dabfiend19··on MariaDB to go public at $672M valuation
distrust of Oracle is Mongo's main source of income. and it's a ~$25B company now.
dabfiend19··on DynamoDB 10 years later
knocking off mongo... 10 years later they still haven't caught up.
dabfiend19··on Microsoft buys Xandr, AT&T’s advanced advertising business
As someone who worked for appnexus/xandr for years, this move makes sense. MSFT was already xandr's largest customer, and handled most of their MSN and Xbox supply. I'm happy for Everyone still there. this is a much better home than AT&T.
dabfiend19··on Microsoft buys Xandr, AT&T’s advanced advertising business
MSFT was already xandr's biggest customer. they ran dedicated hardware just for MSFT, and already handled most of their ads for msn and Xbox. they were already deeply linked companies.
dabfiend19··on Ask HN: Has remote work made you move to a new location or consider it?
live in Williamsburg, not Manhattan. everyone moves to Manhattan for a few years, realizes it's not worth it, and moves to Williamsburg. Skip the first phase.
dabfiend19··on Antikythera Mechanism: An ancient 'computer' that 'shouldn't exist' [video]
the cathedral in Barcelona was the first time thing I toured where I really thought about multi-generational projects.
dabfiend19··on The communications systems at the US Central Command headquarters
from I've been told this is fake and totally staged.
dabfiend19··on Traces of 122 different pesticides in 12 most polluted fruit and veg products
do you have any evidence of this? from my personal experience pests are an even bigger problem for growing plants indoors.

lack of predatory parts of the food chain allow some pests to go unchecked.

just one spider mite in a greenhouse... could quickly overtake the whole thing with out natural predators like lady bugs and predatory mites.

dabfiend19··on Life-size camel sculptures in Saudi Arabia are older than Stonehenge, pyramids
there's always graham Hancock. he has a couple books and has done some podcasts. the JRE podcast with graham and Randall Carlson always gets my imagination going on ancient societies...
dabfiend19··on On YouTube’s recommendation system

dabfiend19··on If software engineering is in demand, why is it so hard to get a job?
pretty much any public company with salary plus rsus
dabfiend19··on Warmth from the earth and air: could heat pumps replace our gas boilers?
technically, electric heaters are nearly 100% efficient at turning the electric energy to heat energy.
dabfiend19··on Thoughts of work invaded my life until I learned how to unplug
huge bong rip at 7pm everyday really works wonders for me. while it can increase the anxiety for some, and even me sometimes, it's always causes a "head change" where I'm like "why am I just staring at my screen right now?"
dabfiend19··on GoKart: A static analysis tool for securing Go code
as opposed to?
dabfiend19··on You don’t need to work on hard problems (2020)
why does a person's interest in the application of their work serve as a signal for if you should hire them? I mean maybe for someone in a product role, but how is it relevant to hiring an individual contributor?

not hiring someone just because of their internal philosophies feels like gate keeping to me.

if someone is a cynic and realizes most start ups arent out there "making the world a better place"... doesn't really have any bearing on their potential output.

dabfiend19··on How do vaccinated people spread Delta? What the science says
sure we did. that ~90% number came before the south African variant, and many others. that's arguably why the j&j had a much lower rate than Pfizer, as it was tested amongst test pools with different variants circulating.
dabfiend19··on MongoDB Wire Protocol Specification License
what does this have to do with the linked article?
dabfiend19··on DoorDash removing 1-year cliff for equity grants
I work at a smaller company, and here we convert the $ price to a number of shares by taking the 100 day VWAP of the stock from the date of the board meeting where your grant is approved.
dabfiend19··on DoorDash removing 1-year cliff for equity grants
all of my friends at google say the grant is in dollars and stays in dollars at google. at the end of the quarter you get a variable number of shares based on current stock price. While this reduces upside, it also reduces downside.
dabfiend19··on Stockfish 14
what do you use?
dabfiend19··on Mexico's Supreme Court has decriminalised the private use of cannabis by adults
if the taxes are too high, the market will fail and the majority of people will still use the black market. they'll get a lower tax yield and less safety for users.
dabfiend19··on Mexico's Supreme Court has decriminalised the private use of cannabis by adults
I'm in favor of people smoking pot anywhere you can smoke cigs. most parks have no-smoking laws.
dabfiend19··on Bring back menus, QR codes are terrible
ordering and paying through the QR code is now pretty common place in NYC. fewer waiters can attend more tables.
dabfiend19··on Bring back menus, QR codes are terrible
every restaurant and bar I've been to in Brooklyn in the last week now also has the menu, ordering, and payment entirely through the QR codes. most using the Toast platform. I don't see this trend going back the other way.
