dadzilla··on Structured Procrastination (1995)
Heh, that's my daughter - mostly self-taught with just enough misdirection from me to keep her guessing. The essay was from 1995, but was just in a listserv. The webpage was done in the early 2000s.

My dad, John Perry, wrote this essay and followed it up with a book - The Art of Procrastination. I love to see the essay rediscovered & will share this thread with him.
dadzilla··on How much is one terabyte of data?
From Groq using Llama 2 70b: To calculate the volume of space required to contain the world's population, we need to first convert the area calculated earlier to square feet.

Area (square feet) = 600 square miles × 5,280 square feet/square mile = 3,160,000,000 square feet

Next, we need to assume a height at which the population can comfortably stand. Let's assume an average height of 5 feet.

Volume = Area (square feet) × Height (feet) Volume = 3,160,000,000 square feet × 5 feet Volume = 15,800,000,000 cubic feet

Now, we need to convert the volume from cubic feet to cubic miles. There are 1,476,333,333 cubic feet in a cubic mile, so:

Volume (cubic miles) = Volume (cubic feet) ÷ 1,476,333,333 Volume (cubic miles) = 15,800,000,000 ÷ 1,476,333,333 Volume (cubic miles) = 10.7 cubic miles

Therefore, to contain the entire world population, we would need a volume of approximately 10.7 cubic miles, assuming an average height of 5 feet and a density similar to that of a solid object.

Please note that this calculation is purely theoretical and doesn't take into account factors like personal space, comfort, and actual population density.

If it is a USB iPad, you can plug it into an external display. USB-C to USB-C monitor, or get a USB-C to HDMI or DVI adapter. You can also use a USB or Bluetooth mouse if the digitizer is broken.

Volume is more like a tenth of that, I think? Maybe interior dimensions 2 meters diameter and 5 meters length gives around 16 cubic meters if my math is sane (Religion major, so go easy on me if not).

I love these stations. SomaFM carries this and others (or maybe they are just similar mash-ups). I have tinnitus 100% of the time, and silence is the enemy. This kind of sound - indistinct, with variety and high frequencies, is the most helpful.

Faster way to disable FaceTime is to hold power and volume-up for a few seconds to bring up the power-down interface. You don't need to power down or do anything - once that interface loads, the iPhone will disable FaceTime login.

Which is on purpose. We are a representative republic based on democratic principles, explicitly structured to avoid the “mob rule” tendencies of direct democracies. Which doesn’t make the Electoral College any more sensible, but here we are ¯\_(?)_/¯.

dadzilla··on Is the SSD worth the extra $$ on a new MacBook Pro?
Oh yes. What I did is put a 128gb in my 13" MBP (current generation) and then get a kit to replace the DVD drive with a 2.5" laptop drive. Everything runs very fast, time machine backs up my boot drive every 20 minutes transparently, and I have plenty of spinning disk storage too.
