud if you got married, etc within the first 90 days, but you could get married after 90 days, but before 6 months of maximum tourist stay and they may investigate a little bit, but it was generally not difficult.

The IR-1/CR-1 that you describe is how a spouse would apply from outside the country.

daft_pink··on Green card seekers must leave U.S. to apply, Trump administration says
I think if you enter on a B1/B2 tourist visa, you should not be allowed to adjust status to a green card except in extraordinary circumstances. I’m not so sure about other non-immigrant visas.

K1 will obviously be an exception as substantial steps are generally taken at a home consulate.

daft_pink··on Green card seekers must leave U.S. to apply, Trump administration says
I think in specific visa circumstances, an i485 will still be required such as K1 visa which is granted outside the country and then by nature of a K1 visa, adjustment to green card must happen within the United States.
daft_pink··on Flipper One – we need your help
I hope they let you disable the 6ghz wifi easily as Wifi 6E without the band steering of wifi 7 just gives you low range 6ghz which is a waste on a device that probably doesn’t need a high speed connection.

Love my flipper zero!
