dade_··on Three chips in and Google Tensor is on life support
The image Google has created in the market of their products is, stellar success or death. The article states and provides examples where the chips are completely missing the mark (that Apple is setting) and that the chips aren’t a stellar success, so life support is probably a group of people trying to keep the project alive.
dade_··on Margaret Mead, technocracy, and the origins of AI's ideological divide
I find it interesting that the real problem we have in our world is technocrats (original definition: skill with power), yet we keep worrying about the made up redefinition of the term, rule made effective through technology (skill with knowledge). The people that are experts with power are far more dangerous, especially as we arm them with more and more technology.

Wikipedia ‘The term technocracy is derived from the Greek words τέχνη, tekhne meaning skill and κράτος, kratos meaning power, as in governance, or rule. William Henry Smyth, a California engineer, is usually credited with inventing the word technocracy in 1919 to describe "the rule of the people made effective through the agency of their servants, the scientists and engineers", although the word had been used before on several occasions.’

Exports. Argentina should be a wealthy country, but it’s been squandered by corrupt politicians.

Except compared the Argentinian peso for the last 40 years and that the population uses electronics such as televisions as currency / savings as it is.

dade_··on Google News is shutting down purchased magazine content, offering refunds
Something happened. There are a lot of consolidations in the industry, and as content contracts expire and get renegotiated this happens. On September 21:

We regret to inform you that the magazine(s) you received through ZINIO will no longer be available. Please find below a voucher with a value equal to the remaining balance of issues for your subscription(s) to use in a special selection we have created for you based on your interests.

This was in regard to The Economist, which is now available on Pressreader and happens to be free from my Library. So for me cost wise, this is awesome.

dade_··on [dead]
Picture it, a small conservative city in the year 2000. A black man dressed in drag with a Christmas tree headpiece made with green garland. Photos were taken for the front cover of gay newspaper.

Photos came back from the photo lab. Definitely no AI involved. White woman with blonde hair. Truly a work of art but not appreciated.

This article has nothing to do with AI, but thanks for the Clickbait.

dade_··on Bayer hit with $332M judgement in Roundup cancer trial
our understanding of DNA is pretty basic. I’d say we’re using a hatchet to do surgery.

Did she make any reference to studies?

dade_··on Bayer hit with $332M judgement in Roundup cancer trial
I don’t have a fear of chemicals. Everything is a chemical, but I’ve met the people you are describing, I promise to never use the work again.

Keep in mind these studies are from 1997, the world wasn’t even ruined by the Internet at that point. The studies about humans described in your link are: some idiot drank half a cup of it, and he didn’t die, and the rabbits and mice seem ok. It’s safe! I just struggle, because even at that time these types of anecdotal statements were so dubious. It’s now over 25 years later, so what are the long-term effect?

As a point of comparison, Johnson and Johnson continues to insist that their asbestos laced baby powder doesn’t cause cancer (contradicting reality), so Monsanto now Bayer assurances don’t generate much confidence for me.

dade_··on Bayer hit with $332M judgement in Roundup cancer trial
Chemophobia - it annoys me that people think that the only harm we must consider for herbicides and pesticides is humans, then proceeded to dump billions of gallons of this, which ultimately end up down rivers, lakes, and oceans. there are countless creatures being affected by the chemicals, but somehow we skip that study.

You brought up chocolate. Hersheys arguably is chocolate and the Consumer Reports study is actually about dark chocolate, and all the amazing chemicals in it.

dade_··on Louis Armstrong's Last Word
But for me, it is Louis Armstrong and Nina Simone that titillate. Music that resonates with the spine. No disrespect for Nat King Cole.
dade_··on Telnet BBS Guide
The Internet ruined everything. If I have any regrets in my life, it was not fully appreciating the magic that was the 1990s in the moments I experienced them.
dade_··on Bayer hit with $332M judgement in Roundup cancer trial
The most dangerous surface in a farm is the farmer’s hat I was told.

So they wear the hat in the sun, tilling the fields, but the reason the hat is dangerous is from spraying the fields. Pesticides and herbicides are downright scary chemicals, and we genetically modify crops to improve tolerance of these chemicals.

And that is when I went all GMO free, not because I am worried about eating grain that has modified genes, that’s plain stupid. Nature does that all day.

But when chemicals so awful they kill the crop, the crop’s genes need to be modified so that they don’t die and that chemical residue ends up all over our food system, well buddy, get me off this stupid crazy train.

I hope the settlement hits trillions. Burn the fuckers down.

dade_··on On Keeping a Logbook (2010)
It’s essential, though the Bullet Journal spells out nice, thoughtful, and adaptable techniques. https://bulletjournal.com/pages/book The reviews have caught hundreds of important ideas and tasks that had slipped my mind.
dade_··on I, Voyager: Open-Source Software Planetarium
Great project. I loved the idea of Visible Solar System on the Commodore VIC-20, but the execution was a bit limited by the technology 40 years ago to say the least. https://www.vic-20.it/visible-solar-sistem-1930/
dade_··on Canada has fewer entrepreneurs today than it did 20 years ago
These explanations are all very interesting, but the reality is that any good business person must decide when to invest. The conditions have been far from favourable for years in Canada. Real estate is simply too expensive. Sure commercial real estate for the plant or office or whatever facility you need is outrageously expensive, but then, when you wanted to hire somebody or try, they need to pay rent or a mortgage. People aren’t demanding outrageous wages because they suddenly think they’re worth it. They just know how expensive it is to pay the bills and groceries.

Government policy, both the conservatives and the liberals, are very cosy to large corporations. Most of their announcements, that supposedly help small businesses are simply far out of reach due to requirements for revenue or number of employees, and is essentially corporate welfare. The BDC and EDC are a joke, both crown corporations run by people very disconnected from any sort of reality.

Of course it was driven by interest rates, but the insidious thing about interest rate is it allows zombie corporations. These organizations that should’ve gone out of business being acquired or shut down, but because of their size and revenue were able to continue to borrow more and more and more money at extremely low interest rates. of course it’s coming to an end now as financial reality hits. Many of these companies are forced to cut, but they were actually hopelessly dysfunctional so over time though finally either just be bought or go to business.

all of this to say, the last 20 years has been a terrible time to start a business in Canada but a lot of markers are indicating things could be getting better soon. While it may be good for somebody starting a business isn’t good for necessarily the average person.

anyway, the thing I find absolutely laughable is that we need more education for entrepreneurs. The funniest thing I’ve read all year. there is no education that will make someone an entrepreneur, but someone may learn enough to be scarred out of taking the plunge.

finally, the idea that there’s a single definition of Canadians is completely stupid and misinformed. culture varies dramatically from coast to coast and from the south to the north. if someone thinks that nobody wants to work, or nobody wants to make money, it speaks about the people that they associate with not the country they live in. I think that is true most anywhere.

dade_··on Apple declares its $17,000 solid-gold watch officially obsolete
I’ll stick with a company that actually supports its wearables for the long haul and doesn’t lock me into a phone or create obsolescence of perfectly good hardware. I believe Samsung is even worse than Apple. https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2015/03/garmin-fenix3-detailed-r...

Fenix 3, still going strong, and has a program for refurbishment.

dade_··on Unlimited Kagi searches for $10 per month
Windows has never respected users. Not in version 3.0, and not today in 11. Millennium Edition and Vista were particularly egregious, and 11 took it to a brave new world.

There is no such thing as a single Linux experience, each distribution targets different personas and goals.

If you want a curated Linux desktop experience, then try Elementary OS. It is very aligned to a Mac experience.

dade_··on iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus
I haven’t owned an an iPhone or iPad since they dropped the 30 pin connector and headset jack to proprietary lightning instead of USB-C. I bought my first iPad once Apple finally adopted USB-C and I look forward to switching back to iPhone one the iPhone SE has USB-C. I refuse to give any company money when they are being egregious. It was a pure profit play, and I’m not interested in wasting my money on high margin, proprietary, lightning accessories that I knew would be sent to the landfill in due time. Apple held out a lot longer than I thought they would. It’s shameful really.

Nothing attracts downvotes like criticism of Apple. Their decisions are guided by the hand of the divine, so anyone that won’t follow is clearly an unworthy heathen.

dade_··on Memories from old LAN parties
also, we didn’t get bored of it. we figured out how to make custom maps. yes including our school, and picked appropriate demon for each classroom to represent our fabulous teachers. Columbine hadn’t happened yet. even if someone found out, you weren’t gonna go to jail.

Things went downhill fast after that.

dade_··on Memories from old LAN parties
It was a 90s and we met through our BBS systems. there was no debate what to play, doom. Warcraft came soon after. The Internet sounded cool, too bad actually kind of destroyed everything. some of us had pagers. we made plans, over land lines, and everyone actually showed up.

we didn’t take photos because that would be stupid. our parents would find out what we were doing. which was mostly drinking and smoking way too much and playing video games until the sun rose.

dade_··on Goodreads is terrible for books – why can’t we all quit it?
same reason people don’t quit LinkedIn. It’s a self updated list of books, just like LinkedIn is a self updating Rolodex of people.

They are very reliable for these core functions, and quite unreliable for any other. when someone figures out how to disrupt them, Microsoft/Amazon will crush them or buy them.

This is why we have regulations against monopolies, but there are far bigger fish to fry these days.

dade_··on Managed to death: How Canada turned its forests into a carbon bomb
Clickbait because it targets people that are upset about the air quality this summer and the apocalyptic skies which were caused by fires in northern Quebec and Ontario. They had nothing to do with forest management practises in BC, it the article inaccurately conflates different issues into a forestry management problem in Canada.

They do have an axe to grind, but it has nothing to do with carbon. The National Observer is very sympathetic to aboriginal communities, and BC forestry industry’s relationship with them could be described as antagonistic and definitely problematic.

To me, this is one of those make shit up on the left to combat shit that’s made up on the right, but in the end, it is all just a bunch of lies supported by small grains of truth.

dade_··on Social media decline: Users are shifting to messaging apps and group chats
Too crowded with robots designed to piss me off.

The bots are like tourists. The population of Venice is in steep decline, but the streets are congested.

dade_··on Managed to death: How Canada turned its forests into a carbon bomb
Poor quality article. I’d never use the National Observer as a source as they are very biased. The National Observer are a group of well meaning social justice eco warriors that will gladly ignore any facts that don’t support their narrative, because they know they are correct. They do bring attention to otherwise ignored issues.

However, the worst of the forest fires this year were in pristine untouched forests in areas experiencing extreme weather as predicted by scientists. Many were basically impossible to fight.

‘Canada is the second-largest country in the world, and almost half of that is forest," Barber said. "A lot of that forest is remote, untouched wilderness, and it's very difficult to manage wildfire in those areas where there is no road access or any of the infrastructure needed to support firefighting activity."’

dade_··on Managed to death: How Canada turned its forests into a carbon bomb
True, but such facts don’t fit the narrative.

Fortunately, NPR is more interested in the facts than clickbait headlines:

dade_··on I Am Leaving
Yes, I remember when LinkedIn was tricking people into spamming everyone in their contact list on their phone and using the information to suggest connections. A coworker was fooled and sent out invitations to everyone in his massive contact list. He was in sales for over 40 years and was mortified, then pissed off.

I refuse to install the LinkedIn apps on my devices. Microsoft didn’t help matters when they integrated it into Outlook.

dade_··on I Am Leaving
LinkedIn at least managed to retain its only useful function, a self-updating Rolodex. It would be nice to be able to disable the virtue signalling feed though.
